Really? I am sick and tired of reading this same statement over and over, each and every time somebody shows compassion or passion for an act.

In some respects X Factor is an entertainment show. But it's also real people, who's lives are turned upside down, dreams made and shattered.

This years bootcamp is absolutely horrific. There's no need for this drama or heartache. None. It's just cruel exploitation.

I do get passionate about the show, I think largely because I'm ridiculously empathetic and compassionate. I can only guess those who come out with statements like "it's only a show" have next to none.

I'm not tuning in next week, because I have this horrible feeling they've invited Melanie back with the intention to shatter her dreams at JH. And I absolutely cannot watch it. I'd probably be a mix of extraordinarily angry and upset.

Ultimately I just wish people would drop the whole only a show BS.

Or perhaps we just save our compassion for things that really matter?

It is only an entertainment show - the producers prove it over and over again with all the little tricks they devise. And the contestants? They know what they're in for so should be well prepared for any disappointments that may 'shatter' their lives. If someone not making it as a pop star is deserving of your compassion - then go ahead - cry for England if you like.

And as for Melanie - the only part I've seen of this series was Nicole's selection of the girls at boot camp (visiting mum and she had a repeat of the show on her TV on Sunday) so this is the first time I'd heard her. I have to say - I thought Melanie is a little overrated. As this is her fourth time on XF - she should really be aware of the show's little twists and turns.

Is getting so worked up about something as trivial as the x-factor a sign of great empathy and sensitivity?

I'm not so sure.

I think you are getting a little overwrought OP. The formula is well known by now, surely no one goes on with any expectation other than being exploited? This is just the modern equivalent of christians being thrown to the lions for the entertainment of the masses.
