Yeah, I think it's wrong. UK measures it better. So a show like Downton Abbey would probably get cancelled here despite getting 9-10m viewers just because not a lot of young people watch it? 9-10m in the US is the same as something having around 35m there, imagine if that was cancelled?

I think BOTH numbers and demos/shares should be important. It's good for advertisers to have a strong younger audience, BUT does that mean they can't really have different shows which cater for an older audience? That's why there are a lot of younger looking shows in the US.
NCIS has lowish demos but the high ratings mean that it will attract a good number of 18-49 as well as 25-54. I doubt any network would cancel a show with an extremely high ratings but a slightly low demo.

The CBS Friday night audience skews old but it doesn't matter as Friday is a low rated demo night anyway.

Cheers Guys, that helps a lots I still can't quite understand the logic but hey (and this is me being well in the target demo )
It's worth remembering, in US tv, the advertisers are the networks customers and the viewers are the product being sold. What is shown on screen is almost coincidental to this.

That has nothing to do with "US TV." The same logic you outline applies to any ad-supported TV, whether in the US, the UK, or elsewhere. The UK has four BBC channels without ads, and the US has PBS, HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax, TCM, and other channels with no ads, which together make up a pretty important part of "US TV."

This little video explains a bit for those new to how ratings work, but I don't believe they cover everything

Wednesday night early ratings...

CBS:
Survivor- 9.89m (2.5)
Criminal Minds- 10.95m (2.7)
CSI- 9.43m (2.0)

ABC:
Toy Story of Horror- 10.29m (3.0)
Back In The Game- 6.24m (1.8)
Modern Family- 10.85m (4.0)
Super Fun Night- 6.02m (2.1)
Nashville- 5.75m (1.7)

FOX:
Baseball- 8.06m (2.4)

NBC:
Revolution- 5.39m (1.4)
Law and Order SVU- 5.39m (1.7)
Ironside- 4.91m (1.1)

CW:
Arrow- 3.02m (1.1)
The Tomorrow People- 2.16m (0.8)

A lot of things increasing which is good to see. Most interesting is seeing Arrow's increase from a 0.9 last week to 1.1 this week and over 3m! I hope it is not adjusted down! 1.1 is perfect for being #1 show of the channel, I reckon it could be #1 this week, depending on how TVD does this week, but I think it could win, if not, it will be #2.

Arrow also got the best demos since Feb 2013.

Revolution hasn't half sunk hasn't it! Ironside is surely a gonner as well. Could see that lasting only a couple more weeks, although through until Christmas wouldn't surprise me.

Going back to Tuesday, the 2 Hour Fox Comedy block just doesn't work. I don't know why they persist with it. They would be better off 2 blocks of an hour of comedy during the week.

They are however hamstrung by the fact that they have 3 hours of Music Reality shows broadcasting throughout the year, with one rating really badly, and another falling spectacularly last year (who knows how that'll go from January.)

Look at The CW's ratings, it seems it's sci-fi shows are the biggest rating earners, while the drama's are flopping.

The Originals, The Vampire Diaries Supernatural, Arrow and The Tomorrow People are their top shows.

The genre shows have always been the successful shows on The CW and even in the days when it was The WB and UPN with hits like Buffy and Angel.

I like to see The CW bring back family shows like Gilmore Girls or Dawson's Creek which was a teen show but people related to. With the success of WLITA, comedy should also make a comeback although on what night, I'm not sure.

The CW also needs to look at shows from studios other than Warner Bros or CBS Studios, I'm sure ABC Studios or Fox would have shows in development that would be in the CW target demo.

Preliminary Demo Ratings for Thursday Night
Code:
ABC
Once Wonderland 1.2
Grey's Anatomy 2.6
Scandal 3.3

CBS
Big Bang Theory 4.9
Millers 3.2
Crazy Ones 2.5
2.5 Men 2.1
Elementary 1.6

FOX
Baseball 2.4

NBC
Parks & Rec 1.3
Welcome to the Family	0.9
Sean Saves the World	1.1
MJ Fox Show 1.2
Parenthood 1.3

CW
Vampire Diaries 1.3
Reign 0.8
I can see ABC moving Wonderland into Betrayal's spot on sunday any day now. NBC's thursday comedy night really isn't working and as one of CBS's lowest rated thursday comedies, it will be Mens last year, it hasn't been the same show since Charlie left anyhow!

Bye Bye Wonderland
Have yet to see it but i am shocked it is flopping. I have a feeling ABC may see it out to it's full 13 episode order.

Reign did rather ok. The CW better hope it remains stable as they have already ordered six more episodes.

Mom, The Millers & The Crazy Ones have got full season orders from CBS.

I really like The Millers, The Crazy Ones is amusing but Mom is a bit hit & miss

The Millers and The Crazy Ones both seem to the breakout hits of the season, so i am really not suprised. Seen neither of them yet, but i am just happy to see Sarah Geller seeing some mainstream success again as her career didn't really go anywhere since she finished Buffy

Not surprised by Millers or The Crazy Ones but Mom getting a full season is surprising, would have thought extra episodes at best. Makes me wonder where the midseason comedies will go.

I think Mom is getting better treatment than any other comedy would get because it has Chuck Lorre at the helm.

Wouldn't be surprised if Mom is cut to say 18 episodes and replaced with either Bad Teacher or Friends with Better Lives.

CBS has a midseason legal drama Reckless, I imagine that'll be either Sundays with either The Mentalist or Good Wife getting shortened seasons or Friday at 8pm

That's awesome, AMC will be seriously delighted its still growing, and right on the back of the success of Breaking Bad's final run too means its been an excellent couple of months for them. They do need another scripted show pronto to hit big though, how did Low Winter Sun fare, I saw the pilot and thought it looked good but was a bit slow?

Horror and fantasy seem to rate well with the likes of Game of Thrones, American Horror Story and Walking Dead doing great on cable.

LWS, just didn't seem to be different enough from stuff we've seen before, The Shield and others have done the corrupt cop better IMHO. It's watchable but not brilliant.

Off course there's the TWD spin-off, but that's not until 2015, but one presumes that's a ratings banker.

Amazing the ratings for Talking Dead too, who'd have thought a nerdy show talking about a show would be so massive, probably beats many networks big shows on it's own.
