A programme doesn’t need to hit exactly 100 episodes to make it a good syndication package, 4 full seasons (of 22+ episodes) normally does it. If CBS were keeping Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five O around purely for syndication purposes then they wouldn’t have brought them back for a 5th seasons. In fact I know Hawaii Five O already has a very good syndication deal with TNT for CBS. From a syndication perspectives both programmes have reached that milestone, now the additional episodes are simply adding to the syndication value further.
Plus you have to remember its Friday night, when ratings are notoriously lower. A 1.3 demo (Hawaii Five O) and a 1.2 demo (Blue Bloods) might look fairly poor on any other night, but on a Friday night it actually makes them the 4th and 5th highest rated programmes of the night across all networks.
They do have issues though. For starters they seem to be very popular with the older audience (50+ years old), particularly Blue Bloods, which is next to useless in terms of adverting revenue (I suspect this is due to the Friday night slot to a degree). And both programmes are relatively expensive to produce, and this will only continue the longer they go on as the cast will demand higher salaries.
In my opinion the real winner on Friday nights is ABC with Shark Tank (a.k.a Dragons Den USA). A very good 1.8 demo, making it the most popular programme of the night, and extremely cheap to produce.
