I have a Samsung ue40es7000 located at one end of my lounge in a centre position I view it straight on eleven foot away hubbie views to my right.

There is no noticeable drop in picture quality at hubbies position, so when I tried a ue55f8000 in place of the 40" I was very disappointed to find it unwatchable for hubbie.

Is this more of a problem with larger screens or is it just this model I wonder.

I think it's likely that the larger the panel the more obvious to the viewer (from the same viewing distance), the drop-off in contrast as you move away from viewing it straight on.

But certainly viewing angles vary in different LCD panels. Even though almost all will quote 178/178 viewing angles in the specs.
One reason why it's better to see the model you are interested in operation in a shop before you buy.

I've got a 4 year old 40" Samsung 5 series, and the contrast is great in any position on a three-seater settee, the centre of which is about 10' from the screen.
But sit in one of the chairs out to the sides, and the contrast is a bit muted (although still watchable)

The predecessor was a 26" Philips LCD, and it seemed to me that it had better viewing angles, with no discernible difference sitting in the side chairs. Although in every other aspect the Samsung has a much better picture.

Viewing angle is still one area where plasma beats LCD.

I see that Samsung 55" gets good reviews, even though it's got edge-lit LED as opposed to back-lit. Not sure if that would affect viewing angles though?

have you considered turning the tv slightly to the right?

Thats another slight niggle although I was fully aware the stand does not revolve and makes adjustment difficult.

The 40" has a stand that allows movement but I dont req. it on that one.
