I lost connection to the Internet the other day and after I did all the usual checks with the connections, micro filter and checking if my ISP had any reported outages, I diagnosed a faulty modem/router (Netgear N300).

As I had the N300 for a about 3 years I was wondering if this is the normal life expectancy of a modem/router?
I've now bought a Netgear N600 and I hope this one will last a bit longer.

So what the life expectancy of a modem/router? Would leaving it powered up at all times extend it's life? Up until now i'd been powering off after every online session as I though that would be more secure.

I've had the power supply fail on routers, so you might see if you can replace that.

3 years isn't too bad for a router that probably was fairly cheap.

Its better to leave stuff like that on all the time...the warming up and cooling down can affect the life of some components but at 3 years its not bad life span for something that cheap

Back to the power supply; turning it on and off would certainly shorten the lifespan.

Comments noted. I'll leave the new one powered on.
Thanks to you all for your responses.
