Three times X factor once the voice now, sure she will go back to the voice now

Live shows will sort the wheat from the chaff.

None of them are particularly good, but Abi was certainly not the best. She covers up her lack of vocal range with awful turns of note, as others have said, the live shows will probably shine a spotlight on how poor she really is, unless they do their usual trick of backing tracks and overly loud music.

Its a really weak year all round, can't see any of the 12 making a career for themselves unless its for something other than singing.

Abi's second performance at Judges House which was shown on Xtra Factor was even worse than her first one....very nervous and pitchy.

Completely agree! Good to see that some people actually have taste on this forum and don't automatically think that because she isn't the loudest singer that she isn't the best.

I crack up about all this nonsense about "vocal range".

Look up who the biggest selling female artist of all time is. Then come and talk about her "vocal range".

Me too

I think this girl's image is totally manufactured, it got the winner of the Voice votes this year, she's probably hoping the mousey little fey look will do the same for her.

Okay, since you suggested it,I did.Best selling female artists(and ranges, which I knew, so thought I'd share )..Madonna, a pop singer who is a great entertainer (with a respectable 2.6 octaves)...followed by Mariah (4.3 octaves, the 5 octave claim is bs unless rarely stretched for whistle reg notes and studio enhanced lowest notes count-still outstanding rare range though), Whitney(3.1) and Celine (2.5 ish, but more range she doesn't use live, likely closer to 3)

X Factor female winners-Alexandra, just under 3, Leona, just over 3.

Having said that, I don't think Abi has a special voice at all, but she does have talent , and her voice is pleasant enough and suits the genre she adapted it to.

Madonna's vooce is better suited to football chants than singing. Britney can't sing live. Cheryl Cole sounds like Steven Hawking. There are loads of popstars who can't sing. Abi actually can.

Have you ever heard Madonna live? She'd be laughed off by DS on the X Factor. That doesn't mean she's talentless it just means she has her own style.

Thing is that in the real world it isn't about who has the biggest voice.

Actually the main differentiator is about who has the best craft and ability to write songs and create their own niche.

It would be boring if we all had the same opinions I guess. She has a sweet voice but I don't think it's the best by a mile. And yes it's not all about the voice but imo she has all the charisma of a dead tadpole. Trying to big herself up with a silly 60s flower power image doesn't work for me.
Plus I think she is quite limited and far too fragile for a pop career.
'Dreary and teary' sums her up.

Actually, I have. When she began, she was admittedly not very good. In later years, her voice was solid.

After her initial success, she began working on training her voice, and improved a great deal.

In pop, nope, not about the best voice. That is left to classical, soul, jazz and other genres where a "big" and/or technically great voice counts for a lot.

Madonna is primarily an entertainer, and she knows it. A driven, determined, very intelligent and shrewd one.

Abi is young, so maybe she will grow as an artist/entertainer. She is talented, no argument there, but she doesn't at this point stand out in any way from a horde of young neo-folk singers much like her.

Solid? Her voice is solid?

Ouch!

Would have been kinder if you'd just said crap. Plus her biggest sales were in the early days when it was really crap.

Well, good thing that she would know what solid meant and not be offended, and that since I'm not talking about your voice, it doesn't matter that you don't.

I know exactly what solid means, and it's exactly the quality I'd be looking for in a backing singer.

Well, no doubt Madonna would be just over the moon about that interpretation and opportunity

Well ypu can pretend that you and Madonna share a secret musical vocabulary all you like. That she's successful doesn't change the fact that she's a best a seco:yawn:nd rate singer.

As for Abi, I think she's got a chance at a good career. Sure she'll have to change and grow but so will all the others. Voices like hers have been successful in all genres including dance, rock and pop and there's nothing that reality tv likes more than a journey. If she has the courage to take this on and if Nicole is a good mentor in terms of image and song selection, pushing her along incrementally, Abi is in with a big chance.

She is really boring but I can see why Nicole picked her over Melanie even though Melanie has the better vocals

Based on your posts, it seems likely that there are plenty of generally or somewhat generally known and understood terms connected to music and singing that you'd say that about.

As for Abi, I don't think she stands out in any way(,outside the context of this season of the show,) do think she has some talent, and won't say there's no way she will succeed, because yes, others like her have had success, and she may, too.

A couple of songs that Abi could smash on dance week that would totally change perception of her.

Yep, me too.

She reminds me of Andrea Bagley, from the Voice..a breath of fresh air, not sure whether she'll survive too long, because people, I think, often vote for the big Power Ballads, or the meandering vocals which seem to be increasingly "essential," these days, but, maybe that's one of the reasons why Andrea did so well, because, it was pure and straight forward, no nonsense singing, which is sometimes just as powerful and moving as the histrionic stuff..

If you doubt that, then have a listen to K.D. Lang, who can do both, or Kate Rusby.. :O)

Rich.

Well we can all be grateful that an expert like you has decided to bless us with your knowledge and forbearance.

And I wonder, when talking about great singers, Ella, Aretha, Sarah Maclachlan, Kate Bush, is solid the word you use? Yes they're timing and pitch perfect but that's just the start of their talent, not the end of it. If you get that from Madonna then that's her on a good day.

Or even Joni Mitchell, the original "confessional" style singer songwriter who has had a career lasting over 30 years.

Well said, it isn't just about having a "great voice."

Someone mentioned Madonna's vocal limitations..however, there's more to the phenomenon that was/is Madonna than a great voice.

She's co-written some timeless classics and has stayed the course, been a total professional and as part of that she's had vocal coaching, which has improved her voice over the years, making the best of her "limited assets," in that area.

Another artist who's done the same is Marc Almond, if you listen to his early vocals, they were weedy and often sharp, or out of tune..but, now he's a pretty solid vocal performer.

Rich.

Jessica, http://vocalranges.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

This was the first instance of the somewhat generally understood term solid being used to describe Aretha in the many not unexpected results Google returned when I did a quick n lazy search for the term. I am not going to continue replying to someone who would rather argue with others than check their facts first.

Rich, well said, and I agree about Madonna (excellent entertainer and pop songwriter) and Marc Almond improving vocally.
