Looking at comedies, It was not a good year last year... what survived?
Mom and The Millers on CBS. About A Boy on NBC, Brooklyn Nine Nine on FOX and The Goldbergs on ABC. Anything else? Comedies/sitcoms are a difficult one to get right, but there seems to be quite a lot of new comedies coming up. |

Both H50 and Blue Bloods hit 100 episodes this season so I think unless CBS want more episodes for syndication, they are goners.
I can't see CBS cancelling too many veteran dramas, CSI I would think will get a final season |

The thing is with CBS, a handful of their shows are not hitting their demos very well and I have known them to cancel past shows for having slightly high demos (ghost whisperer a big example, having scored a 1.9 in it's final season). I find CBS do pride themselves on demos much more than most networks. But it seems they are giving leeway to many of their shows.
With Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods, it'll be one that get renewed for a final season or the other cancelled. |

Ghost Whisperer had hit syndication numbers plus CBS didn't fully own it. The CBS produced shows tend to be renewed over the ones produced or coproduced by other studios.

I predict a massive audience for the 'Frozen' special, I doubt they will equal it in future weeks though.

That's true but you think regardless of whether CBS own the show, why cancel a show like ghost whisperer which earned a very good 1.9. But yet kept a show like the mentalist which wasn't their show for a final season which averaged even lower. CBS are very odd in their decisions.

It will be hilarious to see Animation Domination and Brooklyn 99 likely getting a 2+ in demos while all their other shows (Gotham and Sleepy Hollow aside) can't even manage that. |

Don't think they will win the slot since they are up against The Simpsons premiere, which was very hyped on which character will be killed off. Although to be fair, the episode title REALLY gives it away. It will be a tough call between Resurrection and Family Guy/Simpsons crossover.

What a disappointment if that is the character who dies. The character has been described as beloved. I don't want to talk on behalf of people but I never hear any fans rave or even talk about the character. Plus if it is that character, it won't make a difference to the show as we have only see that character about 5 times or less.

Plus you have to remember its Friday night, when ratings are notoriously lower. A 1.3 demo (Hawaii Five O) and a 1.2 demo (Blue Bloods) might look fairly poor on any other night, but on a Friday night it actually makes them the 4th and 5th highest rated programmes of the night across all networks. They do have issues though. For starters they seem to be very popular with the older audience (50+ years old), particularly Blue Bloods, which is next to useless in terms of adverting revenue (I suspect this is due to the Friday night slot to a degree). And both programmes are relatively expensive to produce, and this will only continue the longer they go on as the cast will demand higher salaries. In my opinion the real winner on Friday nights is ABC with Shark Tank (a.k.a Dragons Den USA). A very good 1.8 demo, making it the most popular programme of the night, and extremely cheap to produce. |

According to early household ratings, Marc Berman said there were no losers in any Sunday show, in fact, most shows were up on last year.
- Once Upon a Time was 6% above last years opener - The Good Wife was up 28% from last years opener - Madam Secretary only dropped 13% from its pilot - The Simpsons up 25% from last year - Family Guy up a massive 59% from last years opener... expected to hit a 4.0 apparently. So, FOX was saved from its awful streak of bad ratings and demo last night and in total was up 38% from the same Sunday last year. |

A programme doesn’t need to hit exactly 100 episodes to make it a good syndication package, 4 full seasons (of 22+ episodes) normally does it. If CBS were keeping Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five O around purely for syndication purposes then they wouldn’t have brought them back for a 5th seasons. In fact I know Hawaii Five O already has a very good syndication deal with TNT for CBS. From a syndication perspectives both programmes have reached that milestone, now the additional episodes are simply adding to the syndication value further.

Looks like animations are solutions to FOX right now. I do think they will get their regular mid 2s in coming weeks. Interestingly enough, I read on the THR website that the Simpsons producers were told that getting a 2 is a "magnificent number". I wouldn't stretch it that far but it is a passable enough number to survive in today's ratings climate. However, when your show is on FOX, getting a 2 is like getting a 4 on ABC, I suppose. That's how low FOX has become.
Madam Secretary I think might get a full series. I wouldn't be surprised if The Mentalist ends up on Fridays replacing The Amazing Race. |

FOX has Brooklyn 99 and Mulaney debuting next week, FOX hasn't a live action sitcom on Sundays since Malcolm in the Middle ended. Animation has proven tricky for FOX because only a few things have stuck, Bob's Burgers I imagine will be axed at the end of this season and I can't see Bordertown doing that well either. Cable networks like FX and Comedy Central have managed to do different things with animation with the likes of Archer, Brickleberry etc whereas FOX has stuck with the same family sitcom mould, maybe an animated comedy that isn't family focused would be an option or a CG animated series.

Sunday early ratings:
CBS: 60 Minutes- 9.17m (1.1) Madam Secretary- 12.66m (1.4) The Good Wife- 11.20m (1.3) CSI- 9.66m (1.4) ABC: Once Upon A Time: Frozen Special- 5.14m (1.5) Once Upon A Time- 9.34m (3.4) Resurrection- 7.57m (2.2) Revenge- 5.26m (1.4) NBC: Football night in America- 6.23m (2.0), 2.02m (2.7), 16.06m (5.7) Sunday Night Football- 19.85m (7.6) FOX: NFL- 20.66m (7.3) The OT- 19.12m (6.8) The Simpsons- 8.50m (3.9) Brooklyn Nine Nine- 5.45m (2.6) Family Guy- 8.39m (4.5) Only loser of the night is Revenge really. FOX has an incredible night with the returns of The Simpsons, Family Guy and Brooklyn Nine Nine. B99 was at the highest since its pilot I think. Looks like FOX has their day in Sunday as their saviour. OUAT did very well too. Most shows were up. Sunday CBS skews very old! |

Brooklyn 99 did okay, better than the rest of the live action FOX sitcoms but didn't benefit from The Simpsons lead in. Will be interesting how Mulaney fare.
CBS skews old but the ratings aren't too shabby, Football always does well for NBC and the overrun benefitted FOX as well |

The FOX animated comedies have desirable demos hence why they've been on the air so long, Football and The Walking Dead have higher male demos but FOX still makes money from syndication, The Simpsons on FXX has proven to be a ratings winner despite being repeats.
I think CBS needs to try and age down the network but there is a risk there could alienate their core audience. CBS has two comedies that will debut at midseason, wonder if they should try them out on Sundays at 8pm, they should get at least a 2 rating in the demo |

CSI and Revenge slightly average, perhaps slightly below average to be honest. Plus MS saw a drop from it's premiere.
Go Once upon a time Brooklyn 99 has done incredibly well, compared to how meh New girl and Mindy do. It's the only decent comedy FOX have anyway so it's worthy of the success. Huge for family guy and the simpsons but this will just be a blimp as they have both been hugely hyped episodes for a long time. |
