For me, these four:

The Sea Devils coming out of the sea

Linx taking his helmet off

Leela ripping off Weng-Chiang's mask

Sarah Jane. Telephone. Zygon.
I didn't sleep much in the 70s.

I only started watching properly with the 2005 revival, but I remember seeing a repeat of an older episode prior to this when I was much younger, it must have been either the late 90s or early 00s. Anyway, I later found out the episode was called "Snakedance."

I just remember a scene with a character played by Martin Clunes, along with Tegan, possessed. Clunes was talking in a creepy, distorted voice, saying "Look at me. That's right! Look. At. Me." They both had the most psychotic smiles on their faces, too.

Oh, and then Tegan's eyes went red, I think.

I was utterly terrified!

But, considering I decided to become a viewer when Who returned in 2005, clearly it had some sort of positive influence.

I'm one of those people who was never terrified by Who! I watched it for some great action/adventure stories as a kid. The nearest I got scared by a story was with the android/robot under the bed suddenly moving in The Girl in the Fireplace...as a 28 year-old man!

I remember it well. I'm sure it came top in the Doctor Who Monthly 'season survey' that year.

1. When Hieronymous takes his mask off to reveal the swirling helix in the Masque of Mandragora

2. When Leela ripped off Magnus Greel's mask to reveal his face in The Talons of Weng Chiang

To be honest, I'd probably have to add the 'Tom Baker opening credits' to the list too. That used to scare the crap out of me before the episode had even begun (the time tunnel credits, obviously).

The Un-Doctor (for anyone who used to catch Doctor Who on TV Ontario).

That and the fact that they used to re-run "The Invisible Enemy" a lot. Hey I thought the virus was kind of disturbing..."Contact has been made!" And then the Un-Doctor would come along and tell us why the Doctor was wrong about "this is the mind...and that's the brain over there."

(Tell me I'm not the only one who remembers the Un-Doctor, Judith Merril.)

The Empty Child. Everyone running around in the playground shouting 'are you my mummy?' made me stop watching until I was older.

Adric.

Oh, alright... I'll play properly.

Stuff that freaked me out as a boy -
The antimatter creature in Planet Of Evil.
Morbius without his head (not so much with the goldfish bowl though...).
Heironymous' mask, and then when the mask was ripped off at the end of part 3 to reveal a glowing white light.
The Master in the Deadly Assassin, and the spooky masked men in the Matrix.

Tom Baker's early years. I'm surprised we're not all mad.

Definitely the sea devils. My mum and dad used to take me and my older cousin to a caravan site in knot end. My cousin used to have me petrified with tales of seeing sea devils coming out of the sea there. Also I was scared of going down to the dell near where I lived as I had been told a Cyberman space ship had crashed there.

I seem to remember some slimy Maggot type creatures that grew into some very big slimy Maggot type creatures. It was a Tom Baker story - and my very first Doctor Who experience

Can't remember being scared, as such, although apparently I did the cliched hide behind the sofa, but I remember being thrill-scared when the Daleks burst out on Romana in Destiny. Amazing that I can remember exactly what I was seeing and feeling about something that happened when I was 6. Humans are ace!

I've a vivid memory of watching Doctor Who at my granddads house just after Tom Baker started and jumping out of my skin when his face appeared instead of Jon Pertwee's in the beginning credits!
