Watched the six episodes last night. I enjoyed the animated bits, like an updated version of Noggin the Nog

And, I wasn't expecting these two lines of dialogue:

Varga "Are you local?"

and..

Clent "Computer says No"

I have no idea if the League of Gentlemen or Walliams deliberately reference those lines, or whether it's a coincidence.

Btw, I could have sworn Varga and his sargeant high-five each other after they shoot Stoor, though they could just be bumping around.

No points for humming Last of the Summer Wine when Penley is on screen, either.

Loved the incidental music, and the Warriors themselves..

And what on earth is the point of Victoria? Squealing loudly in an avalanche zone made me wish she'd get wiped out. You'd think there was 3 years between Victoria and Fay Wrey, not 30+.

The point of Victoria was to scream, of course

It's part of the selection criteria of old school companions that they be able to scream well. In fact, I think Deborah Watling was nicknamed "leather lungs" because she was so good at it

It came in handy in one story, her screaming killed the seaweed creatures that were attacking the base as they were susceptible to sound!

I saw the Ice Warriors quite recently, actually, as I've been working my way through from the beginning (just started on Pertwee last week).

I thought the animation was very good. You don't normally think about it but it must be quite tough to try to synch a soundtrack full of random bumps and noises to an animation when you don't have a clue what the noises actually represent

Well, and to be pretty whilst doing it.

I felt the Ice Warriors went on a bit. Seeds of Death is much, much better.

The music is GREAT!

I've always felt Victoria is a bit rubbish. I was so excited to see her for the first time, as she always interested me in the Target books, but she's very squeaky and feeble. Also, I think Debbie Watling isn't much of an actor.

5/10 for The Ice Warriors, from me.

How have they managed to get a real, live bear into the studio, but still make it look like stock footage? That takes some sort of skill. Mrs Chuff and I were stunned when the DVD commentary told is it was actually in the studio with them, rather than cut from a 1950s nature docco.

I remember seeing this as a nipper (about 7 years old). Those Ice Warriors scared the pants off me!! I'd love to see it again - but I'm afraid I don't like these animated inserts! I prefer to see the whole thing as it was originally seen. (I'm fussy like that!)
I've still got 'The Seeds of Doom' anyway

Oh yes, the bear cub. It didn't look very dangerous did it?

Oh, and when the Dr shoves his way into shot on the 'vid link' I laughed because it reminded me of askhodgetwins jostling around on YouTube.

I've resisted any attempts to get 'all my streams into one stream' in terms of online media, but I have accidentally combined all my memes into one meme instead..

(disclaimer; askhodgetwins is NSFW, and definitely not for under-18s. Thought I'd better add that).

I'm embarrassed to say that it wasn't until the commentary mentioned it that i realised it was a baby bear

To be honest I find myself turning off all critical faculties while watching these old ones. I just enjoy the nostalgia of them and the curiosity of old style TV.

It actually wasn't until the War Games when I found myself thinking, "I'm really enjoying this" from a piece of drama perspective.

That's the sense I enjoyed it in too. It's not like you can take the computer vs human, or science vs intuition theme on the same level now.

But seeing this has encouraged me to seek out Tomb of the Cybermen, and I'll probably pick up some other titles from time to time.

As a general principle, I'm in favour of the animated reconstructions, which seem to be the best way forward until all those missing episodes are finally returned to the BBC (still looking forward to the big announcement on 31/11/13).

However, I found myself rather disliking the animations on this particular DVD. The arm movements in particular look very unnatural, more like cut-out cardboard puppets jointed with pins at shoulders and elbows, and the cursory treatment of the complex textures of the Ice Warriors armour increases the general sense of flatness. I much preferred the animations for The Reign of Terror, despite some misgivings about the choice of shots.

Got Frazer Hines to sign my DVD of this at Regenerations a few weeks ago. Meant to get Deb Watling to sign it to but she'd gone to the toilet and I was pushed for time.

Thanks for this - never heard of askhodgetwins before but have now spent a happy hour with such gems as
"Girlfriend Caught Me Pleasing Myself to Hentai Anime Porn"
"Saw Friend's Sister On Amateur Porn Website"
"Should I Have Sex With My Friend's Mom???????"
"Sex with Stepsister Ok???"
"Dad's New Wife Has Hot Daughter That I Want!!!"

I'm sure Troughton would have been proud to be compared with works of that calibre.

Zoe replacing Victoria was a blessed relief! Wendy Padbury could act, poor old Deborah Watling was so wooden!

Askhodgetwins. Good Lord above. Watched a minute of one of their films. Blimey.

"Girlfriend says I have a deformed mushroomtip" is a great title though.

I find their schtick very funny at the right time (eg. just back from the pub, and a little night-cap before bed while browsing YT).

Only a minute? You and I obviously have very different tastes in humour

If you were to only watch one I'd recommend "Sex with Stepsister Ok???"

Hang on, is Watling in TOTCM? I may need to mute her dialogue/wailing.

She is, although she is bearable in that one. It's a bona-fide classic!

That is exactly what I thought as soon as I began watching part 2 of this DVD. It's a real shame in a way, because in many other ways the animation is very well done. Camera angles, motion/perspective, facial expressions...they've paid a lot of attention to these things and it shows, but as soon as someone moves their arm...yuck, the illusion is somewhat spoiled and my mind is distracted from the drama. However, we all learn from our mistakes, and when this team of illustrators fix this weak point in their system, I'm sure they'll move on to greatness!

Another slight disappointment with this DVD (although it's no-one's fault....well, apart from the BBC for junking the videotapes in the first place!) is that I had hoped that better quality film prints than those used for the VHS release would be available. (for example, I've heard that the 'Krotons' DVD is far superior to previous releases/transmissions, in this regard) - but alas, it seems that these blurry 2nd or 3rd generation film prints of 'Ice Warriors' must be the only surviving source material, in this instance. So, if you haven't yet bought this DVD, be aware that although they've cleaned up the prints, and corrected the geometric 'wobble' which affected part 4 or 5, the image quality (detail? sharpness?) is still less than ideal.

Watched 'Tomb..'

Watling did less squealing, and I must admit she was more shapely in this episode.

Like ferrets in a sack, as it were.
