Kim Taylforth joins EastEnders
EastEnders bosses have today announced that actress Kim Taylforth has joined the show, playing the role of Kathy Beale’s sister Stephanie Hills. Kim’s elder sister Gillian Taylforth appeared in the soap as Kathy between 1985 and 2000 before she was killed off in 2006, to facilitate the return story of her son Ben Mitchell.

New executive producer I’ve Got Class made the announcement this afternoon admitting that Kim’s casting as Stephanie is ‘a wonderful achievement’. The character’s introduction will air early next year although it has been confirmed that rewrites to current scripts could mean that the character shall appear later on than originally planned in order to ensure that all loose ends form Lorraine Newman’s tenure have been wrapped up.

Gillian Taylforth, who now appears in Hollyoaks as Sandy Roscoe, expressed her delight that her sister had been cast in the role. When pressed by journalists, Gillian revealed that she is ‘majorly excited about the character of Stephanie’ and she is ‘sure that Kim will win over viewers with her portrayal’.

INTERVIEW: EastEnders exec I’ve Got Class teases her vision for the show, future storylines

Hello there! You were only recently made producer of the soap, yet we hear that you are already throwing yourself into the role. When shall we see your own work on the small screen?
You shall see it very soon, actually. The first thing I wanted to do was provide a talking point for the show, so I had to take into account the criticisms of viewers. Therefore, I ordered rewrites for the entirety of the autumn – I had known about my role since last month, so I did have a good few weeks to ensure I was pleased with the quality of the upcoming episodes! The cast reshot a lot of the material, some of them were a little unhappy about the extra workload understandably but I have been reassured that those individuals are now thrilled with the output.

That statement hints that you recognise that fans are unhappy with the state of the show. Is that the case? And how do you plan on rectifying this?
In some ways, I recognise that the show is in bad form. There has been a lack of plots this past year, made evident by the fact I know people were posting [on the forums] that they could not watch the soap for weeks at a time and still have a solid knowledge of what was going on. I don’t want that to continue into my era – I want the show to be event television once more. I truly believe that the viewers are the show, without them we wouldn’t be here today. I have my own ways of winning them round, don’t you worry.

One of the major criticisms of recent times has been the failure to utilise some of the serials strongest actors. Will underrated actors such as Lindsey Coulson, Linda Henry and Jamie Borthwick receive strong plots of their own?
Funnily enough, those three actors are each going to start a new chapter in their respective character’s lives. You shall see Jamie [Jay Brown] flourish in a few weeks’ time, we actually have just finished filming a week of special episodes centred around him – although we still have the difficult job of filming the remainder of the following episodes. We obviously don’t film in sequence, so let’s just say that Jamie is spending a lot of hours in the make-up department whilst they do their work on him – only for him to film two or three scenes before reverting to his usual look.

With Jay becoming central to the show, could he possibly be involved in a male rape storyline? That idea has been tossed around the forums for quite a while now…
No, it isn’t anything along those lines. However, I am not ruling out similar plots for other characters in a few months or even years’ time – gritty situations like that are what the residents of Albert Square are famous for facing. Jay’s story centres on his past, with key focus on his father’s death. We have welcomed a former character back into the show especially for that story and they shall be sticking around for around four weeks.

A returning character sounds interesting, although some viewers are tiring of the revolving door surrounding the show.
The returnee isn’t permanent, I must reinforce that. I feel as though that returning characters work better if they do have an arc to complete as this one does. I wouldn’t say no to bringing back former characters and we are in discussions with one at the moment although I have no plans on bringing characters back on a regular basis – and certainly not for storylines which are current cast are capable of handling. When you have got such a great cast – why not give them some of the plots?

The second part of the interview shall be up tomorrow.

Kara Tointon to make temporary EastEnders return
We at Digital Spy can exclusively reveal that Kara Tointon shall reprise her role as Dawn Swann later this year – having signed a four week contract with the soap.

The character shall make her return in early November and will then appear on-screen until the beginning of the festive season. It has been confirmed that Dawn shall be a heavy presence in the upcoming story arc for Jay Brown, teased in I’ve Got Class’ interview with us.

