Channel 823 on Sky .....
Westy2

.... seems to be showing a foreign dubbed version of SJA.

Surely this is the sort of thing that should be blanked out to Uk viewers as the broadcasting organisation should not have the rights?

Have you actually taken a look at the channel before posting?

1. I don't have Sky
2. I don't own a telly
3. I was thinking it might be a joke thread relating to the Comic-Con/trailer/licence fee hoo-hah. But I wasn't sure.

823 Has "Dr Who" at 8:30 this evening (Sun) - no idea which episode.

Of course channel 209 is running room 9 on Saturday nights, about a young policewoman working for Captain Harkness in a covert unit investigating paranormal events

There used to be loads of clips of dubbed Doctor Who on youtube, which were sometimes hilarious. I bet a lot of them have been taken down now.

Thought I quite like the Japanese Doomsday I've just found - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dY19zFvsStU

Im still puzzled that we can see it in its dubbed glory here in the UK.

Ain't the Beeb normally s**t hot when it comes to rights reasons, or is it because it's dubbed & on a channel not normally frequented by UK English speaking viewers (without getting racist! ).

Why assume they don't have the rights? Presumably they bought the rights to air the shows from the BBC.

I suppose the BBC sold them the rights for this particular foreign language version, and let them broadcast it wherever they like. If not there'll be a lawyer putting new batteries in his calculator right now.

There are only a small number of satellites that supply TV for Europe, and since everyone has gone digital there are no inherent technical barriers to reception; France and the former Soviet bloc used to transmit television in a different format than everyone else but that's no longer the case.

That's finally created a large enough market for niche channels like JeemTV, which is Sky 823 — it's a children's arabic channel available across Europe via satellite. All they have to do is send one feed up and get the appropriate sales teams to allocate them a space in the listings, in this case Sky's.

I would dare imagine they're able to show Sarah Jane and Doctor Who because they have a worldwide license to the arabic version. The whole business model is based on massive geographical broadcast to a locally very small audience, so they will have bought rights based on the audience not the geography.

Didn't watch for too long as I never really liked the episode when I understood the dialogue, even less so when I couldn't.

From past experience, I think it may be a grey area where you probably shouldn't be able to watch it in the UK, but the rights holder has decided to ignore it as it isn't a significant problem.

I haven't used satellite since the days of analog TV, but back then a few european channels switched to encryption because of pressure from the US networks. i can remember watching MASH reruns on some channel that used subtitles rather than dubbing, until it was finally encrypted. It wasn't a subscription channel, they just had to stop people watching outside of their territory because they used so much english language content.

The film studios and sports rights are much stricter.

It's dubbed in to Arabic so isn't likely to be understood by the majority of people in the UK.

823 is Jeem (the Al Jazeera Kids Channel), they have the rights to a variety of BBC/CBBC shows, which they dub in Arabic.
