've just re signed to Netflix after a year away from it because of the forthcoming launch on Virgin Media. Ive been reading about the 3D movies but having browsed the movies and after trying the search function,I cannot find any 3D movies. What's the best way to access them?

They are only available on selected devices (mainly 3D TV with Smart Functions but also some 3D compatible set top boxes) and not through the web interface.

Additionally they may not be available on any region other than the US one unless that's changed in the last few days

None of those are 3D ready (The roku could in theory if connected to a 3D tv as it only needs to show a SBS image but doesnt atm)

And I believe what you are refering to was the announcement that Super HD was now available to all users no matter the ISP they use (Before it was limited to specific ISP's who had joined Netflix delivery program). This announcement made a passing reference to 3D but also mentioned it was US only

Its it ready as its a software limitation. The channel you mention supports 3D at a software level but The Netflix Roku channel doesn't support 3D and unless they upgrade it it won't. Seeing as they have only rolled 3D apps out for the PS3 and LG's 3D TV's I'm not sure they will roll out an update for the channel anytime soon

Still only a 3d demo which didn't work on my telly which as I said before is 3d. Tweeted Netflix but nothing back. They seem to only reply when they can reply in the positive.

I've only seen 3D movies when using the US site. They do play properly through the netflix app though. I have a 2013 LG Smart TV. I haven't seen any 3d content on the UK site

Just tried this out. When I selected the 3D option it said this title is not available for streaming.

Just got a 3D TV and might join Netflix if there are any decent 3D films on there.

Have things improved since this thread was made, or have Netflix reduced or withdrawn from the 3D market like many others have?

Thanks.

Apparently Netflix UK doesn't have any 3D content at all. I've had a 3D television for a few years now and i could probably count on one hand the number of 3D films i've actually watched on it in the last 12 months.

3D TV has not really taken off like they had hoped it would and some shops are no longer selling 3D TVs.
HD and the newer 4k(UHD) is the way forward for TV viewing.

Sky Movies or blu-ray are the main options.

Home, San Andreas, Mad Max and Terminator Genysis are recent releases on Sky.

There may be a decline in 3D tech on Full HD/HD Ready TV's, but there are actually more 4k tv's with 3D than without.

3D was ok on Full HD, but 3D on 4k, although upscaled, is so much better. There's a provision for 4k 3D in the 4k UHD Bluray spec, I think they will test the water with the new format, still 3D with glasses but I can see a small revival coming on, might even show up on Netflix.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Is the 3D Sky Movies service a linear or On Demand service?

I've just asked Now TV if they have any 3D content and the answer was no.

I don't have Sky just BT TV with Youview and Netflix but I did read somewhere that Sky closed there 3D channel and moved there 3D stuff to Sky on demand only.

WOW, sweeping statement, I'd better check my 4k UHD OLED TV then, because that did have 3D

3D never took off; people who didn't normally wear glasses generally found it more uncomfortable than it was worth for a limited 3D effect, and people who already wore glasses had additional problems.

Whilst TVs which are 3D compatible will no doubt sell in ever higher numbers (all they require is a 120+hz refresh rate screen plus some associated protocols for connected specs), VR headsets are likely to be where 3D goes and stays from this year onwards.

If you want fully immersive 3D, you will never get that from a large TV sitting in the room and wearing special glasses to watch it. Instead you need a dedicated headset which is designed to be comfortable to wear for extended periods and which provides a genuine separate high-quality display for each eye.

You're talking active not passive. None of those problems with LG's Cinema 3D TV's.

And Sky's 1080i 3D is even better upscaled on a UHD TV.

as well as 3d movies there are a handful of nature documentary boxsets on Sky in 3d. They used to have some Sky Arts pieces in 3d (Isle of Wight Festival, Ballet, Cirque du Soleil) but I don't think they're available any more.

Sadly I think Sky have completely stopped producing any 3d programmes, but there is still a steady stream of Hollywood movies available in 3d that they're showing.

(Personally I love 3d, and always choose it at home or at the cinema if the option is there. Passive display so no eye strain, and also great for gaming! VR will get there but it will be very very niche for a few years yet)