Speaking of Dawn’s return, a spokesperson for the show told us: ‘’Dawn returns to the Square and is immediately thrown into the action, her first week back on the Square is highly emotional. The events of the week give Dawn a reason to stay on Albert Square for longer than she intended, although the nature for her return is far from upbeat. Kara Tointon and Jamie Borthwick both give stunning performances in their scenes together.’’

Since departing the BBC soap in 2009, Kara appeared – and was crowned champion – on Strictly Come Dancing. She has also won favourable reviews for her stage work.

‘EastEnders’ to introduce new family
A new family shall be joining the show in the coming months as the Dawson family make their arrival on Albert Square. The characters and their backstories, along with the identity of those playing them, are below.

FAMILY BACKGROUND: OVERVIEW: It all started in the late eighties when fresh faced schoolboy Jamie Dawson became infatuated with the 'new girl', Lisa Watkins. Their romance peaked in 1988, when Jamie lost his virginity to Lisa - only for her to discover that she was pregnant with his child. With her parents threatening to shun her unless she proved she had a stable life ahead of her, Lisa and Jamie married in early 1989 - months after their seventeenth birthdays. Their first child, Will came along in February of that year. Life for the young couple was hard, although with the newly found support of Lisa's parents they managed to get through it: until 1992, when Lisa found that she was expecting again. A baby girl, Kimberley, was born just days after Christmas. Once again, despite tears and tantrums, the couple plowed through it. When Lisa found out she was to have a third child in 1994, the couples relationship was pushed to breaking point, rectified by the birth of their third and final child Robbie in January 1995. The coming years saw their diaries overflow with dentist appointments, parents' evenings and the like, with the couple rarely receiving any time for themselves. Life continued as normal until 2012, when Lisa believed that she was pregnant with their fourth child - however, what she believed to be the signs of pregnancy were actually signs of cervical cancer, which she was diagnosed with. The doctor's told the couple that they would be offering Lisa palliative care and she tragically passed away in their family home in May 2013. Each member of the family has found their own way to deal with her passing, both constructive and destructive.

JAMIE DAWSON (ED STOPPARD): Jamie has been deeply affected by the loss of his wife Lisa, as he had grown up beside his soulmate. Lisa's death has left him a shadow of his former self, his charming nature replaced by one filled with feelings of morose and self pity. He moves his family to Albert Square with hopes for a fresh start, although he realises it will take more than a new home and a lick of paint in order to ease the pain that Lisa's death has inflicted upon him. Jamie remains in contact with Lisa's parents but the relationship he holds with them is fractured. Life on Albert Square will likely be a welcome distraction from his unresolved feelings for his deceased wife, although whether he will survive the loves and losses Albert Square will present him with is another question.

WILL DAWSON (ALEX ROE): As the eldest child of Jamie and Lisa, Will has the largest collection of memories of his mother. This has proved to be a blessing and a curse for him as he grieves over her passing, as he reflects upon the harsh words that he witnessed her exchange with his father over the years. Being the oldest sibling, Will has the strongest connection to his father, although Will's knowledge over the darker moments in Jamie's relationship with Lisa is likely to push them both to breaking point...

KIMBERLEY DAWSON (FREYA MAVOR): Charmed with her mother's good looks, Kimberley's continued presence in the now predominantly male Dawson household stirs up bad memories for all of the Dawson men. The striking resemblance she shares to her mother has proved all too much for her father on numerous occasions, which has left Kimberley feeling alone in her grief time and time again. She's bound to break a few hearts on Albert Square - but how quickly will her own broken heart mend itself?

ROBBIE DAWSON (TOM LEACH): The 'baby' of the family, his mother's illness and eventual death affected his exam results heavily, so he has now given up on his dreams of going to university. His grandparents have repeatedly told him that Lisa would be furious if she knew that Robbie had thrown his bright future away but Robbie has continuously stated that the time he spent with his mother, which then affected his studying time, is far more precious than a few letters on a piece of paper.

The Dawson family shall arrive on-screen in January 2014 and shall start filming early next month.

EastEnders announces three more departures
Three more characters have been axed from EastEnders, bringing the total number of upcoming departures to eleven.

Tamwar Masood (Himesh Patel), Fatboy (Ricky Norwood) and Kim Fox (Tameka Empson) have all been axed by the show's new executive producer I've Got Class. The characters shall exit on-screen in coming months, alongside Ava Hartman (Clare Perkins), Sam James (Cornell S. John), Poppy Meadow (Rachel Bright), AJ Ahmed (Phaldut Sharma), Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing) and Carl White (Daniel Coonan).

Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) shall have departed in the week prior to I've Got Class' first episode block. Michael Moon (Steve John Shephard) and Alice Branning (Jasmyn Banks) will exit over the Halloween period.

EXCLUSIVE: Two road accidents to air in the coming months
The cast of EastEnders have this week been spotted on-location filming two separate road accidents. The news comes after it was reported that three further characters shall be departing the soap in the coming months.

The first, set to air in the first week of November, involves Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) and returning character Dawn Swann (Kara Tointon). The night shoots took place in Hamstead Heath, where a guest character was spotted wandering around in 'bloody' make-up. The scenes are expected to see the character of Jay run down a cyclist following a confrontation with Dawn.

The second road accident is much more significant as a minibus carrying several of the teenage characters crashes into a lorry before flipping over onto its roof. Firefighters and special effects teams were on hand to oversee the filming. It is believed that the crash shall have up to three fatalities. Those seen on set include: Fatboy (Ricky Norwood), Poppy Meadow (Rachel Bright), Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa), Lucy Beale (Hetti Bywater), Peter Beale (Ben Hardy), Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), Tamwar Masood (Himesh Patel) and Joey Branning (David Witts).

Thank you for your feedback.

Dawn's character has always been hit and miss for me. Sometimes I loved her (Mad May, Jase's death) and sometimes I hated her (affair with Phil) but I feel as though Jay's new story arc needed her to be there, for the beginning at least. She's only around for just over a month - although she could be back for a few weeks in 2014 to wrap up Jay's story.

EastEnders press release: What to expect in the coming months
After weeks of waiting, I've Got Class' work finally comes into effect tomorrow: and we believe the upcoming weeks are absolute corkers. The first episode of her era was penned by Simon Ashdown and features the arrival of a previously unannounced character, described by I've Got Class as being 'a lost soul with an excellent story to tell'.

Other notable highlights of her first week of episodes include the returns of Jean Slater and Ollie Walters, who left the soap last month with plans to start a new life together. Within just days of returning to Albert Square, Jean finds herself in an emotional showdown with troubled villain Michael Moon.

It is Michael Moon's Halloween exit which is likely to be one of the main talking points of the EP's tenure. It has been confirmed that at least one character shall be killed in the episodes. The identity of the deceased, as well as the circumstances of their death, are being kept under wraps until transmission.

In the aftermath of the Halloween episodes, there will be little time for the shattered residents to piece their lives back together - as new traumas are just around the corner. In the first week of November, Jay Brown is stunned by the return of his father's ex-fiance Dawn Swann. Their reunion is short-lived and unhappy, as Jay soon becomes involved in a road accident.

Another road accident is set to occur in the first week of December. A day trip ends in tragedy for the teens when their minibus crashes into a lorry - with the crash claiming up to three lives. The tragedy shall see the residents of Albert Square become stronger - just in time for Christmas.

Christmas in Albert Square is uneventful compared to previous years, although there is still drama to be found on every door. This year, the residents of Walford look set to finally have their long desired 'happy Christmas' although, we can assure you that drama still sits on every doorstep. Whether it be mourning the deaths of loved ones, uninvited guests or an awkward atmosphere over the Christmas dinner - it may be tame in comparison to the previous years but it sure as hell will be unmissable television!

Monday 21st October 2013
As the market is tended to by its respective stall owners, a bedraggled young woman makes her way, barefoot, through the crowd. Sideways glances are cast upon her but the woman continues her journey, oblivious to the commotion that her appearance on Albert Square has caused. As the woman passes the clothes stall, Kat steps in front of her, asking if the woman is okay. The woman tries to step around Kat, although Kat holds her arm out to block the woman from leaving - once again inquiring about the woman's welfare. Kat's fellow market trader Kirsty warns the crowd to stop gawping at the woman and at her request, they do so. For a third time, Kat makes an attempt to speak to the woman - and although now she had only received an icy stare in response, Kat is sympathetic towards the woman when she becomes visibly distressed by the attention she has drawn to herself. Kat removes her money belt and passes it to Kirsty, before taking the woman's hand and leading her in the direction of no. 23.

