Haven't listened for weeks, thought I'd catch the Live Aid special, but watching Coxy reminds me of how devoid she is of 80s memories and shows little actual empathy for the decade.

The BBC still has people on its books who were actually there who could have made a far better job of the program. Pi$$ poor.

I have to agree. I'm the same age as Sarah, but see the short comings in her knowledge.
When listening I often think, "it wasn't like that" or "why don't you know".

Someone like Bruno Brookes would be ideal. Some resung 80s Radio 1 jingles would be the icing on the cake to the sound of the show.

Agree, Brookes or Mark Goodier would have been a better host. I've stopped listening to the show as I cannot stand Sara Cox.

I was thinking Janice Long who was there on the day and is still a R2 jock.

Sara Cox's appointment for this program is so wrong, bad choice by the BBC, missed opportunity and an insult to those who actually remember the 1980s and were 'there'

SOT 50s - Leo Green, dad Benny 50s saxophonist, ex radio presenter, makes sense
SOT 60s - Brian Matthews BBC jock from the 50s/60s, makes sense
SOT 70s - Johnny Walker 1970s Radio 1 Jock, makes sense
SOT 80s - Sara Cox, umm late 90s chavette and R1 Jock, makes no sense....

You know you're getting old when you admit you listen to Radio 2.
When one finds their first grey hair.. THAT'S when one's accepted as a R2 listener !

As for SOT80s.. Sara Cox is bloody awful presenting it. She sounds like she's 'hosting' a hospital radio show for the first time, without any experience or training.

Ideally it should be someone in their mid to late forties presenting.

Sara is 41 so not that much younger. She would still remember most of the 80's just because she wasn't old enough to go to gigs or work in the 80s doesn't mean she can't appreciate the music.

Yes, I get that, but it's already been pointed out that her knowledge about the decade is somewhat questionable.

Shes a terrible presenter for SOTE. Her ramblings really put me off. She also doesn't do enough research.

Absolutely. I've thought since day one that Janice Long would be a much better presenter for this. I gave up on it a while back after one Sara Cox incoherent mumbling too many.

Disagree, no one younger than 50. Pat Sharp, I think was the youngest DJ at 20 when he started at Radio 1 in 1982, so that makes him 53 and would fit in ideally with the age demographic for SOTE.

If the Saturday night 'party feel' must remain, he would be a good choice, also maybe Gary Davies, Cox is a no no, too young, too gobby and too 80's illiterate.

Pat Sharp is too naff to present a show like SOTE. This isn't All 80s on commercial radio. And I don't agree that they have to be 50 and over. They don't necessarily have to been a DJ back then either.

...But not as naff as Sara Cox and neither is she 'all 80's' on her other shows.

Disagree with not having to be a DJ, would rather listen to someone like Janice Long telling us how Live Aid actually was, rather than Coxy reading the facts from Wikipedia....

What's the obsession with DJs having to have been on Radio 1 in the 80s? I don't care who they are or where they're from as long as they have a knowledge of the decade. And they're age appropriate.

Because they are nationally known 'names', even better if they're associated with the decade. Radio One was a different institution to what it is today. Dave Doubledex from Radio Devon, wouldn't quite fit the bill....

I don't know who you mean exactly, but if it's Brookes, Goodier, Davies etc forget it.

I'm sure Sara would of watched live aid she would of been 11 I watched every minute of it from start to finish and I'm a similar age.

As I imagine she listened to the top 40 every Sunday and watched top of the pops every week just like everyone else our age.

People are making it sound like she wasn't around at all in the 80s or doesn't have any first hand knowledge ?

I get your point, but for me personally, you have to be able to remember the whole decade to talk about it. I doubt someone who was six in 1980 would.

Sorry to go on but I brought my first record at the age of 6 it was another brick in the wall I can remember the early 80s as much as the late 80s. I was a huge music fan from that young.

Yes. But Sara Cox proves not everyone does. Huge difference to being 12 in 1980, as I was.

Don't forget Sounds of the 80's is often simulcast on the BBC Red Button.

Therefore the presenter has also got to be fairly presentable on TV as well as a competent radio presenter.

I think that's why Sara was chosen

Big Bang by Fuzzbox is this week's featured album. Good interview at the moment with Vicky and Maggie. hope they play some stuff off it other than just the singles. Jamaican Sunrise was my favourite track on it.

Big Bang was the album I bought with my first ever pay packet in August 1989 at the same time as Anywayawanna by The Beatmasters

Hardly a classic, a pretty unmemorable album from the runt end on the 80's!
