Hi,
Ok I have the money saved up on a Game gift card and a pre-order on launch day for the PS4. Part of me wants to go ahead and pick the console up and go steaming into the next gen.

However, the more sensible part of me can't find a real justification for going to PS4. The only launch game that isn't also coming out multi platform is Killzone - a series which I have played but never really completed on the PS3. Although I have completed Mecenary on the Vita recently.

I have a PS3 and two gaming PCs (ones a laptop) as well as a Vita and Wii U. The Wii U is mainly for the children now so I tend to ignore it. The Vita is a "pick up and play" machine although I do go through bursts of playing it for a few days!

The PS3 has GTAV - which is a game that I could play for a few months. Also Unchartered of which 2 and 3 I have yet to complete. Also Batman is out in October.

I also have a back log on PC to complete and I found out last night my laptop runs BF3 incredibly well although the servers never seem that busy.

I am trying to decide whether I should wait or just go ahead and get the PS4. Money wise it's not an issue. Time wise yes- so many games to play so little time.

I'm currently waiting for the BF4 beta to get an idea how this "next gen" game will run on my existing PC hardware and on the PS3 before making my full decision.

Anyone else currently hesitating?

You and loads of others.

Releasing a new machine when developers and publishers are still supporting the old gen and constantly getting more out of them is not really a great advert for the new 8th gen consoles.

If they'd developed tech that allowed the machines to be backward compatible they'd probably have a lot more custom.

It's not so much a doubt as that would imply your not impressed with the machine or launch line up, it's more is it worth you getting it at launch. By your description I'd say not, wait till next year. I've held of buying GTA V, it's going to come to the PS4, so will pick it up then.

I was originally going to give my PS3 to my mate, he's still uses a PS2, but after subscribing to PSN+ I've downloaded a few games and want to finish them first, before handing over my PS3. I've withheld buying any new games on the PS3 to avoid the problem your now experiencing.

Sounds logical. I am playing GTAV on the PS3 now and I wouldn't mind if it came to PS4 as I'd still get it even if I have played it to death on PS3. Did the same with GTAIV - had console version but got PC version when it was on sale. It was so much more impressive running at full FPS!

One game that's coming on the PS4 that appeals to me is BF4. I find theres not a huge amount of choice with the servers on PC for BF3 and that's sticking in my mind a bit!

BF4 on PS3 probably wont have the 64 player maps either which would be a little annoying.

But you are right - its a question of "is it worth it?".

Four key reasons I’ll be passing on PS4. Games. Technical ‘Perils’. The PS3. The PC.

The current release schedule features just two games of genuinely strong interest, Witcher 3 and Diablo III. But significantly, both are titles without a 4 launch date and are also available on PS3/PC. Otherwise, not a single title appeals. A lesser concern, but a concern nontheless are the 'perils' of new tech reliability, potential software issues and hefty game pricing. Plus that oft promoted, but currently technically unproven Gaikai Cloud resource. Which is currently without any firm EU launch date.

Final reasoning is the PS3 and PC’s perennial flair. Both provide a bounteous selection of high quality, cut price gaming and media entertainment. Attributes that are fuelled further by the ongoing value of Playstation Plus and Steam‘s unmatched genre variety and exceptional pricing model.

Having said all that, I’ll probably cave around February!

Only reason I'm getting PS4 on release day is BF4 (64 players will be amazing). Otherwise I'd wait until next year.

Could do it on PC but as said before the servers dont seem ultra busy on BF3 PC unless im searching wrong?

BF4 with 64 players is one of the attractions for PS4 for me. That and no messing around with it to make it run smoothly!!!!

I see no reason to be an early adopter. The PS3 is still being supported strongly with some top titles still to come out on it. I expect I'll get a PS4 in a year or so.

I've always been a late adopter. I expect i'll get it in a couple of years time once they release the slimline version with no bugs at half the price

Argos are doing a PS3 bundle with The Last of Us and GTA V for £199.99.

That's an exceptionally good deal.

I'd snap it up if I didn't already have it!!!!

I think I'll make my decision when I see the BF4 betas on PS3 and PC.

If I don't get the PS4 at launch I'll probably use my gift card to pay for the PC versions of batman, watchdogs and BF4 as well as the new COD game.

Doubts? Not in the slightest.

