Is it just me or do Sega still have the finest videogame soundtracks known to man? Over the years I have played a great many of their top games, and the fact is still true to this day. When I think about my favourite game music it's always Sega. No one else comes close for me. I recently discovered the frankly fantastic Sonic Generations, and it's this game that sealed the deal. They still make the best music.

I think some of the best tracks have been from Tomoya Ohtani, whose name, in spite of my deep love for the music, I have only just discovered. It turns out this chap is responsible for pretty much all my favourite tracks, particularly in recent years. Sir, I salute you!

Some of my favourite stuff (not all from Generations or Tomoya):

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz - Smooth Sherbet
Sonic Generations - Rooftop Run
Sonic Colours - Aquarium Park
Sonic Colours - Planet Wisp
NiGHTS Into Dreams - Splash Garden
Rez - Fear is the Mind Killer

There's so many, I haven't even looked at Shenmue!

Please list up your favourites if you are a sad Sega fan like me. I've definitely missed a metric crap-ton of awesome Sega music with my list.

Loads of stuff by Yuzo Koshiro was great, in particular the soundtracks to Revenge of (Super) Shinobi and the Streets Of Rage series.

Just a couple of examples.

Also liked Chris Huelsbeck's music.

I think Yuzo Koshiro was the first guy who, for me, made videogame music something that stepped out of the cartoon 8 bit sound and into something much more funky and acceptable. The Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle soundtrack(s) are still amazing, despite their age and crusty audio quality. Put it this way, he was the first videogame music creator who me and all my mates actually recognised. We all knew the name back then.

I have similar taste and Sega's music has always been so good. Sonic R, Panzer Dragoon (Zwei in particular) also had a great soundtracks. It's honestly too hard for me to list my favorites. I guess NiGHTS would be near the top, it's probably the most uplifting gaming experience I've have and a lot of that is largely attributable to the music, it's so emotional! (as in happy happy joy joy).

Glad I'm not on my own! I agree there are so many to even begin thinking of listing them all, but thanks so much for mentioning Sonic R, which is another fine example. Especially Diamonds in the Sky. That was my favourite track.

Just boogying round the room while that's playing...

None of it beats the magical 'Seeeeegggggaaaaaa' when the mega drive booted up. To this day, I hear it and it send a shiver down my spine and brings a tear of joy to my eyes

See? I forgot some of the strongest, most inspiring game music there is. Outrun is obviously iconic, but Jet Set Radio is an amazing achievement imho. These things are timeless. We need a Sega Museum!

Agreed with yuso koshiro. Revenge of shinobi is and probably always will be my favorite ever videogame soundtrack. The classic sega am2 arcade games of the 80s outrun, space harrier, afterburner and hang on are some of my favorite soundtracks of all time too

Space harrier - Bonus stage theme

Space harrier - Main theme

Space harrier - First boss theme

Space harrier - Game over theme

afterburner 2 - Super stripe

Afterburner 2 - Main Theme

Hang on - Main theme

Sonic unleashed and yakuza 4 has some of the best tracks of the recent sega games

I completely agree. I always smile when i hear a SEGA game, and i can tell without looking if someone is playing a SEGA game just by listening to the music.

For me the best example of Sega's musical ability is Streets of Rage. How they managed to get such complex multi-layered dance tracks (for the time) on such a basic Mega Drive sound chip is beyond me.
