By te way, Big Bang Theory was adjusted up to 19.2m and a 5.4. It's a beast!
It's had 20m viewers before now (adjusted upwards).

January 10 2012 and September 26 2013 (this season's premiere).

So there's a chance next Thursday's episode will break the all-time record (after adjustment).

Over 30 million watched the NFL game on NBC last night with 9.8 in the demo.

I would expect even more for the 49ers @ Packers tonight, which is being hyped as one of the coldest games ever, and in a lot of America its too cold to leave the house, so tv ratings should benefit.

Don't know about a new record, but it's sure high!!!! The Simpsons clearly benefited from football, despite a huge drop in retention. In cable, Orange Bowl on ESPN made good numbers as well with a 3.6 and 11.4m total viewers on Friday. Modern Family is a beast on rerun airings on USA!!!!

Is that a record for Wildcard Weekend?
Yep. San Francisco @ Green Bay averaged 47.1 million for the game; previous record was 42.4 million for Pittsburgh @ Denver, January 8th 2011. Source http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/49er...ox-1201031826/

Methinks this Super Bowl is gonna be huge, even by it's standards.

The Bachelor did quite well, considering it was opposite the end of the BCS game apparently. Castle is down, but the whole season has been between 1.9 to 2.1. On a good day, it gets a 2.2 in 18-49 demo. It just goes to show no matter what show is before them, Castle has a strong fanbase of their own. One thing that does concern me though is that the numbers are too stagnant at this point, which can be both good and bad. I wonder how much longer ABC can afford to keep Castle around like this? They are in their sixth season. Also, Castle has already started airing in syndications on TNT and other broadcast networks. Hostages is done for sure. I'm even surprised that CBS even bothered airing the whole thing. At least CBS can spin to say it was supposed to be a "limited series".

Just read that 'The Assets' 8 part mini series from ABC has been pulled after only 2 episodes.
Apparently it was meant to hold the line for the return of Scandal which they are going to hold over until the end of the Olympics.
It really does seem that the president Paul Lee must be in danger of losing his job as ABC are not doing well at all in the choices it makes. Killer women is also not doing well.

Should ABC consider moving Shark Tank to another night to see if it can do well there? It seems to pull in a good demo for a Friday night.

Link: http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/201...ed-too/218990/

There was recently an article about Paul Lee and his future on ABC at TVbyTN a few weeks back. When he started on 2011-12 season, six new scripted shows, at the time, was renewed for a second season. The following season, only two new shows got renewed!!! Now at his current season, they are saying only Agents of SHIELD is a certainty to see a second season while all other freshman shows are likely or have already been axed.

He has been in danger of losing his job for quite sometime now, but his latest two flop dramas must be the final nails in his coffin. Then again, none of the midseason dramas from the broadcast network has managed to take off well so far. Even Intelligence got a 2.4, which is average for their debut. CBS boasted on how Intelligence managed to get 16m viewers and shit. While impressive, it does skew very old, which isn't very helpful to the main advertisers 18-49 demo.

I read that article. Most new shows have decent premieres as people just tune in to see if they like it. I didn't know that Marvel was owned by Disney so they say that is why they will renew regardless of the disappointing ratings. Also I didn't know that the CW was a subsidiary of CBS. Things like whether a network has produced a show itself or outsourced all seem to have relevance.

I had a look at the fan bingo card that TVBTN have put up because fan bingo excuses have been mentioned so often in the comments. Actually although the site etc take the mickey I think some excuses are relevant eg what your opposition is. I read that Reign for example will be on its own without a big lead in for a few weeks so it will be interesting to see how it does. People might tune in after watching a programme and then tune out. This is why some commentators are really interested in half hour numbers.

I presume that it borrows from the literal meaning of spackling, and refers to shows that are 'filler' throughout the broadcast schedule, instead of getting a dedicated, longer run. So, a show that maybe goes on a hiatus from a primetime slot, coming back to fill a needed hole in the network's schedule, between their more desirable options perhaps? But, like you, I've really never heard the term before in relation to TV!
Pretty much yes, shows that can be used to hide the cracks

Originally Posted by TV by the numbers

Something needs to air in their place. Networks have learned the hard way that trying to promote and launch a new show over one to two weeks in that same slot rarely works.

The best option networks have is to fill in those holes with "spackle" - pre-existing shows with established audiences (even if those audiences are smaller than average) that networks can drop into those slots with little promotion. Procedurals and broader comedies work best.

Over the last few years, most networks have learned to have their cake and eat it too by scheduling their spackle options on Friday. Those premieres are usually delayed 2-4 weeks to give the networks time to evaluate the new shows. This allows the networks to have a replacement show ready if a new show fails, while also avoiding eating $20+ Million on a spackle order that sits on the shelf until Summer if the new shows succeed.

Just read that Intelligence has dropped 55% an amazing number to 1.1 ( initial ratings). That doesn't surprise me at all. Perhaps they will need some 'spackle' for this.

Plus the Blacklist also fell a great deal. Some say it was because it didn't have the voice as a lead in. I watched it last night and I couldn't believe the violence from the 'anti-hero'. I won't watch again as I think it went way beyond what could possibly be condoned. Someone wrote on the comments they thought the 'Mancy' people would have tuned out: not sure who they are.

I always thought Blacklist would burn itself out pretty quickly, based off the first 3 episodes. Odd it fell this week mind, given it was the first Monday without any kind of American football since September.

On The CW being 50% owned by CBS, I didn't realise that they are owned by the same guy who owns Viacom, who own Comedy Central, MTV, BET, Spike TV and Paramount Pictures until the other day.

The CBS/Viacom story is quite strange/interesting
