What "difficulties" are people having?

Some customers may be experiencing difficulties using their mobile phone at the moment. We’re working to fix the problem. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

The Giffgaff lot must be well annoyed!, 3rd time in a week!

"Service is improving for customers who may have been impacted by an intermittent problem when using their mobile phone from earlier this afternoon. Our engineers are continuing to monitor the situation. We apologise for any inconvenience"

It still shows the status as red for 'ongoing' though.

According to O2, the weather is to blame PMSL!

http://www.mobilenewscwp.co.uk/2013/...verse-weather/

Quote:
“The full statement reads: “O2 service issues: Please be aware that due to the adverse weather conditions across the UK, many O2 Mobile users are experiencing low or no signal. This is causing calls to be dropped and in some cases no service at all.”

Met office issues a "yellow" warning of rain and the O2 network goes down.

I bet O2 are very pleased the weather is so crap today, in order to have a ready-made excuse for this debacle. Most customers will just go with it, no doubt.

Extremely likely I would love know what they would say about people getting signal on other 3 major networks.

Interestingly rumour has it O2 were conducting emergency government alerting tests in some areas to send tens of thousands emergency texts over the control channel, and people are wondering if in fact that was the cause, the network couldn't cope and crashed.

They were testing in North Yorkshire, Suffolk and Glasgow. One theory is that this might have crashed the network.

Here's the Glasgow article, the outage started 2 hours before though, so I think it might just be coincidence.

Thanks I was quite curious why Three was not included in the emergency alert system is it a 2G only system?

No, I think they just chose not to take part in the trials. If and when it gets implemented I'm sure all networks will be involved, but I think only EE, VF and O2 agreed to do the trials.

It is odd as you say, O2 was planning to send all these texts at 2PM, whether they went ahead or cancelled in light of the outage, or whether that in some way caused it who knows.

I bet Tesco get frustrated as it damages their reputation. At least they have nice big message up saying "network outage" on their homepage!

On a serious note, and O2-bashing (as Wave would have it) aside, how can this keep happening? Like, really...HOW can we have three of these in 18 months? Whereas we have had none of a similar nature on the other three networks during that time.

O2 really have to do something about this now.

The more concerning thing is the loss to business, credit card terminals M2M services, criminal tag tracking, Boris bikes and many other services all rely on O2.

3rd outage in 18 months, and 9 hours and counting for todays outage...

Tuesday night I had text problems now and again with 02 and as I posted elsewhere and I had no signal for over two hours yesterday from 11.30am or just before that.

Smart meters will soon be run exclusively on O2 as well.

Why do so many important services use O2's network then? Is it because it was BT back in the day, and contracts have just been renewed since?

Surely Vodafone look like a better option for that kind of thing now.

O2 aggressively sells into business and sadly the procurement people look at the facts and figures and are impressed by who else uses the network, but don't consider the downtime & reliability.

O2 are the sweetheart of the marketing world, priority moments, the O2,massive sponsorship deals blah blah, used by the BBC, Sky, and a huge number of corporations. Sadly the actual network performance doesn't seem as important as the glossy brochures and the smart suits the staff wear when they sell these things.

Just think yourself lucky O2 no longer manage the emergency services communications network which BT bid for and won, but O2 actually ran for a while before it moving away from them.
