Backstreet Boys Reunion Album Flop
Just wondered why such a hyped pop reunion album of the biggest pop band of the 90's hasn't done well.
On paper the album looks impressive with high placings even two #1 in Switzerland/Holland. However in both those countries the album now holds the distinction of chart topper with fewest weeks on national charts (7 I believe and out). The same has happened in all other major/moderate charts what I like to call 'the McFly effect' high initial charting then a major freefall down the charts. With all the reunion publicity and exposure to national media (tv,magazines) based on this reunion fact even after all that the album has actually only done the same as the previous two 4 man line up albums sales wise. It seems with that backing there was a connection break with the public, any ideas? |

I think BSB will never have huge success agaih album/singlewise not only because of the reason I mentioned, but also because they are very old school boyband and look which boybands are popular these days - 1D and The Wanted. |

Yeah I agree with your point that was one of the first things I thought. As a Take That fan I really tried hard not to put a mention in.
The reason i'm asking is BSB were truly global and a major force it seems odd now that despite an initial high debut they fall away from the charts so quickly. For the record I don't believe TT in the UK with their new studio album will again go over 2 million plus (possibly 1.5 min to 1.8mill) an amazing achievement for the previous 4 records since reuniting. The greatest hits I would safely say would when the next volume arrives but I think perhaps they too have peaked and that's as a fan. I suppose it depends on the record but really would be amazing if they did. I think BSB are in a weird place that many pop artists get too when they reach that age, however I felt they replicated their sound and song formula for three studio albums in the beginning and that might have rooted them to a time and place which has now had an effect. |

I'm not a TT fan but I can't deny their success is amazing since the comeback. However, I do believe their last album was truly overrated and they sold out with completely changing the sound.
However, with BSB, I do think that maybe played it too safe this time, it was nothing new from them so maybe that harmed a little. But I still think they passed their time, maybe it is time to quit. Although, I respect them if they are still going because of the music, if that is the main reason, I won't judge when is the right time for anyone to stop. It will be sad to see them fading more and more though, that is why I'm glad Westlife have quit when they were still successful, despite the fact I wasn't happy when they made the decision. |

I saw them perform the album at a preview event a few months ago. It was obvious then that it wouldn't do very well on account of it being not very good.
A big part of the problem is that they're writing most of the songs themselves. |

got to remember there on an independent record label so no mainstream label that will force things down peoples throats.
I like BSB but there time came and went, I wish they could have just done the tours and leave it as that. Take That had Robbie as a current star in the UK so that helped a lot, its not like all of them had been gone for 10 years plus. |

I agree with point above but also they have done the right thing and seen the album through with another single and now multiple appearances again across Europe including a lot here in the UK.
The album isn't going to re peak or even go back into the top 100 by the looks of things but at least they are going for a few extra sales. |

How the mighty have fallen....they are only big enough these days to bag a performance slot on the Xtra Factor, and not the main show itself

Makson I did think that too although they did get a shoutout on the main show. Performing to an empty studio with just the crew clapping must have been really odd for a pop band who 14 years ago were the biggest draw at the Grammys.
I think the presenter saying he didn't know who they were as he was born in 1991 was embarrassing for them but they played it off well as he didn't know who Nick was either. However he would have been 8 to 10 in their prime and in Primary school where you learn about all the boybands whether you want to or not from girls so I think perhaps he was just trying to be 'too cool for school' Also with the record views on I'm a Celebrity I don't think the audience was big at all on Xtra Factor it never usually is though anyway. |

I dont think its flopped too bad considering they are on an idependent label. It charted well-ish in the US too. Plus dont forget they make most of their money from tours and they seem to do really well.

Thats because vocally BSB would destroy all x factor finalists.
As for the main question I feel the reason their comeback hasn't seen to have worked is because...well it's not really a comeback. By industry standards they've steadily been releasing music since their they came back with 'Incomplete' after their much talked about break after their Greatest Hits (which wasn't really all that long a break). It's not been long since their last studio album. Interest in them was declining as a lot of the girls grew out of them and the industry changed and their music seemed more dated as trends shifted. Most importantly since they never went away for long it's not like anyone was given the chance to miss them or play on nostalgia. It's not so bad for them being on an independent label as other have said. They'll still tour and I'm sure the album will be huge in Japan. |

![]() But they are the biggest selling boyband/group of all time if you dont include the beatles. 130million albums sold from 8 releases aint bad. |

Gary Barlow is wayyy better than anyone in BSB. From what I've heard the two leads sing in that whiny high nasally style that people think is nice but it's just irritating to me... Like this--> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-PEnowCOw8 *Cringes* |

The single was extremely poor I thought. The blandest thing they've ever done. A far cry from "Everybody" or "I Want It That Way".

I am not sure why the OP has highlighted the latest album? They haven't had a hit album since Black and Blue in 2000. Although as someone else stated, they are the biggest selling boyband ever. Their record sales between 1995 and 2000 we're just huge. I think they're great. I Want It That Way is probably one of the best pop songs of the last 20 years.
Although their records might not sell as well, they still make a fortune from touring etc. And the fact that they are still together after 20 years is testament to the fact they must still be friends. |

No uk boyband can hold a torch to backstreet. The 90's had
BSB N*sync Boys 2 men vocally and popularity wise, i think WESTLIFE equaled them... considering that they do not conquered USA, their over all sales almost equaled that of nsync
