Kylie - Step Back in Time (used just a minute ago on Sara's link) came out in 1990. But I'll let them get away with it as it sounds very 80s!

Thanks. She was just a name that popped into my head without really trying too hard to think of anyone. Often how to get the best answer!

Regards the Radio 2 demographic, it is hard to tell exactly who Radio 2 is meant to appeal to, but I see that as a strength, not a weakness and if it's 11 to 95 then so be it. Far too much trying to focus on a very select age range and kind of listener nowadays elsewhere.
I don't think it is meant to be 11-95 but just as R1 has decided it has to get more youthful - no one above 24 - a recent professional study by psychologists has indicated that childhood should now be considered as being up to 30.
So they are in a pickle.

At the other end, R2 are studying that Age UK station with interest. Is it plausible to play Paranoid by Black Sabbath and follow it with advice on stair lifts? That kind of question. Currently they are playing ultra safe with brass bands and Friday Night is Music Night.

Well for those people who insist that a decade begins not on the "0" but the "1" then they presumably think the 80's began in 1981 and ended in 1990, so you could be in there!

I think we focus too much attention to a general age thing brushing across all people, many for whom it does not fit. Just because you are a certain number does not mean you should be slotted into a certain box.

Bit of a predictable Whitney hit to play (I Wanna Dance With Somebody) which immediately made me think of Absolute 80's for some reason, even though I haven't listened to that station in 2 years at least.

Regarding the interview with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, Sara Cox is mentioning "the electronic keyboard player & the soulful singer" being first. However I watched Synth Britannia last night and another pop duo who could be described exactly the same came along with big hits nearly a year before Eurythmics....and that is Yazoo.

Scary is not an understatement, ... Christ that makes time seem short. I do wonder if too much looking back and nostalgia like this is not great for ones mental health, combined with watching TOTP 1978 weekly too. It all makes the present seem totally inadequate.

.
I agree, I've been listening to this and also have been listening to a lot of Absoulte 80s over the last few months and its making me feel a bit depressed and stuck in the mud. Especially when I heard Two Tribes the other week for the first time in ages and realised it was nearly 30 years ago.

Going a bit fantasy schedule...

Sat 6pm Sounds of 80s with Janice Long
Sat 8pm Sounds of 90s with Sara Cox
Sat 10pm Dave Pearce Dance Years

Liza Tarbuck takes over 12-2 Sunday into Monday from Janice Long. Paul Gambaccini moves to Jo Whiley's slot on a Thursday.

Think that sorts it nicely

Kim Wilde. Very well done. Cautiously I endorse. Please arrange.

I think the programme will be back and forth before settling, sort of.

Sort of because R2 execs haven't quite decided yet how to cater for their 11-95 age demographic.
And to keep themselves employed, they never will.
That age range is quite wide range of tastes to cater for by one national radio station , lately 35 year plus are getting catered for quite a lot more .

Paul Gambaccini is perfect for a Saturday evening. No need to move him.

And the 90s is far too recent to form the basis of an entire Radio 2 programme.

If were talking fantasy schedule:

Sundays;
1.00pm Sounds of the 60's with Brian Matthew
3.00 Sounds of the 70's with Johnnie Walker
5.00 Sounds of the 80's with Sara Cox.

Put Danny Baker on Saturday Morning from 8-10am & axe Elaine Paige.

i fear a 60's/70's/80's combo all on a saturday afternoon will be too much for some people! id be ok with it, but im pretty sure there will be others, and a vast majority, who wont be.

and id ditch graham norton for danny baker, and find someone else for 8-10am, steve wright maybe? *gets my coat*

The only thing in Radio 2's Saturday schedule that needs sorting is getting rid of Aneka Rice as she's just dreadful and also ditching Dermot. As said before he hardly is ever there to do a live show so give it to someone that doesn't have the TV work that keeps him away so much.

I agree with you about Dermot O'Leary. I absolutely never continue listening after POTP finishes at 3pm Saturday. I bet listening dips significantly at that time. He seems so out of place on Radio 2, as an ITV presenter of a tiresome pretend music show later on Saturday, and knowing full well he isn't even live anyway.

Sara Cox presenting Never Mind The Buzzcocks on BBC2 right now.

Dermot's show in a touch of 6 Music on Radio 2 and I think it sticks out like a sore thumb.

How about having an extra hour on POTP till 4pm then have Liza on at 4pm and move Sara Cox to 6pm and then we can have Dave Pearce back at 10pm

So far, two weeks in, Sounds of the 80's is a great listen, just on too late.

Yes I was very disappointed when Zoe left her Saturday slot. I enjoyed her chats with Andrew Collins. I always feel Anneka Rice is looking down her nose at people. So now on a Saturday morning I listen to Pat Sharp on Smooth....... Oh no he's gone. Oh I know I'll listen to smooth 70's great........ oh s**t that's gone as well. I give up!

ditch Dermot oDreary for Craig Charles (possibly not him as his 6M show starts at 6) but someone a bit more worthy of a sturday afternoon slot, not someone who sends you to sleep cuz all he does is whisper down the mic.

but love sounds of the 80's btw, thats why we are in this thread....

enjoying the show but finding it annoying that Sara is obviously reading the artist info ... needs to get a bit more conversational.
Also think the classic album would be better as 2 slightly less known tracks and one that charted ... just to give a bit of an edge

The problem with Dermot O'Leary on radio is his presentation style. He's quite simply boring. He just has no way of engaging the listener at all, and as you say it's even more noticeable as he comes on straight after Tony Blackburn, who of course is a master of his craft. Dermot O'Leary just doesn't "get" radio presentation, and what's needed to do an entertaining show.

The music on Sounds of the 80's is mostly good, however Sara Cox is the wrong choice of dj, hopefully she will be replaced by Annie Nightingale who unlike Sara Cox does have experience of being on the radio in the 1980's

That's not going to happen for many years. I think it'll be well into the 2020's before Radio 2 even consider a Sounds of the 90's show.

In any case, Dave Pearce's Dance Anthems was more or less that show anyway.

Tonight's Sounds Of The 80's will be speaking to Lisa Stansfield, who only had her debut solo hit single in the last few weeks of the 1980's, and also Toni Basil who had the one hit wonder with Mickey back in early 1982.
