I don't think Overcome was the right début album for Alex but it definitely wasn't rushed.
I don't like the fact the album wasn't cohesive. It just sounded like a mix of lots of different styles, tempos and genres. You had the electro-pop ('Bad Boys, 'Dumb'), the mid-tempo R&B (GNGM), the heavily produced ballads (TS, 'Overcome'), the stripped ballad (TDN), the Pop/R&B crossover (ANL)... don't get me wrong, as far as XF alumni albums go it's among the best but in the grand scheme of things I just think her team threw every kind of style at it in order to make every fan have at least one song they'd like and maybe because they lacked any kind of direction. If I was her A&R man back then, I'd have her make an album like Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad - a cool, edgy Pop/R&B album that is filled with potential singles and no cheesy lyrics/melodies.
I know many on here believe Alex's career started dying around the HOH era (technically that is correct) but for me it died the minute she won. I remember back in 2008, Simon said he's only going to sign the winner because otherwise there is no point in winning (he clearly later went back on this for the other series). If Alex hadn't won, I'm sure she'd have been snapped up by Epic (since JLS would've won instead). Syco literally didn't know what to do with Alex even though she should've been one of the easiest artists to market. She was marketed as a black Lady GaGa to begin with (RedOne, ANL video) since GaGa was the biggest pop star at the time. WRONG DECISION. She should've been marketed as the British Beyonce/Rihanna. Even a 10 year old could've figured that out.
