Soap Cast Clearouts
Given today's news there are now 7 characters leaving EE with some speculating that there may be even more axings to come. What has been the biggest hit any of the soaps past or present have taken when it comes to mass axings?
I know Hollyoaks has had a few big culls over the years with the biggest being when Paul Marquess came on board in 2010 (he got rid of 11 I think). He also axed quite a few from The Bill and I think he may have been involved in the removal of the Hart family from Family Affairs which was quite a large chunk of the cast. Brian Park also headed up a big cull in the 90's in order to lower the average age of the Corrie cast. Do people feel that cast clearouts like this are good for a show? Or does the turnover of characters hurt the show in the long run? I always thought that the axing of the Hart family revitalised Family Affairs as the show became more dynamic with it's mixture of different families and new location. |

I quite liked the Hart family in Family Affairs. I used to watch the omnibus of that programme religiously every Saturday when they were in it. I sort of lost track when they were killed off though.
An Eastenders clear out has been long overdue. There are so many duds in that show it's hard to know where to start, but at least they are finally listening to viewers. |

I always love a good clearout. It's like when you have a spring clean and you feel happy you have cleared the house of rubbish.
