The X Factor US is done now, no matter what Simon says. The idea that FOX will even have the slight thought of bringing this back is hilarious. All their live shows has been below 2 in the demos and they were nowhere near 10 million viewers, which is both embarrassing and wasteful for advertisers. At least Idol kept their numbers in the mid 2 range and got over 10m viewers. Granted, the show is now a dinosaur and they had a massive year-on-year slump. Face it, no matter who the judges are, how "crazy" the "twists" and even if some contestants look like they have potential, X Factor as a show is dead. Even if FOX has trouble finding its replacement next season, it is better than investing on a show which keeps bleeding numbers.
Friday early ratings: CBS: I love Lucy Christmas Special- 8.65m (1.4) Hawaii Five O- 9.38m (1.2) Blue Bloods- 10.18m (1.1) ABC: Shark Tank (r)- 5.08m (1.1) Shark Tank (r)- 5.48m (1.3) 20/20- 5.49m (1.2) NBC: It's A Wonderful Life (r)- 5.37m (1.1) FOX: Bones (r)- 3.39m (0.8) Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown (r)- 1.90m (0.6) The CW: The Carrie Diaries- 870,000 (0.3) Nikita- 740,000 (0.2) |

There are rumours that the show will take a massive budget cut and air on the same night on Friday; how true this is I don't know. |

I personally can't wait for the renewed and cancellations to be revealed over the next few months.
What do we think is in trouble? I'm in two minds over Mum. I hope it gets renewed, but not sure if it will. Its overall rating is decent, its demo is lacking though. If like the UK, it only mattered on the rating itself, it would be renewed for sure. 2 Broke Girls will get a certain renewal on CBS, as will obviously Big Bang Theory. For FOX, the only thing I see being certainly safe if New Girl, and for The CW, the main 4 are for sure a certainty... Arrow, TVD, Supernatural, The Originals... and Hart of Dixie too? BatB should be gone for sure, and a toss up between The Tomorrow People and Reign. |

Sorry for the lack of ratings, everything are pretty much repeats at the moment! Everything returns to normal in a week or two.

Also, unrelated question but does anyone know anything about what happened to Siberia from the summer, I know it's ratings were worse than atrocious but I enjoyed it and it hasn't been 'officially' cancelled yet, just want to be put out of my misery :P lol |

It's very strange that they don't bother with Christmas programming, I know its advertiser led and there's not much to be made but I still thought a couple of Christmas special's of things might work. I can't see the US audience being vastly different than the UK ones in wanting to watch a bit of TV in the evening after the festivities are winding down?

It's not been officially renewed but I think it should be. It started with 3.07m and ended with 2.2m. So it did OK in terms of the overall ratings. |

These numbers are truly awful. Then again, Parks & Recreation and recently-ended 30 Rock gets similar numbers, so what else is new? Community is getting low numbers and coming last in off-net syndications. I wonder if NBC will fulfill their dream of a "six season and a movie"? As for ABC, they haven't started their New Year right at all. I was shocked that The Taste even got a second season renewal, considering they bombed last spring. If ABC really wanted to give it another shot, they should have scheduled it on Fridays after Shark Tank. However, the show expanded to a two-hour format now. I have never heard of The Assets until now. I don't think it stuck out at the upfronts either. |

Seriously, is TBBT the only sitcom that US audiences watch on broadcast TV?
There are quite a few of us do that so the total audience is even higher than official figures suggest. |

Grimm came back healthy, which is fantastic. The Carrie Diaries came back with a high and finally going above the 1 million mark. Hopefully it will stay above that numbers when the final numbers releases in a few days.

Total viewers don't count at all in US ratings. It's the percentage of adults aged 18-49. Which at 0.4% is terrible for Carrie Diaries.

Looks like TBBT will do fine at the People's Choice Awards!!!! Seriously, is TBBT the only sitcom that US audiences watch on broadcast TV? Modern Family is also doing great, but is now far from their peak. I can see 2 1/2 Men getting a 18-episode send off next season, since the numbers are not that traumatizing yet. The Crazy Ones will get cancelled and it's still confusing for The Millers. Their numbers are alright, but the retention from TBBT is not that exciting.
NBC must love their sitcoms so much to give them endless chances. These numbers are truly awful. Then again, Parks & Recreation and recently-ended 30 Rock gets similar numbers, so what else is new? Community is getting low numbers and coming last in off-net syndications. I wonder if NBC will fulfill their dream of a "six season and a movie"? ![]() It's mad to think that The Crazy Ones is the most likely to be cancelled - given that, on any other network, that would be considered a fairly solid success! But I agree, The Millers is the stronger show ratings-wise, and is highly likely to be renewed. I don't know if any show would manage to retain all of TBBT's audience, I think they do OK. The audience leaving TBBT doesn't seem to go anywhere else (network, anyway), so people are literally turning on their TV for TBBT and switching off when it's over. There's clearly a group of people who only watch that and MF! Community's numbers are lower than I hoped but then, it's never been a ratings winner. I think the comparison with Parks and Recs is valid - both are high quality, well written shows, but just don't have broad appeal - and perhaps never will. However, the one thing in their favour is that the two shows that follow it - SSTW and Michael J Fox - are performing so horribly this season that Community stands up as a relative success, given the much lower baseline it was operating from (risk of cancellation, showrunner issues, cast changes etc). A reduced 6th season wouldn't be a failure, IMO, and they could parse the 'lost' episodes into that much-longed-for movie anyway! |

I have been looking at the bubble watch and it really is fascinating as you have all discussed how networks reach their decisions.
One thing is confusing me. What does "spackle options" for the networks mean. I have tried to google the term but it seems to be about walls. It may mean something the same as trying to fix something that has gone wrong. |

BTW, the Winter Olympics are likely to be inducing the need for networks to find short-runs of either existing shows, or risking first runs of new shows, only for them to be interrupted only a month or so into the winter season. I guess that's why we're seeing so many shows return from the winter break so soon after New Year. Most years, we'd still be waiting at least a week or so more, but this year it's been a crash-bang straight into relaunches and new shows. And it's why there are so many 'holes' to fill! Many of the big shows are not really returning until after the Olympics finishes. |

I presume that it borrows from the literal meaning of spackling, and refers to shows that are 'filler' throughout the broadcast schedule, instead of getting a dedicated, longer run. So, a show that maybe goes on a hiatus from a primetime slot, coming back to fill a needed hole in the network's schedule, between their more desirable options perhaps? But, like you, I've really never heard the term before in relation to TV!

If NBC airs four comedies on Thursdays, then it makes a far more attractive spackle option than any of the freshmen comedies so far." The article also mentions a show called 'the Assets" which apparently has the worse ratings ever in the big four which will be 'thrown' under the bus of the Olympics. It should be a fascinating time to see what the Networks do and the outcome for shows. |
