Not sure this is the right sub-forum for this question, so please bear with me if not....

Remote control for a "foreign" satellite receiver (to be exact an Aston Simba Fransat HD box). Over the last few weeks its performanace has become more and more erratic, some buttons becoming unresponsive or plain b-minded by not working at all, some buttons issuing erroneous instructions as judged by the reaction of the box.

Took remote to bits, and to cut a long story short I can get it working for minutes at a time by using a hair-dryer to warm up the touch responsive circuit board. Warming up the rubber "mat" with the moulded buttons doesn't do the trick. Improvement lasts about ten minutes, then it's back to the same buttons not working and other anomalies.

No sign of "damage" such as corrosion. All looks pretty clean.

I've got a replacement "universal" on order, (Meliconi Pratico 6, which has a dedicated code for the Aston Fransat box apparently) but I'd ideally like to get the original remote working. Would some sort of switch-cleaning solution effect a better more permanent cure than the hair-drayer?

Any advice gratefully received - thanks.

A "proper" replacement is about 40.

If it's a circuit problem I wonder why the application of a little heat cures the problem completely - albeit only temporarily?

Clean the rubber mat and contacts with alcohol or video head cleaner. Vodka will do but don't use meths.

Thanks Winston. I'll give it a try, and report back.

De-icer will do but dry it off with a hair dryer.

Thanks for all the advice. Alcohol cleaning appeared to make no difference.

New remote arrived and old one temporarily retired. After about a week I put its batteries back in (it was in bits at the time so they'd fallen out) and tried it. Now works perfectly again, and has done for 48 hours.

Now isn't that odd.....
