Is it any wonder? Many of the pilots this season are either not good, meh/average or has that air of the familiar "been there, done that" about them - the last one in particular for me. In The Backlist we are still no nearer to finding out the mystery surrounding Liz Keene - and Liz Keene continues to be the dumbest no-clue "top of her class" FBI analyst I have ever witnessed in TV drama. Someone on the HTGAWM thread pointed out the lack of a plot in the show this season, and when I look back on what we have seen so far, they have a point. I stopped watching Castle after last year's mid-season break.
For me, it's not about having high expectations. It's about not having to watch yet another version of what it already on TV. Empire is now going to be followed by a Scorese/Jagger music-based drama set in the 70s called Vinyl. Blindspot has an whiff of The Blacklist surrounding it. Quantico has a trace of Shondaland-seque about it. The Player wants to pack in every idea going into its plot, it's almost too surreal for a show set in the present day. Agent X - which is to come - looks no different and comes across more as a vehicle for Sharon Stone than anything the viewers would want to see. And then we have the older shows which are coming up to their last final runs: The Good Wife and POI (whIch were struggling last year compared with how they did in the past). On. top of all that, we have cancellations which doesn't leave much room or time for people to be as a creative as they would like w/o having to do something that has already been done before.
I mean, all the above shows are ok and entertaining but I'm not surprised at the ratings they are getting.
