It was the same with Jade Richards when Cheryl chose Katie and Cher over her but is anyone talking about her this year? Nope because we can all see she hasn't got it. The public are fickle and Melanie will be forgotten about pretty soon

Star quality has sod all to do with her not going through, it's never bothered them before - half of the winners lack it! Although, I don't agree with the opening post, either.

I don't believe that the reason she didn't get through is because there's another chosen one or anything like that, it's simply because the show loves the drama of it all and they thought axing Melanie would create the most drama out of her category.”

There's no doubt the show loves to court controversy and often puts through acts like Wagner or rylan just to stir up headlines. However, a very good reason for leaving out Melanie is that she simply isn't interesting enough to make the final 12. She's neither very good, very bad, funny, opinionated or in any way remarkable. That's why she missed the cut.

I am fed up of saying this, did leon have star quality.Could Wagner sing.
This a cliched excuse people are using to excuse their fav being picked over better singers. Jedward Imo had charisma, which is why they are still going but they were poor singers.
Remember what dani and Simon said to them and I quote " This a singing contest" if so why were poor singers picked for the final. Yep so they could be ridiculed and for entertainment. The xfactor is not about singing. or the best vocalists would be picked.Nicole clearly said Melanie was the best vocalist with the best range.

Different year, it was Gamu

I can't deny Tameras star quality. She has somethjf special. But I also can't help but dislike her.

But I agree Eurostar, they can't criticize her voice, so they go for the "lacking star quaintly" angle. Luckily she wasn't fat, because perhaps that would be why she shouldn't have gone through.

Oh God, remember the furore about her. This Melanie drama is small fry compared to that!

Having seen Melanie perform live, I can say there was nothing about her on stage that impressed me, nothing wrong about her singing but nothing special either, and no performance.

Hannah is not popular she has been as low as 17% in the Mirror poll a some stages this week , now she is only 19% . Melanie has been as high as 36% in the Mirror poll only yesterday and is 33% now

I've not seen her live but from how she comes across on the show she seems to have no musical direction or style if that makes sense. I have no idea what stuff she would release were she to win, she seems like a bit of a puppet, just singing whatever she feels like rather than choosing her songs to form a musical identity.

That could easily be twisted - it's the same posters who constantly take a swipe at Melanie.

Besides, read above. 33% of The Mirror readers support Melanie, too - so it's not just a handful of posters on here. No doubt you've convinced yourself that we're all the same people, though

She is so unremarkable and she was in a tough category. There wasn't much reason for Nicole to pick her when there were more than 3 other girls who were stronger and more polished than her. This show isn't a charity.

Say what you want about Wagner and most of the other contestants, but most of them at least had a distinctive look. Melanie is so plain and boring, she fades into the background and every performance seems like a struggle for her to keep people interested. Her vocals are nothing special, she shouldn't have sung Run as the Leona comparisons didn't help her. She just comes off as missing something.

She's tried so many times, and it hasn't worked. She needs to pursue other avenues because I just don't think this is right for her.”

I'm sorry but I had to laugh at the bit in bold. Even when the show was at its peak, it had filler and weak acts who "lacked star quality".

Series five alone had Daniel, Scott, Eoghan, Girlband and Bad Lashes. Some would even include Austin. That's 50% that lacked in star quality/filler acts. The list is endless, but like I said, we'd be here all night.

The bit in bold is just pure nonsense. If she was so bland and lacked so much star quality, then why not just use her as a filler act like they do with the majority of the acts in the live shows every year? The reason is, they knew if they took her any further, they risked her winning. They obviously didn't want her to win this year, for whatever reason, and that's fair enough. I just find it laughable that people claim it's because she lacked star quality, when that's never ever mattered before on this show.

She got sent home in favour of Cher and Katie though, so I disagree with you - she was obviously lacking in star quality! She was so bland, dull, boring and whatever other creative words that have been used to describe Melanie.

I hope she's given up on her dream. Rejection from this show means you'll never make it

You can't compare this to other seasons as the talent levels fluctuate all the time. She would have walked into the 2007 live shows for example, but I don't think she would have made it past Bootcamp in 2008. The circumstances change, and the show changes. It's nowhere near as bad as what happened to Gamu in 2010, where things were obviously fixed for Katie and her Sony deal to get through to the live shows.

This year, the girls category was just extremely strong. I think Relley was better than Melanie, but she didn't make it either. Melanie has just had a combination of bad luck and not having enough star quality.

Sorry, but if she was memorable enough, she may have got through. She has a decent voice, but there's nothing else there, I haven't seen any personality from her at all throughout her time on the show.

And the metro readers also agree she should have made it.

To me, it's clear Melanie's fans are without a doubt the most passionate. And it's passionate fans who vote.

They may well be, but to look at it in a positive way... now they can save their money and spend it on something nice for themselves.

Oh, I can, because I'm not just comparing this series to one single series, I'm comparing it to every single series, and every single series we always have filler acts who lack star quality. Every single year without fail.

I disagree that the category was/is strong. I actually only rated Melanie, but surprisingly, I thought Jade performed best tonight.

Who's to say whether she's memorable or not? You may not personally remember her, but she was top of my list this year. It's subjective.

At the end of the day, we're never going to know why she was axed.
Was she boring? Was it because she lacked star quality? Was it because she was a threat to win? Was it just to create headlines and drama? None of us will ever know so it's pointless arguing over it - it's best just to draw our own conclusions, I guess.

And the three girls who went through all have the 'x factor' I take it?

Who knows, but they all gave better performances than than Melanie. As did Jade and Relly, come to think of it.

Abi and Hannah are gonna be a piece of cake to get out when they're ready to be disposed of. Abi, just like Janet, will be hyped and then dropped like a sack of spuds.

Melanie however, is Irish and wouldn't be so easy to dispose of. I truly believe that if she had made the finals, she'd have had a good shot of winning. The Irish vote is strong. The English vote would be split among the contestants, including Melanie. She's also incredibly pretty and has a fantastic voice, that we've not even heard a fraction of its potential.

No doubt the haters are going to say my theory is ridiculous, but mark my words, Tamera will win, assuming no more bad press.”

Not a 'hater' and I think Tamera has a good chance of winning because she is a fabulous singer. I DO think your theory is ridiculous however. What I take issue with is that you assume that the X Factor is like the world cup in football and that everybody votes for their own 'nation'. Utter tosh and insulting. I'm Irish, yet I (believe it or not), support whoever I think is the best singer. They could be black, white, yellow, brown, Muslim, Catholic Protestant, Buddhist, Jewish etc etc etc , and from any part of the UK including Scotland Ireland and Wales as well as England. And I think I speak for the majority of people. And if the Irish vote is so 'strong'...why haven't any of the Irish contestants won BB?? I certainly haven't voted for any of them either.

Check out Abi's second performance from tonight's Xtra Factor : weak and nervous and rather pitchy.

God no, Reiley was awful, warbling and shouty, Hanna hit bum notes and and as for Abby, abbysmal.
Nicole clearly said Melanie had the best range and voice.

Actually, Twitter has been streaming with support for her all night.

That link shows the top tweets first, made by people trying to be funny. But in actual fact almost all the regular tweets have been of support.

Melanie was trending before and after her exit. She's been very popular this year.
