What makes someone YOUR favourite?
It always interests me as to why people have their own favourites.
Like 2008 for example. Online Diana was always the favourite. Yet, Alexandra picked up the older vote, whereas Diana didn't. I favoured Diana because she was unique, and I didn't think Alex was. Why does someone become YOUR favouirte? The tone of their voice? Technical ability? Or personality? |

Tone > Technical Ability > Personality
However personality can make or break it if they are in the extremes. |

IN ORDER
Stage Presence (they need to know how to work a big stage in a way that won't make me cringe) Tone Genre (I'll be honest, I'll never warm to the likes of JLS so much-- even if they can be good-- because I'm no fan of their type of music) Technical Ability Personality (although this can be a red card if, say, they bring "undesirable" parts of it to their performances). |

I don't tend to think about it that methodically. To me, it's just about who stands out from the crowd, who peeks my interest, who I think has that thing that you can't put your finger on. A charisma, or stage presence, or likeability, a marketability. Obviously all of this has to be accompanied by the ability to hold a tune.

If they sing covers of songs I like; also if I like the sort of music they sing
Because I'm being selfish this year, if they're eye candy. |

Everything. To me it's about having "star quality" and the whole package.
It can range from a lot of factors. Like singing, tone, image, personality, stage presence etc. A bit of each usually come into it to help me choose my faves. |

Someone with creativity and an artistic edge - that usually corresponds to star quality (Aiden, Diana, Cher etc)
I like acts who don't simply stand there and sing the song but actually feel the emotion behind the lyrics |

I always try to see what strengths people have as they can all be different.
Some might be dead accurate, others not. Some might have a pleasant voice others not etc..... Last year Ella Henderson was the diamond in the rough. She had the lot and will go on to much better things. This year, my top pick from the start was Relley C. The room audition turned my head and I was intrigued. Very quickly, I was on the site picking up the video and listening again. I decided to just close my eyes and listen to the sound of her voice. In my opinion, hers was the best quality sound of all who came and went. I then opened my eyes and just watched her. Immediately she just disappeared into the music. The judges were no longer in the room and she was away, totally into the song she sang. Technically, not brilliant and her intonation was a little lacking but a stunning voice to listen to. So this year, my choice was based on different parameters than others in previous years. She was the one who stood out. |

My favorites are the acts which are passionate and quirky; I have not felt both qualities from anyone yet, Hannah has the passion but I don't think she's quirky enough and Abi's got the quirk but not the passion like Ruth, Misha, Katie W, James, Ella before her. Andrea had both which is what made her stand out - she would have been a true contender in the Overs - shame about her edit. |

I have to be able to connect to them in some way. I also don't like arrogance or over inflated talent. I want someone who is genuine, talented and good personality.
Minus points for sob stories and an auditioner being pushed forward by the show. |

I could not agree with you more. Ella was special last year. Misha B before her. Ruth before her. I posted a topic about how magical Relley's first audition was. That version of Don't You Worry Child combined with the accenated vocals was breathtaking. Her facial expressions and how much she got into also meant quite a lot. Shame she messed it up in the arenas otherwise she may have been able to get through JH. She was my fav girl otherwise.

It's whatever compels my attention - the things it takes to persuade me I'll be listening to a particular performer five or ten years hence and still finding the experience rewarding. Creative individuality, an appetite for risk, a voice that needn't be conventionally excellent but has at least to gratify rather than vex my ears, a willingness and ability emotionally to inhabit any song that bears inhabiting. That's come down to Cher Lloyd and Aiden Grimshaw in 2010, Frankie Cocozza and Janet Devlin in 2011, Lucy Spraggan last year, and I expect Hannah Barrett and/or Miss Dynamix this time. But, yes, I think I'm always listening with a view to the future rather than judging anyone on how competently or otherwise they can handle a wide variety of covers, an ability that's important for the show but doesn't matter a hill of beans outside it.

I think with Diana, she DID get the votes at first. Everybody loved Diana in the beginning but I think it was simply thef act that she got worse when Alex got better. After laryngitis gate Diana never got her voice back properly, or if she did she didn't know what to do with it afterwards. Yellow will go down as one of the most heartbreaking performances for me, simply for the sheer look of what the **** did i do from Diana at the end.

I wouldn't say she messed it up in the following auditions. I personally feel that people were expecting songs akin to the one she sang in the room audition. When she didn't, it was like, whoa, hang on a sec, what you playin' at ? If you go back and listen to the other auditions she did, they were actually pretty good. People were just expecting another song like "Don't you worry child".
Her other performances were great though. She was great but I think it's because it sounded odd at arenas that the producers stopped pushing for her and decided to go with others instead.

Versatility in key for me - someone who can sing and hold notes on different tempos of the song. Someone who can stand there and power out ballads that captivates you and the same person who dance and sing an uptempo number

For me, it's all about talent although I have been accused of treating the show like a beauty pageant

I like someone with talent and a spark/connection which I can't describe. I first saw it with Leona at Judges Houses and supported her all the way to the end, her run on the show was incredible.
I didn't see it again until season 5 with Alexandra. I think she was just a special contestant and it was her ability/versatility that turned her into my favourite. There was nothing she couldn't do. Whereas one trick ponies like Diana, Laura and later Janet all failed because they just weren't as talented and couldn't adapt. The most successful acts in music know how to adapt, look at Madonna, Mariah, Beyoncé, MJ etc. They were all capable of multiple styles and could perform. That's why acts like Diana, Laura etc could never win against Alex. Alex is the only act I've seen that kind of potential in. Leona has the best vocals the show has ever seen and Alex has the best performance potential, which is why they are both my faves. |

Personality. Someone who is down to earth, but has a spark, charm and a bit of fire about them. They need to have a decent enough voice, but they don't have to be the most amazing singer.
For me, there's only been one act ever on The X Factor who has ticked all those boxes for me. The wonderful Ruth Lorenzo. She has the personality, as well as the most amazing voice. |

None of the UK acts have done any of the above for me as yet! Quite a few on the USA version have
