Just wanted to say hi.

Only joking. Just a heads up to say that this show starts tonight starring Stephen merchant. The most likeable and probably the most talented of the co creators of the office.

It looks very good.

Wednesday 16th October at 10pm on Sky Atlantic.

Iíll be giving this a go as Iíve always liked Stephen Merchant more than Ricky Gervais if Iím honest.

Having watched the first episode I doubt I'll be back for more. It's that sense of embarrassment humour familiar from the office or any Ricky Gervais show that makes me cringe more than I laugh

At least mention what pace this thread is at. You said it starts tonight and i couldn't find it anywhere. Then i realised you meant it starts tonight in AMERICA. Label the thread accordingly so there's no confusion.

I've watched the first two episodes and I have to say I did laugh.

Both episodes have been based around the Stephen Merchant
character trying to get laid, and while his failures are funny I hope they change it up a bit as this will get boring very quickly.

Only seen the first episode so far, and it was OK, though I preferred the more low-key scenes, as opposed to those calculated to cause most embarassment... I frankly wasn't keen on his best friend, though the guy in the wheelchair was a good character (it took me a while to recognise him from Alias), and his tenant has potential too, as long as they avoid her and the Merchant character hooking up... will give it a few more episodes to see where it's going.

I was pretty unimpressed, although to be fair this could be one which takes time to grow on you. I just felt like we've been there and done that with this type of character in all the precious Gervais/Merchant comedies.

Agree with Metal Mickey, the episode was at its best in its quieter, more poignant moments, such as the scenes of Stuart eating his microwave meals alone.

It's one hell of a cast, though - Christine Woods from FlashForward, Nate Torrence from Studio 60 and Kevin Weisman from Alias.

I scribbled a one-off review of the pilot. I won't be doing any others, although I will watch episode 2 to give it a chance. It wasn't terrible, just not that great.

Some genuine laugh out loud moments in this, which surprised me as the trailer made it out to be embarrassingly unfunny. has potential (I've always thought Merchant's writing was a big factor in Gervais' success)

merchant makes me laugh. so watching this first episode last night made me laugh. i'll be back next week. it's only had the first episode shown on sky atlantic so would be a shame if people definitively judged it on that alone. give it a chance to build...

I thought it was pretty funny. Merchants physical awkwardness is hilarious. The scenes with the guy in the wheelchair trying ot get out of the car outside the nightclub was hilarious and the scene where Merchant was sitting on the tall stool and he leant over and fell on top of the table full of drinks was also very funny.

Would be class if true. Wouldn't be surprised either.

On a side note.. how predictable that this thread has seen a few digs at Gervais.

Merchant makes me laugh. which is fortunate because he always plays the same character.

not that i completely understand the character. like why he's in LA. but also he plays a bungling socially awkward man that he always does. but seems to have quite a genuine, tender and caring relationship with his tenant.

It was always going to happen, gervais and merchant used to come as one but merchant rarely got any plaudits

Agreed. To use a football analogy, it's like Cloughie and Taylor all over again.

I may from time to time use that analogy. Love it.

The small bit I loved the most was when Merchant was making a note of what drinks everyone wanted and the guy asked him 'what beers do you have on tap?'

I liked episode 1. Yes it was a little old school cringey but there were some laugh out loud moments and the relationship with him and the girl lead looks promising. Well worth another look

yeah it was funny.

there were bits that were just a bit to uncomfortable for me to watch though. it's a very fine line.
