OK. The article I read gave entirely the wrong impression and was mis-leading then. Thanks for clarifying, although I'm disgusted that radio is now going down the route that TV has been doing, in repeating shows a second time a day or two later at a late hour. Quite inexcusable on the most listened to radio station in Britain.

She is certainly a much better host in a generic daytime show rather than a specialist music show. She's been good filling in for Chris Evans over the last few days.

Cant see the point of repeating SOTE when people have Iplayer.

If they cannot afford to broadcast 24 hours a day then go back to having a closedown then, simple as that. Apparently Radio 2 is the longest continuous broadcasting radio station in the world, having last "closed down" for the night at 2.02am on Saturday 27th January 1979.

CELT1987 is absolutely correct, that with iPlayer available on demand there are no excuses or need to repeat previously broadcast live radio programmes.

Or if they have to broadcast archive content instead. At least that will be something worth listening to at low cost.

Meanwhile all these TV personality types they have brought to Radio 2 will be getting over inflated six figure salaries because of their enhanced TV profiles, as opposed to genuine radio presenters who likely get a lot less for their trouble.

If Sounds Of The 80's is still to originally air on Saturday night, then why the hell should exactly the same show be broadcast 4 days later on Wednesday night? Whether this will be the case remains to be seen, despite what poster Occy has stated.

I wonder how much could be saved by trimming back some of the sidekicks on say Evans' or Mayo's shows? Do these 2 shows really need at least 6 people between them, excluding the travel women?!?

There could be plenty of money saved at weekends as well

I like quite a few songs from the 80s as follows:

1: Roland Rat Superstar - Rat Rapping
2: Kenny Everett - Snot Rap
3: Keith Mitchell - Captain Beaky
4: The Brat - Chalk Dust
5: The Mobiles - Drowning In Berlin
6: The Piranhas - Zambeze + Tom Hark
7: The Look - I Am The Beat
8: Will Powers - Kissing With Confidence
9: Kissing The Pink - The Last Film

There are more but the thing is I am not sure how radio stations/broadcasters get their music as now and again you hear a track and think I know that and remember it and have not heard it played before, but some of the above were not on ITunes but some not all have since been included.

There is the issue obviously of deleted songs but I agree it would be nice to hear variety as otherwise it becomes just like a disco at the pub on a Saturday night and some are repetitive, if it really is just like something commercial radio would do then I say that Radio 2 really need a long think about including different tracks as otherwise listeners will drop.

It would be nice for just once a programme or station to keep to its word and really play more variety and not the same old, same old.

It's not in any doubt. The BBC's own statement says:

"On weekday early mornings from 3am to 5am, Radio 2 will be repeating some of the network’s best-loved programmes. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights will broadcast Sounds Of The 60s with Brian Matthew, Sounds Of The 70s with Johnnie Walker and Sounds Of The 80s with Sara Cox. "

Note the use of the word 'repeating'. Then again, note the use of 'best-loved'.

It is of course a scandal and an outrage that Alex Lester's superb overnight show is being shunted off for a repeat of a programme that is barely worth hearing once.

You are kidding right? All the Sounds Of.... shows are certainly worth the airtime. Yes repeating them is a cop out and I'm in the brigade that thinks Vanessa should have been dumped rather than Alex. The repeats could have easily been run from midnight to 2am then Janice at 2am and Alex at 4am

Yes 'I Am The Beat' is a blast from the past. I have rarely heard it since. It reminds me of getting ready for school in the mornings, and the song ringing out from Mike Read's radio 1 breakfast show. I think it was a hit at the beginning of 1981.

In that case where is Pick Of The Pops two hour repeat slot?

"Best loved" to describe a Sara Cox show that began only late last year is taking a liberty. It was good at the start but the past few months has seen the general all round quality dip.

Can't agree. It's the same now as it was when it started - some good songs, some not so good. ones, depending on your taste. Having heard last week's offering I thought there were some pretty decent tracks in there, certainly well above other editions that I happened to catch thanks to less synth-heavy tracks although I like the famous Depeche Mode one The Style Council song (Long Hot Summer) was brilliant.

If you don't like Sara Cox's 'DJ' patter that's another issue but you know what to expect from her..

If only.....

Curiosity had Killed The Cat in 1987.

Good reminder of how awful they were tonight.

When "The Cat" had finally been killed, there was an appalling cover, that I heard recently again on POTP, of Johnny Bristol's Hang On In There Baby for just Curiosity, but that was the early 90's.

I actually don't mind them. Down to Earth and Misfit were good songs.

Here we are listening to a show about the 80's, but having to put up with chatter about Robbie Williams at the o2 where he apparently was tonight. Who cares, this is the 1980's for 2 hours, remember. I just don't feel this inane blathering on about nothing in particular is suitable for a late evening radio show. The show needs to "lean up" and focus properly on what the show is about, and that includes the chinwagging between the tracks being much more relevant. Johnny Walker manages it on the 70's equivalent.

You may just have solved Bob Shennan's dilemma about what to fill one of the two remaining slots with!

No problem with the 60s and 70s shows but the 80s show doesn't work. None of them should be repeated. If Bob Shennan wants Sara Cox on Radio Two, fair enough, but give her a straight up-and-down show instead and leave this to one of the many presenters better suited to it.

Bet they can't afford Tony's repeat fee for POTP ahoymeister!

They will no doubt dress up the October changes as something very positive, when anyone knows the truth will be completely the reverse. Of all the radio stations in the UK, never mind just the nationals, you'd think it was considered paramount to at least have live, friendly overnight broadcasting on this kind of BBC network. Radio at night can be vastly important to many people.

Meanwhile this week on the BBC red button in the early evening they had some totally pointless waste of time and money called G in the Park, which consisted of Greg James and a faked up festival set that you could watch on TV simulcast with the actual radio broadcast. A frivolous waste of money by the look of it.

Agreed. And I even turned up my jeans and wore a beret in late 1987 because of Ben Volpierre-Whatshisname

What's happening to 'The Dark Lord' Alex Lester then? I've not listened to his show but surely the night listeners deserve some live radio and not just repeats?

There will still be live night time radio from midnight to 3am.
Janice Long will do Monday to Thursday with Alex doing Friday to Sunday.
