Forever's numbers weren't amazingly terrible but they weren't especially good either. It hit a 0.9 three times in its run which obviously isn't great but from January-May it averaged a 1.0 so it wasn't quite as terrible as a lot of what ABC have seen in this slot. I think they made the right decision to can it. I don't imagine the numbers would have rebounded in the Fall this season and ABC are already carrying a lot of dead weight.

“They renewed Galavant, which performed much worse than Forever”
Galavant actually outperformed Forever. It averaged a 1.3 across its season although admittedly a lot of that was the result of an elevated opener. I can see why they kept it. Its a difficult sell and think its worth seeing if they can grow some kind of cult audience for it. Plus it fills a potentially awkward slot for them while Once Upon a Time is on hiatus.

“and also American Crime, whose demos were pretty much the same as Forever.”
American Crime of course is critically acclaimed awards bait. Plus ABC/Disney would quite like to be in the John Ridley business which gives the series more rope. And ABC really want a full on anthology series to call their own.
