What qualities do you want from your perfect popstar?
They should be able to sing live without effects and still sound good.
Something about them and/or their music shiuld make me feel excited or emotional or glad or brave, so I get that feeling even thinking about them or hearing the intro to a song. They should have sex appeal even if they're an unlikely crush or a bit funny looking. Barry White, Barry Manilow, Lionel Ritchie, Chris Martin, either Gallagher brother, Posh Spice, Florence from the machine, Madonna, Lady Gaga all come to mind. Not conventionally beautiful but still sexy. |

Songwriter, quirky personality, endearing, writes about their own experiences, special voice, able to hold themselves well without becoming arrogant...
.I think Ed Sheeran is an ideal popstar in that he's a musician, unconventially attractive and a decent guy. |

Can sing properly (i.e. not dependent on sound effects). I don't need big voices; they can join Team Xtina on The Voice USA and be eliminated early. A nice tone in the voice can compensate for a lack of range, up to a point. Control is a must.
Stage presence (!!!). Watching some acts on The X-Factor is frustrating because they don't know how to act on stage. Offenders include those who smile in sad songs, those who are too closed in their own world (I don't care how intimate the song is; you can and should be able to translate it to a large stage), and awkward hand/foot gestures. Ability to relay their experiences to every performance. Dull isn't worth a second look. An extra something. It's not the same for all, but it's something that makes the artist memorable and lovable. This is why I love the premise of The X-Factor over The Voice or American Idol: because it understands what it takes to make it big (not that many contestants do make it big). |
