Hi, I understand that the adapter will not work with certain apps e.g. 4OD but does anybody know if it works with BBC iPlayer, YouTube and the Dailymotion app? If not can you watch video full screen by just using the Dailymotion website? (If somebody owns one of these but doesn't have the apps I would appreciate them trying it out ). And if so can you switch the iPad screen off and just play through the TV?

Also will it work with the various different video apps that allow you to put videos onto the iPad in any format, as I rarely if ever use the Apple video app.

It's the 30-pin adapter not the Lightning if that matters.

The BBC iPlayer app works with Airplay to an Apple TV, so I see no reason why it wouldn't work with the Digital AV Adapter.

Ditto for the YouTube app.

I've also just tried AirPlayer (a UPnP Media Client for streaming various format videos from a computer to an iOS device)... audio only when using Airplay

I was going to test AVPlayer (plays local videos rather than streamed videos like AirPlayer), but don't have any xvid or mkv videos on my iPhone at the moment.


This is of course all with Airplay and not the AV Adapter, as mentioned above... but I would assume the same abilities and restrictions apply.

I do not think the two (Airplay and Digital AV) are much related!

Digital AV with Lightning now relies on having a "correct" (Apple approved?) IC embedded in the cable itself. I do not know if any third parties have managed to spoof this yet!

The issue of whether apps work with the Digital AV Adapter is nothing to do with the chip in the Lightning version.

It is generally to do with rights issues, the same as with whether an app works with Airplay or not.

e.g. Sky Go won't work with either the AV Adapter or Airplay, because of rights issues.

Does anyone know if watching videos full screen through Safari whether you can switch the ipad screen off and just watch on the TV?

So if an app says in its description that it works with Airplay there's a good chance it works with the adapter?

I just use the VGA adaptor into my TV which works fine with iPlayer, YouTube etc.

In watching videos through the adapter and the battery doesn't seem to be going down much. A lot slower than when usually watching video. The iPad screen is off but assuming it's the iPad powering the image on the TV so shouldn't the battery be the same/worse?

No, the iPad is sending the image to the TV but it is not powering the TV screen. Your TV still needs to be plugged into the wall socket to work…

The screen is the most demanding part of a smartphone or tablet for power consumption which is why you see a significant rise in battery life when the screen is off.

Even reducing screen brightness can give a noticeable improvement in battery life.

Is there a way to watch the YouTube app on screen but with the iPad screen off? On the YouTube app it shows on both and not full screen. The YouTube website works but not all videos do as it says unsupported on this device or something.

Which leads me to my next question regarding the Atomic web browser. With the full version I believe you can set it so the websites think you are on a desktop, would the unsupported videos work then in this case? And would YouTube TV show videos work under this setting?