At The Vic, Alfie and Roxy's continued departure continues to put a strain on the establishment's staff: especially Patrick. As he collects empty glasses from the tables, he suddenly experiences a singular sharp pain in his chest which causes him to drop the glasses on the floor. The pub falls quiet and although Patrick's pain has subsided, he feels embarrassed as he scrambles on the floor to pick up the broken glass, cutting himself in the process. Fatboy insists that Patrick returns home in order to dress his wound although he leaves himself short staffed in the process. Over a period of time, a queue of customers forms at the bar. Fatboy is unable to keep up with the demand of the punters, so therefore is forced to call Tracey to work on her day off. Tracey arrives at the pub and although Fatboy takes this as a sign normal service shall be resumed, Phil walks into the Vic and is visibly displeased to see that Alfie has walked out on the pub at short notice once again - and even more so when he realises Fatboy is in charge!

In the kitchen of no. 23, Kat sits opposite from the young woman she found distressed in the market earlier. The woman clutches a cup of tea to her chest as she introduces herself as Lindsay Poynter, adding that she is nineteen years of age and recently moved out of her home as she disagreed with the lifestyle her mother possessed. Kat listens to Lindsay as she explains that she has always had a troubled relationship with her mother, although she recently decided that she had had enough. Lindsay then tells Kat that she has concerns over how her younger sister is coping in her absence. When Kat asks what happened between Lindsay and her mother to make her leave home, Lindsay closes up and refuses to speak about her life in such detail with a total stranger. However, when Kat asks Lindsay if she has a place to stay - Lindsay breaks down once more. Realising Lindsay's turmoil, Kat reaches into her purse and hands Lindsay some money - telling her to spend a night at the B&B. Kat instructs Lindsay to head upstairs and clean herself up, whilst she makes arrangements in regards to Lindsay's room with Kim. As Lindsay heads up the stairs for a shower, Michael appears. Michael questions why Kat is letting this unknown woman into their home. Kat considers Michael's question, before telling him that Lindsay is her twenty-odd years ago: a lost soul, walking the streets, with the pure ambition of finding somebody who understands her.

Also today, Denise voices her worries to Ian that she believes that Patrick should slow down in his old age. Whitney is thrown in at the deep end when there is a fight in the playground. Lauren takes Max to one of her counselling sessions so he can reassure himself that his daughter is making steady progress, the her cagey behaviour when she spots Jake at the session leads Max to regain suspicions about Lauren.

'EastEnders' actress Melissa Myers on newcomer Lindsay Poynter
Viewers of 'EastEnders' were introduced to the character of Lindsay Poynter in Monday's episode [21st October]. We at Digital Spy catch up with Melissa Myers who plays her.

Hello Melissa. Your character has now made her Albert Square debut! How are you feeling?
I'm very excited but very nervous, I can't wait to hear what everyone has to say about the character. I had to keep her a secret for a long time, so it's nice to be able to tell my friends and family that I am now involved in the institution of EastEnders.

From her first episode alone, it is obvious that Lindsay is quite a troubled character. What is going on with her?
I'm not really allowed to say much on this, really. There's an episode coming up in which Lindsay and Kat sit down once more and Lindsay opens up. All I can say, is that Lindsay's story comes into full swing very soon. I filmed a 'mini episode' for Children in Need on my very first day, which was exciting. Those nine or so minutes are very interesting, it's the start of an exciting chapter for the character.

May we ask as to how long your contract with EastEnders is?
I've signed with the show for six months at a minimum. That's become the norm for us all [new characters]. We do six months to test the grounds, push the boundaries with the character and then at the end we either sign a new [six month contract] or we wrap up our storylines and go. It's brutal but it works! If any new character is unpopular and signs a long contract, it doesn't work.

Are you hopeful you shall stay on the show beyond your initial six months?
Absolutely! Lindsay's plot arc incorporates a lot of characters, there's happy and sad moments throughout. I don't want her to be this anomaly, you know? I don't want her to be there for six months and then leave in a taxi. I have brilliant stuff coming up with Jessie [Wallace] and Adam [Woodyatt] as well. There's also some new characters and actors I have worked with in recent weeks, although they are short term.

