That scene was my first experience of Father Ted! I'd never heard of it and was channel hopping and thought a sit-com about priests wouldn't be up to much. Boy, was I wrong
The first scene I ever saw was on a trailer and featured the visit from a South American priest. His speech was translated by voiceover and there was a joke about making candles from Father Jack's ear wax. I wasn't impressed at all and it was only enthusiastic recommendations from family that led me to watch it.

I find it extraordinary how well Father Ted has aged; very few of the jokes rely on contemporary situations to work. The possible exception is the episode that uses Richard Wilson's Victor Meldrew alter ego but everything else plays on the timeless concepts of laziness, stupidity, drunkenness, greed, eccentricity etc. As a classic sitcom, Father Ted is right up there with the likes of Fawlty Towers (sadly now starting to show its age) and Blackadder.

I loved it when Mrs Doyle sabotaged the tea machine she was given as a present because she couldn't face the horror of making tea in a machine

That was from the Speed one? Dougal in the milkfloat?

Every time I think 'that's my favourite', I think of another one, and let's not forget My Little Horse.

Yes its "Speed". Not actually one of my favourites, but I do love the bit at the end where Dougle sits bolt upright in bed and shouts
"Those ladies were in the nip!!"

I still think Pat Mustard's the best one-off character they've ever had. "Actually, I'm rather sad as I've had to got to a funeral. My last girlfriend died of...exhaustion."

Yes the scene with the mobile Mass catching up with Dougal in the Milk float is just supremely absurd. And then sitting for another 4 hours brainstorming another plan and coming up with..........another Mass! Its just crazily wonderful.

The other thing with the Father Ted is that with all the Fecks/Arses/Girls/dodgy finances etc etc*** there is a genuine warmth running through the whole thing. The characters are all likeable in their way (even father Jack) and they all contribute humour. Its a total triumph.

***I understand that money was just "resting" in his account!

"I hear you're a racist now, Father! How did you get interested in that type of thing?"
I love the bit from the Christmas episode when they put Jack in the kids playroom and they're all shouting "****! Arse!" at him And then he tries to make **** Arse Drink with the letter blocks!

So should we all be racists now?

Don't forget watching 'The Poseidon Adventure' purely because there's a priest in it who saves the day.

I love how Ted then appears to spend ages drawing out a big complicated diagram only for the screen to pan out saying the words "We put the brick on the accelerator".

Is there anything to be said for saying another Mass?

I often think "Its almost like they deliberately selected an awful song so they won't win and have to put the competition on next year"...
