I would normally rather watch my own mother take a shower than watch the X factor, but for some inexplicable reason I found myself watching most of last night's episode. I really wish I hadn't.

I realise my sentiments will be nothing new but I just felt like I had to vent somewhere as it did (I'm sad to admit) make me quite angry.

For starters, who the hell ARE these judges?? Quite what Sharon Osborne knows about music, and what makes a song great is absolutely beyond me. Yet she sits there expressing all the authority of someone who invented music. And sound. And everything else that exists. The woman's an egotistical, witless, moron who knows nothing. About anything.
Same goes for Louis Walsh. Is there anyone in the public eye (outside of politics) who exhibits less wit and real knowledge of his chosen subject than this Cretin? I have an airing cupboard that knows more about music than this idiot.
Of the four, Gary Barlow is the ONLY one who has any business judging musical ability. I'd NEVER (even in an emergency) listen to his music, but I can at least acknowledge that he's a capable songwriter, so from that point of view he could be said to have some authority on the subject of musical ability.
And then there's this Nicole person. I don't think there exists (in a public figure), such a massive gulf between who she is and who she thinks she is. I believe she used to sing in the Pussy Cat Dolls, which in itself, should render her entirely unsuitable to comment on anyone else's musical talent. It's like asking a cat to be on the Nobel prize committee. She also appears to have a personality which consists of a handful of settings (including Faux-Emotion, Faux-Enthusiasm, hyper narcissism, and industrial strength vanity), all of them nauseating to a quite worrying degree.

The show itself is STILL massively dependent on sob stories and massively exaggerated emotion, all of which is pumped up to 11 by the ever willing judges (and contestants) - one mention of some guy's kid was enough to send him into tears. What the hell was the story there?? Was his kid born with no arms, legs or head? Or body? I suspect not. Where was the booing? Or are people REALLY that stupid to see what's going on?
And then we have Louis chiming in with one of his 7 sentences that he knows how to say - "How much does this mean to you?". For F*CK'S SAKE!! As if any of the deluded wannabes are going to shrug their shoulders and mumble, "Meh, not much, really".
Then there's the classic "I've made my decision" after which it still takes 20 seconds of "tension" before the big reveal, like the judge who said it had crashed and had to be reset by one of the production crew.
I also noticed the show has a new method of exploiting/humiliating the contestants - by picking them for the next round then ditching them because someone sang better than them. 1) Why not just get more chairs to sit on, and 2) to make it more humiliating, why not have one of the production staff on hand to actually pull the seat from under them as they're about to sit on it - thus indicating they're really getting binned?

This entire show exists entirely as a money making scam. It has NOTHING whatsoever to do with music, or talent or genuinely doing something good in this horrible, cruel world we live in. It's about cynically exploiting everyone from the audience to the contestants.
And, from a personal viewpoint, as someone who adores music (listening to, and writing/recording) and loves good, thoughtful, ENTERTAINING TV, this programme is everything that's wrong in the world. It not only encourages laziness (by giving the impression fame is merely an audition away - no hard work required) but it actually discourages originality by relying on the same old tired musical clichés.

The sooner it's dead and gone, the sooner it can be replaced by some other mindless, turgid crap (which entertainment doesn't HAVE to be)

Ha ha - good idea - or even better get the audience to chant OFF, OFF, OFF, OFF as they walk off crying their hearts out.

I know what you mean it's pretty awful what happens.

There was a mini series called Black Mirror (Charlie Brooker) it was series 1 under the title '15 million merits' and they took the rip out of X factor - last night really reminded me of that.

Love the idea that the jufges suffer a system crash and have to reboot. I think they need some more phrases programmed in too. "You owned that stage" needs to be retired.

Second to last paragraph sums up the whole ethos of the show in my opinion - that is why the show adds nothing to the music scene apart from flood it with a number of average acts designed to make money in a short space of time and then disappear leaving no lasting impression on the music scene.

Great post and very entertaining.

One small point of disagreement: vanity aside, Nicole Scherzinger can sing. Like REALLY sing. Her performance of Phantom of the Opera and then in last year's final blew me away. But that aside, everything else you say I'd go along with.

It doesn't matter. It's an entertainment show. If anyone good comes out of it, it's a bonus.

Electric chairs would be a good idea as they wouldn't be so keen to rush to sit on them and it would weed out the rubbish acts.

If this is your first time watching TXF, you've managed to sum up the show perfectly. Something people who have watched for 10 years still haven't quite got to.

Every one else they wanted probably refused :d.

It does make you wonder who else they might have approached.

When it comes to being a mentor/manager, which is kind of what the judges are meant to be for the acts. Then Sharon might be the most qualified.
She saved Ozzy's career after he was dumped out of Black Sabbath for being consumed by drink and drugs, turning him into a big star in his own right. Also she was the brains behind the huge Ozzfest tour that went on year after year and was the one who pitched MTV the idea for The Osbournes TV show, which was one of the channel's biggest successes. So capitalizing on an opportunity seems to be her forte.

Though I question why she wants to associate herself with X-Factor when she seems to have a passion for rock/metal. Plus the motivation to drive Ozzy's career was obviously based on being his wife, although she has managed other acts too.

But when it comes to wanting someone fighting for you and your career, I'd certainly want it to be Sharon out of the choice of judges.

Ozzy is a good example of a someone that wouldn't of even made it through auditions - and would have probably been mocked and laughed at by the judges. Yet he is awesome and loved by millions.

Most of them choose generic, boring songs and the ones that try and do something different just aren't good enough.

Great post, seems to sum most of the series up. Although Nicole is a fantastic singer, the rest of your points are completely valid.

LOL!

Have thought this way for years. The public really are brainwashed into going along with this cliched tosh. The end result is a miliionaire (Cowell) gets rich off the back of the viewers/voters. Lets face it, few of the acts make successful careers.

I hardly ever watch it as it is a massive cringe, but I have seen it occasionally as it is such a cultural phenomenon in the UK & its interesting to observe.

The sooner it's dead and gone, the sooner it can be replaced by some other mindless, turgid crap (which entertainment doesn't HAVE to be)
Surely im not the only one who couldnt be arsed to read past the first sentence

Bringing Sharon back was a mistake, why on earth did they think the return of the mother hen was a good idea, I just don't get it.
I cant stand her . She just said , and I quote " never in my entire career " . What career would that be ??. Didn't know he had a career ?. She is a wife of a washed up 70 s rockstar and has never actually done any tying her self .

What makes me laugh is that Cowell is not interested in the show anymore, he doesn't appear on it much (if at all), so why should anyone else give two hoots.

At least it will provide a secure future for his illegitimate soon to be born child
