'Device Rejected' - Siemens SL55 on 02
Craig_E
01-02-2005
I have just bought a cheap phone from ebay, fired it up and it refuses to work with an 02 sim (i have tried 2 that def work).

I did the *#0606# code to check that is it def unlocked, which it is.

So what does the error 'Device Rejected' mean? The person i bought it off from eBay said it was working fine for them on T-Mobile... but an unlocked phone is an unlocked phone, and should work anywhere.

I'm racking my brains, but all i can think of is perhaps it's been reported stolen or missing?

I've been searching google all evening with various things, and can't find much, if any, mention of it. It's not mentioned once in the entire manual

Any thoughts?

That message is normally associated with a network lock or some type, when you do the *#0606# command & press info you should get 'unbarred' on each line anything else and there is a network bar somewhere.

If the phone was orginally from T-mobile it would probably have originally been locked, so something could have gone wrong on unlocking it or the IMEI might be blocked, but I think that is a different message (can't remember what).

Have you tried upgrading the firmware, to see if that makes a difference.
You can download the updated firmware here...

http://www.my-siemens.com/com.aperto...rade/main.html

It's official firmware so it won't void your any warranty that might still be on the phone.

Will it work with any other SIMs, could it be a problem there? Some very old O2 SIMS (when I say old I mean Cellnet with out the BT bit old) would only work on the phone that they came with. If its a fairly new SIM it should work on any device.

Failing that give Siemens a call on....

08705 334411

and see what they say, I think all siemens phones come with a 2 year warranty, so if you can get the original recipt, you might be covered.

Woah, thanks for the amazingly supportive message! After receiving very unhelpful emails from both the eBay seller (call 02 at 50p/min) and 02 themselves (wipe the SIM card), i wasn't holding out much hope.

I have tried with 2 sim cards. 1 is admittedly an old Genie sim, but have tried another brand new one.

When doing the code, i got unbarred on all 5 lines, which is what is confusing me- this phone should be unlocked and working fine!

I don't have a data cable for this phone, so upgrading the firmware isn't possible at the mo.

Cheers for the Siemens number, will give them a call. Failing that, i guess it's tracking down the nearest 02 shop, altho i'm worried this is too technical for them to really help with.

02 have now come back to me with

Quote:
“After inserting the O2 SIM card in your Siemens SL 55 phone, the message
displayed on your phone 'Device Rejected' means that the phone is locked to some
other network.”

Not entirely sure it's true, what with the phone itself reporting it is unlocked. Surely the error message would say 'SIM rejected' or 'Insert new sim' something like that.

They are right about the error message, 'Device Rejected' does generally mean there is a network lock somewhere (it's not a very discriptive message I know, the sl65 one is even worse, it makes it sound like your phone will never work again).

Then again the 'unbarred' thing definately seems to point to the phone being unblocked....strange.

Will it let you get into the full menu system? if it will, go to settings, then network & make sure there is a tick next to 'AutoNetwork'. I don't think it will make much difference, but the phone could still be trying to connect to T-Mobile (though if it were, you are more than likely to just get 'network search' on the screen).

Other than that, try this...

http://communications.siemens.com/cd...rNrNrN,00.html

You'll get an automated response, the system is normally quite good at picking up on the right problem, normally after you follow the questions it emails to you through it just tells you to phone siemens, but ocassionally it has the answers.

Also, if the number in my first post wasn't any help there is another number you can try, though calls to it are charged at 75p per minute, the number is 0906 9597500 .

I've had quite a bit of experience with Siemens phones, but I've never come accross this before, so I've asked around a bit. Hopefully someone should get back to me soon, I'll let you know if/when they do, or if you have any updates if you could let me know that would be great.

Thanks for your help mattworld.

After a lot of searching and hair pulling, i've just opted for the easy way out and am returning the phone to the ebay seller!

are you sure the phone isnt stolen? you wouldnt be the 1st person to buy a phone of ebay to discover it was nicked. Ebay was on watchdog recently cuz they dont do enough to protect their customers.

Why won't people learn?

NEVER buy electronics from people on ebay! Especially mobiles. Half of the thime they are old, stolen, found, or second hand!

For example, me friend bought a MiniDisc player from a seller on eBay, which was advertised as brand new, whereas when he recieved it, the box was ripped, the "free" minidisc had songs on it, the adaptor was american and burnt out!

Then he bought a mobile from the same site, which again came with an american charger, but the box was damaged again, and with the warranty menu, the start date was around a month previous to when he bought it... Plus he was charged around £50-£60 more than he could have got it in the shops.

I seem to have drawn my own conclusions from his experiences, and learnt never to buy anything electrical from ebay.

On a Siemens, AFAIK, Device Rejected means the handset is blacklisted... (i.e. reported as stolen). You'd be lucky to get it working without changing the IMEI number...
