RDR HXD890 Switching to standby query
Can someone shed some light as to why my 890 keeps switching itself into standby after it has finished recording. I can't remember it happens during playback but definatly if watching live TV. I've looked though the settings looking for some powersave setting but unable to find anything.
Thanks |

Are you sure it hasn't come out of standby to record and is just going back to this? Only having a single tuner, the only live TV you can watch during this time, through it, is the actual channel being recorded.
If you are saying that you had it turned on already and it started recording, then went into standby afterward, then this shouldn't be happening. |

I'm not 100% sure. I'm sure I took it out of standby to to watch TV, lasted the evening, Seems like there is a sleep time to put it into standby whenever it can after 10 pm

I had a look in the settings and there isn't any option to change this. |

Correction, I set a recording today on my Sony RDR and it switched from the channel I was watching, recorded the programme, switched back to the original channel, then switched itself into standby. So this is normal behaviour.
I had a look in the settings and there isn't any option to change this. However, as it had been 'on' in the first place, as you were watching the tuner's output then perhaps it would revert to the channel you were watching originally and stay on. Hmmmmmmmmmm. |

RDR-HXD890 with Narcolepsy
I've been onto Sony who haven't been much help... I still havent found a way of stopping it going into standby after recording... Had to laff to myself last night after me bringing it out of standby about when I got home to watch the news headlines on BBC News. I used it sucessfully all evening but when it came to record a back to back episode of family guy it switched over to BBC3, recorded, went into standby then immediatly came out of standby to record the second episode and then go back into standby again all without me touching the machine or remote... I used to have a 80 gig non HDMI version years ago and Im sure that behave itself. Could it be recieving a signal from my HDMI TV - Just an idea?
The more I think about it the more I think its a firmware issue. Talking of which is there a generic ISO image of the lastest firmware for an 890? Not one of those unnecessarily complicated Sony images and is really hard to get to work. Thanks in advance |

If it is on when the timer recording starts it ought to stay on afterwards really, but I don't see it as a major problem (if you're watching something you've recorded previously at the point it would go back to standby it stays on). Quote:

The official image is the only one I know of, and I don't know why you think it is complicated - it only has to be written to a blank CD as a file. http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/pro...ds/FW_DVDR_124

This is what I'm thinking is a miss... If I take the recorder out of standby and use it during the evening it should stay on (not go into standby) when it has finished its recording. This is not what is happening - I have to keep bringing it out of standby to continue to use it after it has finished a recording.
As regards to the firmware update (I'm using 1.15). I have downloaded and copied the file to a blank CD-R It just displays the file sr08S124.ram on it. The CD is fialised. As per instruction, I opened the CD tray, and layed the CD in the tray. Pressed the Rec Stop and then Play, the tray closes, displays DISC-DWLD, I can hear the disk spin, before the recorder briefly displaying CLOSE then settling on CD, has anyone any ideas? Thanks in advance |

It's a CD, not a DVD, right? It sounds like it isn't reading or finding the file, possible reasons:As per instruction, I opened the CD tray, and layed the CD in the tray. Make sure you finalise the disc not just the session) * Can't find the directory listing (unlikely; but try DAO rather than TAO mode) It was ages ago when I did mine, but I'm reasonably sure I used an old CD-RW. |

I agree it's not ideal but that's the way it works (even with 1.24).

I remember trying about 4 or 5 different CDs a few months ago, a mix of suggestions, some saying they only got sucess using nero, some saying they just dragged and dropped the file then burnt the file the CD using windows explorer. With such a mix of successful methods it wasn't clear which method was best for me to use. Thanks for your suggestions and assistance all the same |

Just for reference (past and future) I have won an 870 and that does exactly the same thing. Takes control of the tuner, records the program and then goes back into standby/Timer.
I can now see what you have been explaining, the recorder is not designed to be used as the main viewing tuner, it is purely a recorder and used similar to a VHS. An additional tuner (Internal TV or additional External Box) is required for normal viewing. |
