Hiya.

I've got a oldish lcd device whose screen appears to be dead, well not quite. I can still read some of the text & buttons on the screen but there is no light coming from it & I can only see stuff if I tilt it at an angle.

Does this mean the LCD is totally dead or could it be a simple matter of the ribbon cable coming loose a bit?

I don't really want to take it to bits if there's not much hope. So is this how LCD screens die?

Backlight has failed. If it was just aged then it would go dim slowly so probably the invertor that drives it has failed. What size/make/model is it and just how old?

It's a 7 year old Dell Inspiron laptop. I did actually just take the screen to bits & there were no loose connections. I'll try & get a 2nd hand one from ebay & swap the screens.

If it is the inverter that drives the backlight then changing screens won't make any difference. On most Dell laptops I've worked on the inverter has been separate to the screen.

Might be worth swapping the inverter first then see if the screen needs changing. An inverter is possibly cheaper than a screen as well.

What does that component look like in a laptop?

Edit ah yeah, that part is on the bottom of the screen, looks easy to swap out, thanks.
