Big Brother helps C4 beat the January blues
Omah
02-02-2005
From MediaGuardian :

"The biggest factor in Channel 4's success last month was Celebrity Big Brother, despite initial criticism of the quality of the celebrity contestants - and the fact that this series attracted lower ratings overall than the previous run of Celebrity Big Brother in November 2002.
Overall, the third series of Celebrity Big Brother averaged 4 million viewers, with a high of 5.4 million for the final night, when Happy Monday Bez emerged as the unlikely winner.

Celebrity Big Brother helped C4 to its first monthly ratings win over BBC2 since July last year, when the last series of Big Brother was on air."

That is what sadly is so hit and miss about BB - the contestents!
It really doesn't matter if they are superstars, zzzz list or nobodies; it's a matter of do they work together as a group to provide entertainment? (whether that is arguing, laughing or crying their eyes out)

I think this set of "celebs" worked - Not too sure why, but they just did.

This is what they simply HAVE TO get right with BB6 or it's 10 weeks of Sh*t.

It's a shame that as it worked so well, they couldn't have extended CBB3 to 10 weeks - Far better than ending up with another BB4

Is that 'celeb' all the time and only 'legend' at lunchtime? - oh to have that level of self-belief **sighs**...but the kissy-lippy stains on the mirror must be a bugger to shift

That's true.

And it's why all the talk of gimmicks and themes is pointless, the only thing that matters is getting the mix right. No amount of gimmicks will save the show if we have a houseful of bores or freaks again.

Also why I don't really like the hundreds of 'never heard of them' threads that we get before every 'celeb' show. ( Although i do join in.......... )

The 'list' that celebs belong to is no indicator of how entertaining or interesting they might be in the context of BB or 'I'm A Celeb'

Ahhhhhh, BUT, swing...gimmicks and themes CAN very much enhance 'the right mix'...

Bizarrely, although i sometimes (mainly courtesy of DS:BB ummmmmm, persuasion...in it's mildest form of course) buy into the "endemol edit/fix the winner...endemol create advance storylines...endemol dabble in witchcraft and bloody sacrificial altars" [ok, no-one has posted the last, yet ], i'm usually left thinking that, at least in the early days of each BB, BB don't themselves know whether they've suceeded in co-habitting the 'right mix'.

All the focus-groups in the world may prove worthless when those doors close. Funnily enough, i think BB are more aware of that than we give them credit for.

Perhaps not quite a lucky-dip but no sure-fire either. If that's the case then fore-thought over additional whistles and bells makes a lot of sense...it may work or it may not but we'd probably damn them if they didn't try the add-ons, irregardless of the HM grouping they gifted us.

I agree that the right mix is a 'hit and miss' thing and they obviously don't deliberately pick what could turn into a poor mix.

But the themes, gimmicks, tasks only work for me if I'm enjoying the HMs.

They can't rescue a poor show with gimmicks
