Been fiddling with an old laptop, got it running on Ubuntu 11.10 OK-ish.
Was wondering if it is possible to download and install Chromium OS...

Yes it works well on older PCs
Try the nightly Chromium builds here.

just to note, that site isn't updated any more.
last nightly build link is April 2013.

Do not worry about that, the young hacker who run it is an intern at google and yes he does not do his chromium build anymore. Its moved on since then anyway.
Its kept on there to have a play with.
The build on there is stable and is well worth having some fun with on an old laptop to play with.

If you are wanting to get something more permanent for an older laptop, I would suggest getting puppy linux.

But is it better to stick to Ubuntu for long term use?

i tried the mac version on that site a couple of months ago and it wouldn't boot.
