Not a promising start for The Catch. Do ABC have another flop in their hands?”
Only time will tell. The reviews were mixed. The pilot wasn't a resounding success, but it wasn't bloody awful either. They had to rewrite the whole thing anyway - the original trailer offered a somewhat different plotline. There are stylistics echoes of Scandal aka seasons 1-2 (minus the fast talking) before that show went all bat-crap, ape-crap. Yet it lacks that Scandal "pizazz", though the main female lead is channelling a bit of Olivia Pope. It isn't as dark as HTGAWM - the offices are all bright white for a start
The main female lead actress, Mireille Enos, does two types of facial expressions for me: smiley, smiley, lots of teeth smiley (which is the more distracting of the two facial expression if I'm honest), and shock, slapped with a wet fish stare shock, depending on whether the scene is a happy one or a sad one. But I find her watchable; she just needs to settle into the character I think. Peter Krause feels a tad miscast, which is sad because I liked him in Six Feet and Dirty Sexy Money. But strangely, he just about gets away with it because of what he does with the character: he emotes the character's inner hesitancy and guilty struggles very well. He might be one of those characters who evolves as the drama progresses. The rest of the cast - you need to google their characters' names because I'll be damned if I can remember them. It has an interesting premise story-wise, but I wonder how they are going to sustain the required suspense to keep audiences watching. On the whole, based on my initial reactions to the whole episode, it feels like the School of Shonda-land graduates are trying a tad too hard here to sell their brand, the novelty of which I fear maybe beginnng to wear off on people and ABC is becoming too reliant on. (Blood and Oil and The Family had to have the necessary OMG moments which doesn't quite work these days). And yes, there is the atypical female character doing the downer on relationships and marriage (Shonda channelling Shonda I guess. Idk).

Thing is, while I do like her writing, the whole production feels a little uninventive.
But I think only time will tell if this will be a much needed success for ABC. I will watch it for a few more episodes before I can decide one way or another.