There are loads of multi-platform games coming up with massive potential, and PS4 (and Xbox One) is going to show these off at their best.

Factor in the Sony exclusives, the F2P games, the Indies, the Vita integration and the second screen functions, along with upcoming next-gen only experiences such as The Division and PS4 is going to be worth every penny to me.

In any case, I'll still have my PS3, Xbox 360 and PC (with an Xbox One hopefully added next year) to play any other games worth getting.

I can't wait.

I have no doubts about buying the machine. The only thing stopping me is lack of money. Just £150 saved in the PS4 fund so far.

If I had the money I would probably buy it along with Assassin's Creed IV and Watch Dogs in their PS4 goodness.

In terms of feature set when you compare what has gone before it the PS4 is going to be a crap console. BC and multi-media features replaced by social networking OS looks a load of wank as well.

Dude will you quit your delusion about the next-gen consoles being so terrible.

You do realise the same happens every generation right? Games continue to be release on the then old systems for ages?

You do know why right? You do realise that not every single one of the 74 million people will go out on launch day and replace their console right?

The same goes for any new iteration of technology.

As for backwards compatibility, if you'd like a console that's a third bigger, costs probably about a third to a half more, potentially uses more power, runs hotter then by all means protest. You'd probably be the first one on here moaning about big the consoles were and how expensive they are if they had it.

Nope that's incorrect. Never said they were terrible, just not massive improvements over what is already available. You only need to exaggerate because you've been shown up.

Also, plenty of releases on the PS3 when it was launched were not available on the PS2, you know like Resistance: FOM, Ridge Racer 7, Motorstorm, The Elder Scrolls IV.

What 8th gen and PS4 exclusives are there?

The issue of backwards compatibility was raised when the PS3 specs were announced way back when, they've had years and years to research & develop tech capable of doing so without compromising size, power usage, etc.

There would be far more people prepared to purchase a launch PS4 if this feature was included, that you cannot deny that, yet the fact that every major release in the near future is available on the 7th gen consoles tells you everything you need to know.

You can bitch and sulk all you want, if you don't like the fact I'm not easily impressed then just ignore me rather than get upset about it.

FIFA 14, out on PS3 before PS4 (naturally).

Grand Turismo 6. The daddy of my purchases. Not available as yet on PS4.

I've cancelled my pre-order.

Well, we could be picky and say some games you have listed aren't strictly launch titles. Motorstorm and The Elder Scrolls IV didn't release until 2007. They may have been available for the PS3's European launch, but they certainly weren't around for the PS3's global debut in November 2006 which is where you are drawing your comparisons with PS4.

As for those "exclusive" 8th gen day one launch games that aren't on PS3, well there's Killzone, DriveClub, Knack, Blacklight Retribution, The Playroom, Resogun, War Thunder.....But, if you do want to include the wider launch window as you did in your example, then we can add the likes of Infamous Second Son, The Crew, Daylight, Planetside 2, Deep Down, Mercenary Kings, N++, The Order 1886 and so on.

As far as backwards compatibility goes, the wildly differing nature of the new hardware to the PS3's Cell processor makes this extremely difficult. That may sound like a cop out, but it's the direction the industry NEEDS to move in. Besides, once Sony's Gaikai system gets going the PS4 will be able to play host to a massive back catalogue of PS1, PS2 and PS3 games, quickly rendering the situation largely moot.

Anyway, cross-generation games are perfectly normal. They have always happened because they HAVE to happen at first. The PS4 user base is currently zero. Developers and Publishers have to ensure they are going to make money on their investments, which they do by targeting BOTH generations of hardware.

The backwards compatibility gripe is a strange one. There are very few, if any, PS2 games that I really want to play with the amount of games for the PS3 and if I did I would play them on my PS2.

And same goes for PS3 games. If I want to play them I'll play them on my PS3. Why would I use a PS4 to play old games?

Not a deal breaker for me either. I'll still be able play all my PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs after I get my PS4.

You're being embarrassingly pedantic here and incorrect.

Motorstorm was launched in 2006. Get your facts right.

So now you're shifting the goalposts to suit your argument, but criticise others?! Pathetic!

It is. It's something which should have been addressed and produced for this gen. They had years to research this and deliver and what do we get? "Sharing". Wow!