Are any plans afoot to introduce Lindsay's mother and sister?
Definitely. I'm not allowed to say much about them until the episodes centred around Lindsay are aired, though. Maybe if you ask me after Halloween, I'll give you a definitive answer!

The character of Kat quickly develops a bond with Lindsay, even revealing she sees herself in her. Do the pair share similar traits?
I think so, yes. Lindsay's character has been perfectly moulded so she fits into how Kat was in the earlier years. Before the viewers met Kat, she was very similar to Lindsay, I've been told. Kat had such a damaged childhood because of Harry, Lindsay's troubles just make Kat look in the mirror and think: ''this girl cannot go down the same path as me''.

Is Lindsay's secret similar to the ''You ain't my muvva'' storyline, then?
Not really, no. Her character is in a very bad way at the moment, she's damaged. Her mother is damaged and this damage will soon be inflicted upon Lindsay's sister. Or so she fears. Lindsay's story is unique, I don't think they've ever done it before in this way.

Tuesday 22nd October 2013
As Kat, Michael and Alice sit around the breakfast table, Kat is quick to recognise the lingering looks shared between Michael and Alice. Suddenly suspicious of the pair, Kat asks Michael to speak to her outside of the kitchen. With the kitchen door separating them from Alice, Kat warns Michael that she is not prepared to see Michael hurt Alice once more. Michael berates Kat for being so judgmental of the situation and he reminds her that he and Alice are both consenting adults so they can do as they please. He then tells Kat that it was only yesterday that Kat let Lindsay - a virtual stranger - into their home and gave her a significant sum of money. Kat refuses to allow Michael to draw a comparison between their situations. Michael insists that Kat's disapproval of his relationship with Alice shall not come between them, just as Alice opens the kitchen door. Having heard the entire conversation despite Kat's hushed tones, Alice reaffirms Michael's claim that the pair are in love. Kat snorts, before grabbing her coat and heading to work.

On the stall, Kat begins to rifle through the new stock. As she places the items onto the clothes rail, a familiar voice peeps up behind her. Kat turns around, feeling a combination of both confusion and anticipation. Stood behind a large bouquet of flowers is a beaming Jean! Kat holds her hands to her mouth as she grins at Jean, before inquiring what Jean is doing back in Walford. Jean gestures to a car parked outside of The Vic and Kat looks over to see Alfie, Roxy and Ollie removing suitcases from the car. Jean explains that Ollie's newly purchased home wasn't completed, so they found themselves living in a hostel and when Alfie and Roxy paid a visit to them on the way home from the airport, it didn't take much persuading for them to return to Walford. Ollie shouts over to Jean, who excuses herself. Kat tells Jean that she will visit them at The Vic at the end of her shift. As Kat's attention returns to the stall, Lindsay makes her presence known behind Kat. Having valued a good night's sleep, Lindsay offers to help Kat on the stall for her kindness towards her yesterday. Hearing laughter from the upstairs window of the pub, Kat glances briefly towards it, before accepting Lindsay's offer.

Inside the pub Alfie and Roxy stand in the kitchen, starting preparations on a meal in honour of Jean and Ollie's return. However, they soon become accustomed to the fact that they are no longer alone in the kitchen. Alfie turns to the door and finds Phil stood there, looking down upon the couple. Phil slams the kitchen door behind him, instructing Alfie and Roxy to sit down. Roxy tries to plead with her cousin but he makes it clear that it shall be him who is doing the talking. With Alfie's encouragement, Roxy sits down beside him. Phil rages at the pair for leaving The Vic in Fatboy's clearly incapable hands whilst they went on another holiday purely because there was 'trouble in paradise'. Roxy tells Phil that they just needed a break, although Phil laughs in her face. He tells his cousin that he fancied a 'break' when his son was sent down for murder and his fiance left him but he didn't take one because he had other priorities. Before Alfie or Roxy can disagree with Phil's claims of negligence, he warns them that if they mess up once more, they're out of The Vic...

Having been released from prison due to lack of evidence last week, Max is keen to settle the score with Carl. However, first Max realises that he must confront Lauren over his fears that she is back on the booze. Lindsay and Kat bond over the stall - although Lindsay soon learns that Kat's relationship with Alfie remains a delicate area. A desperate Janine agrees to rehire Alice.
