Take a look at the first ever live show. It's astonishingly dated - particularly the phones in the break-bumpers.

These are my observations:

The rivalry between judges was played up a lot more
There was an audience vote for the best judge that week(?!)
The set was shaped by a big X - looked highly impractical
The set looked much smaller.
No long rambling warnings about the costs of phone voting
The "mentor" standing with the contestants during judges comments.
The VTs are much shorter
No over the top voice over man
Minimal people on stage when performing - e.g dancers etc.

In addition - the look and feel of the show then is remarkably similar to the look and feel of the Voice today,

It looks so nineties...It could have been an episode of Pop Idol or Popstars Rivals!

It looks so nineties...It could have been an episode of Pop Idol or Popstars Rivals!
Let's not forget both these were in the 00s

The overriding improvement among all of them since then is that we don't have to put up with bloody Kate Thornton any more.

Simon at the end busy reading fans comments on his laptop. Nothing has changed

I agree its very Voice looking.

Oh my god I thought Pop Idol was like 1999
Pop idol aired from late 2001 to early 2002 and again in Autumn 2003.Popstars The Rivals aired in Autumn 2002

I remember reading at the time how the set was the most expensive tv set in history. How true that is I don't know
