I said it on the other thread and I'll repeat it here: don't watch this before The Enemy of the World unless you want to know the ending of that. You have been warned!
Otherwise I'm enjoying the first episode so far. Very atmospheric, and I can see why TfL thought a real London tube station might have been used — the sets are very good. |

London Transport - Transport for London wasn't formed until the 21st Century!
EDIT: is it my imagination or does Troughton seem to get a lot more trouble from foam than the other Doctors? I ask as someone that rewatched The Seeds of Doom a few weeks ago... |

Well, that was great! The ending all happened very suddenly, but not on the Moffatt/Smith scale. I invested sufficiently actually to wonder whether the [not-yet] Brigadier was the mole, albeit that I was sure it would all be part of a plan if he were. It was refreshing to see some new Who from before there was any thought of trying to entertain people like us — no gratuitous continuity, no mythology, no winking at the audience whatsoever.
I'm saving Enemy of the World for the weekend. I hope it's good too. |

I just watched Web of Fear in one sitting. You know it's interesting, because there is always a fear it can never live up to the hype; and I am one of those who thinks Tomb of the Cybermen is over rated.
Not the case here. It was marvelous- atmospheric in spades, tense, wonderfully nostalgic. The only slight disappointment is I hope they can animate part 3, as the reconstruction is hurt by the lack of dialogue in some scenes. Still there was nothing they could do about that. Anyone on the fence about buying the download, do it. Easily the best tenner I've spent all year. And I've still got Enemy to go. |

So happy that this has been found, it was one of my childhood favourites!
The expression "Hiding behind the sofa" has been over-used over the years, but this one really did have me watching from behind the sofa. Colour me happy

Understand one episode of 'Web Of Fear' is still missing - Episode 3(?).
Did it detract from the viewing experience - did they give a summary to link between the adjacent episodes?! A fantastic find, given the Great Intelligence story arc of the last series and Xmas 2012 story, and the subtle references to the Web Of Fear (eg. The biscuit tin with the Underground map). Would love it if they found the 'Next Week' trailer for this story transmitted after the final epsode of 'Enemy Of The World' and shown at various peak times during the preceding week - where The Second Doctor does a piece to camera in a small tunnel set introducing the next story. Now for the Holy Grail - the last episode of The Tenth Planet. But finding that might have been slightly embarrassing with the imminent release of the story on Monday (!4th October) with the animated reconstruction. |

... by which time they'd hopefully realised that if something on TV looks like a tube station but the camera appears to be mounted halfway behind the wall and the actors are casually walking around the electric rail then it's probably a set.

I watched the reconstruction of this a couple of weeks ago. The story was fine, but I didn't seem to enjoy it as much as the Abominable Snowmen.
However, the reconstruction I watched was really very poor so I look forward to properly watching this story in full eventually. Glad they recovered most of the episodes. Does it look as if they'll animate Episode 3 eventually? Or will they stop making Classic Doctor Who DVDs by next year? |

I assume the BBC must have bought a foam machine and were determined to make use of it!

I was seven when I first saw this story, I remember being scared witless as the Yeti came down a tunnel towards soldiers laying on & hiding behind crates shooting at the Yeti who remorselessly came on & killed all of them, Will be interested to see it again, 45 years later I doubt I will have to hide behind the sofa

To film in the real tunnels, you would have had to drag big, bulky cameras and lights down there, arrange for the track power to be off (but not the power for your lights) and no trains running and no passengers or staff in shot, and then get all the kit out again. There were no disused tunnels to play about in back then, either. |

I finished watching this tonight, after spreading it over a few days. Despite my best intentions, I just had to watch Web before EotW.
There's just so much to like in this release. I'm no apologist for the poor stories from the early era, when Doctor Who was bad, it was dull, plodding and cheap. But when it's good, it's both a wonderful little story and a great piece of nostalgia. For me, the best stories from the 60's have also aged so much better than the Pertwee era. WoF looks wonderful, dark gloomy atmospheric sets with appropriate lighting. The arrival of colour may have been a technical revolution, but the skilled set builders and lighting crews must have hated it. Before watching this, I first watched the single available episode of The Abominable Snowmen from the Lost in Time DVD. The change in appearance of the Yeti is quite a surprise, in the first story they really come across as big furry teletubbies, bouncing about the mountainside. They're as scary as the adipose. Roll on to WoF, and the combination of the costume upgrade (especially the eyes), the roaring sound fx and the dark lighting makes for one of the most effective monsters of the 60's. It's really not a surprise that this story is so well remembered by those who saw it as a child. The only sad thing for me, is that the Brigadier's first appearance takes place in episode 3, which is still missing and reconstructed from telesnaps. It is surprising how much better this story handles the military then the UNiT stories that followed in the next decade. The battle sequences are much better thought out, and there's none of the budget nonsense of extras pretending to fire guns because they couldn't even afford blanks. They're even quite generous with the hand grenades. Final though, Pat really was brilliant. The combination of Pat and Frazer is undoubtably one of the best the show has ever had. |
