Any luck?

With me it's been

Regent street Apple store was out of stock of all 5S's this afternoon.

Phones4u refused to sell for a week unless it was on contract.

O2 shop out of stock.

So far having no luck in london finding any sim free. Lots of 5C's though.

Probably wont get one today now.

Done on purpose by Apple to "create a fever pitch" to make sales looks good. Happens all the time.

That's cheeky! Did that happen with the iPhone 5 when released?

Do Apple get to dictate how O2, EE etc have to sell them? Don't they just supply the phones, then its up to them to use them for contract or sim free? I don't really know, but I would just have assumed they go for contract only initially to get people signed up.

do we think every apple store will be getting a delivery in the middle of the night in order that they will have some tomorrow morning?

or they were just told to stop selling them at some arbitrary point during the day?

When I saw the delivery time from Apple Online I decided not to bother with SIM Free.

Fair enough. Is that the case with all manufacturers?

I would have just assumed that O2, EE etc would prefer to tie people down to a contract, where they have customers locked in for a period of time. As opposed to sell a sim free phone where people aren't tied in so much.

So I can see an advantage to the High Street retailers, but not so much to Apple.

As i understand it you can't get a SIM-free version of the iPhone from anyone but Apple themselves.

I'm sure i read somewhere a while back that Apple maintain a database of phones that are unlocked and the phone checks when it's first setup. If it's not on the list it will lock to the network of the first SIM inserted. So if you want unlocked don't buy from anyone but Apple.

I could be talking out my arse though as i don't really follow iPhone stories, but i'm sure i read something to that effect a couple of years back.

But Apple will only sell to contracts at launch.

They normally do, they don't in the US though, maybe you've seen something about that.

Apple Store Glasgow Buchannan Street sold out (of the 5s) in 45 minutes apparently. And there were maybe 300 people waiting at the Braehead branch when I turned up at 8.25 this morning (I didn't hang about, needless to say).

I don't think its unreasonable to expect, under those circumstances, a store running out of stock of an item. Nothing to do with restricting supply - stock rooms are only so big after all.

No, it's quite literally restricted supply. The iPhone 5c has more than double, even triple the stock at EE and Three.
