Think mine was two Dire Straits albums...Brothers in Arms and Making movies.
There weren't many to choose from in 1983. I think Dire Straits career suffered because people were sick of playing the same cd over and over
CDs were pretty expensive as well i seem to remember.
The sound quality was awful. Unless you had a really good system, i don't know, but i bought a philips cd player and it sounded terrible on my hi-fi. Too tinny a sound.
I think hi-fis and discs have improved over the years and they sound a bit better now.

Level 42's Running in the Family (Platinum Edition) in 1987.

I think it cost me 9.99, which was a bit of a jump up from the 3.99 that I was paying for chart LPs and cassettes at the time.

Still got it.

I didn't buy any CDs till about 1991. I think my first one might have been Elvis Costello - The Man, which I already had on cassette.

The first CD I ever bought was True Blue, but I had to buy it on vinyl as well as never owned a CD Player. I then went on to purchase The Immaculate collection on CD a year or two later still with no CD player as they were so expensive. I remember leaving school at 16 and getting my first job and saving for a year to buy a new pioneer system it cost over 1000 and that was without the CD Player. I had to save for another 6 months before eventually returning to Currys to purchase the CD Player which they had kindly kept hold off until I had saved the money.
I can remember being so disappointed with the sound of the CD as the Vinyl sounded so much better way more depth of sound. Hence to this day I still buy vinyls you can't beat the sound of the spinning black plastic.

Most of the amps and hifis at the time couldnt handle CDS very well. They all sounded harsh and tinny.

I remember my older sister having CDs long before I did, the first one I personally bought by myself was the 'Sometimes' single by Britney Spears, I think

I was made redundant from BT in 1988 and with some of my 'pay off' i devided to buy our first HiFi that had a CD player in built!..... boy was i pleased and proud to be able to do it ...

And the very first cd i bought i found in a bargain basket at the record store I think it was about 4.99 and it was a Drifters hits... in fact i bought it in anticipation of the cd player i was about to buy!....... The second one i bought was Simon and Garfunkals.... Bridge over troubled Waters...one of my most favourite records of the time and a replacement for the LP that we already had ......

I was quite late to CD's, but I think the first one I brought was for Mum's birthday and it was Older by George Michael.
