BT Price rise to hit around 10 million
Around 10 million BT customers face phone and broadband price rises of up to 6.5% from January
BT has announced it will hit 10m home phone customers with higher line rental and raise call and broadband prices by twice the rate of inflation from January next year. And in a move that could potentially trap millions, BT will 'opt in' users to paid-for services that were previously free so that customers will pay a new £1.75 monthly charge unless they contact the company to cancel. The price hikes represent a significant squeeze on existing customers as BT competes with rivals Sky for the paid-for TV market. In most cases prices are rising by more than twice the current 2.7 per cent rate of inflation and even prices on services such as Timeline - previously known as the Speaking Clock - are being raised. BT call customers will receive letters in the coming days to notify them of the price changes that kick in from January 4 2014. The changes mean that:

Line rental will increase by 3.5 per cent from £15.45 to £15.99 a month.
Existing customers with call plans will see the price rise by around 6 per cent.
The set-up fee for landline calls made outside of packages will go up 6.4 per cent from 13.87p to 14.76 pence a call.
The price per minute for calls to landlines and 0870 numbers made outside packages will go up from 1.11p to 1.18p (6.3 per cent) in the evenings, and from 8.41p to 8.95p (6.8 per cent) during the day.
Most existing broadband package customers will see prices increase by 6.5 per cent.
Previously free BT Answer 1571 and BT Privacy with Caller Display will now each cost £1.75 a month. Customers will be 'opted in' if they have ever used the services in the past.
Charges where customers exit their contract early are being raised by between 20 per cent and 30 per cent.
Timeline - previously known as the Speaking Clock - to rise 6.4 per cent from 34.4p to 36.6p
http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/b...st_read_module |

Well they have to fund BT Sport somehow.
Does anyone really think they could provide 3 TV Sports channels with premium content for no extra cost to BT Broadband customers? I dont want their 'free' channels, I would rather have Plusnet prices (£19.99 vs BT £26.99) for unlimited top speed fibre broadband, and their Line rental is cheaper too. BT Sport is an expensive operation to run: Transponder rental 3 x HD slots 3 x SD Slots Freeview Space (mega expensive) x 2 Premier League and other sports rights Studios at Olympic park Presenter salaries for the likes of Claire Balding, David James and Stevie Gerrard Cheap it aint, and they need to get the money back. |

Since the cost is higher than the rate of inflation does that mean we can cancel at no extra charge within a contract? I think they prices are taking the P*** and to be honest as much as I've tried to stand by BT and want to give them custom this is the final straw, it's liek they are trying to force people off landlines!

I'm not to happy about this. Although BT are a good service. They are going over the top a little with the price of there line rental. We don't use the BT landline phone much to make calls during a weekday. I have BT Infinity 2 unlimited
with evening and weekends calls and I'm 5 months into a 16 month contract with a £7.25 discount a month on the normal price. I also have the BT Vision player Unlimited. I wonder if I will still get some sort of discount as I will still be in contract with BT come January. Darren |

BT must surely issue a statement soon these increases so that customers know exactly what is happening. The increases of around 6% are way above the August inflation rate of 2.7% BT customers wishing to leave will find it a legal minefield and clause 54 of the T&Cs states: "Except in the circumstances detailed in paragraph 51, if we let you know about a change to the price or the terms and conditions of a service which is to your material disadvantage, you will not have to pay a charge if you decide to end that service early, unless the Tariff Guide says otherwise. However, once we have told you about such a change, using one of the methods detailed in paragraph 50, you must let us know within 10 days that you want to end that service by giving us the written notice set out in paragraph 21. Only the services that are directly affected by the changes we make can be ended without paying an early termination charge for that service and this agreement will continue to apply to any other services that are not affected by those changes." So, you may be able to cancel the line rental but, if like me, your broadband contract is until September 2014 it may be Catch22 I think that as having BT broadband appears to be dependent on having a BT line that the two are linked and it should, therefore, be possible to cancel both without penalty The thing that annoys me most is the £1.75 charge for 1571 and call minder which have been free for years with BT Privacy at Home. As far as I'm concerned the increase is 45p (which is immaterial) on the line rental + £1.75. A total increase of £2.20 is really taking the proverbial |

Will Ed Milliband be demanding they freeze their prices after the next election.

![]() Funny how BT denied that the increase was due to 'Free' BTSports channels. Of course they would deny it because then they'd have to admit that their 'Free BTSports' offer was just a scam, scam to mislead the BT customers.

https://www.bt.com/static/wa/account...gin/login.html This increase is in addition to the line rental, call charges, Caller Display and 1571 increases. About £1.11 it will go up a month for my Infinity 2 with evening and weekend calls come January. As im still under contract and get a monthly discount. It also lists unlimited evening and weekend call plan under no longer for sale. Don't BT offer a free evening and weekend call package anymore. I got it combined with my broadband monthly fee. It will from January now cost us an extra £1.75 for BT Privacy with Caller Display. We have been using this service since a few months before before mum died over 2 years ago as dad likes to know whos calling before he answers phone as hes 30% deaf and now in his early 80s. Also as said it will cost us more on line rental and we don't use the phone much during the week. As im a work weekdays and dad don't phone much. Due to him being partly deaf as I have said. Landline was used a little more when mum was alive before she tane right no well. Darren |

Used to think a phone was good value but costs a fortune now to have one. I'm actually getting to the stage of scared to use the bloomin thing. Things like 08xx numbers can be different prices forcing us to use services like say no to 08. Now they are basically trying to force us off seeing who is calling you meaning having to pick up all the sales guff. I presume those companies have complained to bt or offered some money cause nobody is answering withelds or 'calling'
Used to be a mobile was the expensive route and home phone was just a norm.....how times have changed and it seems to have reversed. Bt seem intent on self destruction. I personally will be opting back out of bt privacy and 1571 |

I am currently looking into going 'fibre' in the next few months (Subject to Openreach rolling it out to my street when they predicted - Between now and Xmas) but seems I should start looking at everyone else other than BT as my provider.
I don't like sports (any!) so I don't want or need sports and don't want to have to pay extra not to watch them. |

I have left BT because of the prices rises. I did it within the 10 days allowed and cancelled the whole lot. I have now moved to Plusnet (yes I know they are owned by BT). I now save over £10 a month for 4 months because of the discount then after that it will £5 saving per month over BT's prices.
The thing I like is that call centres are UK based and they know what they are talking about as I had a major problem with the switch over and it was sorted out with a couple of hours. |

When the price rises were announced i rang them up and requested that my caller ID be removed from January, the lady said yes no problem in January it will cease on your line.
It stopped working the next day, cheers love. |

I removed 1571 and caller id from the website. Not paying them for that. It's a shame they went this route to make my service worse for the money.

See if this works. .. https://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerOrders/control/orderproduct?productId=CON-27455&productKey=CON-CHANGE-CF |

So my BT broadband price is going up, yet my download speed will stay the same as BT cannot be arsed to upgrade my local exchange.
Yep, I'll be cancelling. |
