Look on the bright side....it could be Debbie Gibson!

Used to adore Debbie Gibson but then I was 20 back in the day of her big songs.
Remember the 'leather look' for her Electric Youth album

Keicar states that one show was top heavy with late 80's tracks. A big mistake and enough to turn me right off, and I have not bothered for about 5 or 6 weeks now. As Robbie correctly states, this show began very promisingly but has tailed off badly recently, with the presenter shortcomings glaring and far too much twaddle of no interest relating to the shows remit. I've just turned on and haven't heard a record for about 2 minutes now while she rattles on about herself and the school run.

This show isn't about Sara Cox, it is about MUSIC IN THE 1980's, and that is why listeners tune in!”

Do what I do and listen to it on Iplayer. Then you can skip her talking.

Is this show meant to be only for people born AFTER the eighties thus assuming it`s all fresh and new to them? `Cos that`s the only excuse for this dismal programme.

Just caught up with Saturday's show. It's a shame that it was recorded and another DJ didn't cover for Sara, just to see what it would be like with someone different at the helm. I found it quite annoying how Sara seemed to be talking over Chrissie Hynde at the beginning of the interview. I was pleasantly surprised that she chose Move Closer as her track of the 80s and I enjoyed the 12", especially as I recently downloaded it.

So it was recorded. Already falling into the lazy ways of not bothering to show up for a radio programme, and as you say, if she could not be there herself for whatever legitimate reason then why not get a proper live stand in on Saturday evening. Radio 2 should not be resorting to pre-recorded shows at every easy opportunity.

The highlight for me was indeed listening to Chrissie Hynde and in particular my genuine surprise at the record of the 80's she chose from the late Phyllis Nelson. I would not have predicted that for a moment. I bought that single in 1985 and I firmly remember a certain Radio 1 DJ at the time who many here think would be a better host of Sounds Of The 80's actually stating that she loathed Move Closer as a slow dirge! A certain Janice Long.

One of the best things about the 80's is that you never had to listen to Sara Cox

She wasn't live because it was her wedding anniversary. I guess the only time we will get a stand is if Sara is ill or on holiday. If/when this happens I think it will be Zoe Ball will fill in.

I had to stop listening. Couldn't put up with her constant inane drivel in amongst the quality music. Shame but hey ho, there's always Absolute 80s to listen to.

Another 90's ladette? What is it about them that are so apt for an 80's show? Perverse. I'd rather have her father Johnny who was a fond favourite of mine in the early to mid 80's!

I only listened in to this show for a few weeks when it started, as I don't tend to listen to the radio at that time, so I was interested to read this thread to see how it was faring.
Shame it's fading a bit. I just had a look on the web site to check out the music list of songs played last week, and I agree that it's not very inspiring.
Do they bother playing any of the 80s dance tracks like Saturday Love (Cherrelle ft Alexander O'Neal), You're The One For Me (D-Train), Come Into My Life (Joyce Sims), I'll Be Good (Renee and Angela) ?

Signs of madness Al, talking to yourself on the thread. Ooh, dropped an 80's band into my aside there.

Never listened tonight, but have just glanced the playlist on the Radio 2 website. Stand out singles for me are Robert Plant's Big Log which I bought in August 1983, and Star by Kiki Dee, as well as Hall & Oates. But the otherwise generally 80's songs are standard predictable fare and picking a host of very obvious singles much of the time. Because of this I don't find it a must listen anymore. Plus far too much irrelevant faux "me, me, me" banter I can do without. More 80's anecdotes instead should be the form for this show. Isn't that what it's about after all?

9 tracks an hour for a specialist music show is appalling.
Far too much waffle from Cox.

I think both Sara and "producer Gary" need to be dropped. You don't get Brian and Johnny waffling on about random rubbish on their "Sounds" programmes. I don't listen to Sounds of the 60s/70s often but they don't keep playing the same generic songs do they? I personally blame "Producer Gary" for the songs that get picked. Does Sara actually get a say in what gets played?

I just checked out the playlists from the last 6 shows to see if I was missing anything as that time on a Saturday isn't the time for me to be listening and I was just shocked at how dire at least 90% of the songs were. For a specialist music show on Radio 2 whoever puts this together ought to be ashamed for such boring, lazy, predictable and overplayed drivel! If this was a commercial station I wouldn't expect any more, but for a BBC show it really stood out how unimaginative and bland the songs are. I really haven't missed anything I can't hear elsewhere (for the majority of songs daily) sadly. A real missed opportunity

Unsure about that, but Sounds Of The 80's is being dropped from its Saturday night slot in the near future, and I believe being moved to Wednesday evening instead.

The plan is to have Sounds Of The 60's on Monday night, Sounds Of The 70's on Tuesday night, and Sounds Of The 80's on Wednesday night in some kind of co-ordinated sequence, from October.

It's not being dropped from Saturdays, neither are the rest. They will be repeated overnight in October.
