I've been going to the job centre since late August, and I haven't been put on a mandatory work programme yet so I wouldn't worry about that yet.
Generally, you're told to apply for a certain amount of jobs per week, make a record of it, and then sign on every 2 weeks. Signing on doesn't take any longer than 5 minutes, usually. Also every few weeks you have to see an advisor. I'm always told that appointments may last up to an hour, but I haven't had one last past 15 minutes yet. I wouldn't say the jobcentre is helpful in terms of finding employment, but they're not the tyrants that they're sometimes said to be. I suppose it depends on where you go, though. so will they ask me if i want to join a work program can I just turn it down and say that I am looking for work myself and that i can apply myself without the help of JC or work program are JC advsiors nice or sometimes rude to people as not looking forward to my appointment as dont want to end up working in some shop and force to work in work program agianst my will |

I have a question..or two..
After reading your post i was wondering does the Job Center force you onto JSA? Can you say no? Will that mean anything if i say no? The Job Centre and JSA go hand in hand. Why are you at the Job Centre if you are not claiming JSA and other benefits? You`re entitled to them (usually, they are age and other criteria) but you don`t have to have them. JSA is just a commitment to find work--go to interviews, assessment days etc. You go to their interviews and that`s it. Once you have been claiming for a while, then you need to `do as you`re told`.. |

in order to get JSA is it mandaorty to be on one of the work program and work for shops etc and take jobs no one else would and going to expect jc adviser to be bad to me and shouting and all that
not looking forward to it dont know why i need to sign on in the first place as hear so many stories of JC advisors being bad to people dont want that If you do get sent then yes, you have no choice or you lose benefits. I would say it is very unlikely you'll be sent on one of those programmes straight away, so it's really not worth worrying about to be honest. But just be aware that you CAN be referred right away if they feel you would benefit. |

so if i go into a job centre and see an advisor can I say i just want to claim JSA providing that all i want to do is apply for jobs myself and provide that i fill in form stating that i am looking for work and that is all

It could be a year away. You don't get asked if you want to join, when they do decide to send you you have no choice, you cannot refuse or you lose your benefits. If you are generally pleasant to the JC staff they are generally fine to you, just follow the rules, retain evidence of your job search and any applications you have made, and take it with you each time you sign on. In every profession you get arseholes, and people who have a bad day and take it out on others. Just don't rise to it if you do happen to come across such a pratt, as long as you do what is asked and follow the rules you will be fine. |

The Work Programme is generally for those who have been unemployed a certain length of time. You CAN be referred straight away, but that is unlikely if your adviser feels you are prepared to engage with them and actively seek work, follow the rules etc. If they think you need extra help then yes, you can be referred to one of those programmes earlier but generally it will be months before you get sent there.

Digital spy is slightly biased when it comes to opinions on the job centre. According to some on here it's worse than a Nazi prisoner of war camp.
When I signed on I was told that for the first 12 weeks, as long as I could show that I was looking for work, I would be left to my own devices. After 12 weeks I would have been expected to broaden my horizons work wise, and apply for any jobs that the advisor found for me. It's only after 6 Months + they start to introduce workfare and mandatory courses to help you gain employment. |

can i just claim and keep applying online and thats it So far my advisor has been quite decent. She sent me to someone to look at my CV who suggested improvements and now I am doing a computer course to brush up my skills. My advice is take advantage of any free courses they offer you. They will not find you a job though, you'll have to do that yourself. My advisor is being OK with me at the moment as I've managed to get a few interviews. No job offers yet but I live in hope. |

can i just claim and keep applying online and thats it At some stage, perhaps 12 months from now, if you are still unemployed you WILL be sent on one of those programmes, most likely the Work Programme. Again, you CANNOT refuse. If you do so you will be sanctioned, how long that sanction lasts depends on you, your attitude and whether you are then willing to undertake the Work Programme. If you continually refuse you can lose benefits for 3 years. But you are worrying unnecessarily, there's no need to worry about it until it happens. |

No, you have to provide evidence. It can be just printouts of the jobs you have applied for, or on some websites you can view a list of all jobs you have applied for in a given week or two weeks, just print that out and take it with you.
But again, you seem to think you have a choice if and when you go on something like the Work Programme, you don't. also can i say that i have work coming up like working for royal mail or volunteering at citizens advice also why is it so complicated all i want is to claim JSA why cant they just give me the money this is why i dont want to claim the entire system is complicated and dont make things simple |

thanks but again still worried as u get JC advisors who see people who may think benefit or reccommend that u go on the work program and end up working in a shop or some out of town place or somewhere i hate
can I just say look i am applying online everyday to jobs and get result everytime i apply and also got some work myself lined up already like working for royal mail or voluntterng at cizitens advice etc If however, the work is volunteering then you can only volunteer for up to 15 hours a week. 16 hours or more and they will class you as not having enough time to jobsearch, and you lose benefits normally. However, that is something to discuss with your adviser as they can sometimes allow some leeway. Likewise if you find a part time job of 16 hours a week or more you will also lose JSA too, but you may still qualify for some help with Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. Your Job Centre adviser can give you information on all of that, and can even do what's called a Better of in Work Calculation, where they will work out such things and if you would be better off in part time work or not. Ask them when you go. |

In 99% of cases yes, but you actually can be referred much earlier, the rules allow it and I know of one person personally who was referred to MWA two weeks after first signing on. It's not normally the case, but it can happen.

every time i apply online i get email confirmation hence why i apply online every day that 100 forms to print out is there a way of doing it electronically or such
The main ones I use allow you to view a summary list of all jobs applied for in the last week, or two weeks. If the site(s) you use allow that then you can just print off that summary sheet instead. |

I think you are worrying to much over it and jumping the gun a bit
Your first interview will be to set out what you are going to do to look for work (what you are doing) After this you will sign on every 2 weeks and show proof you have done this (also see an advisor every so often to look for work) This will most probably go on like this for 12 months (if you show them you are capable yourself) Nothing much to it here, apply for jobs, show you have and then walk away After this time if you are still unemployed, then think about work program/work placements |

I didn't think 91 year olds were eligible for Job Seekers Allowance.
