Back on topic, someone said Sophie looked really good in training according to Brendan on twitter. Hopefully, he can spend some time getting her to inject some personality, rather than just perfecting the dance. I think that's all I want from Sophie at this point.

If 'too cool for school' means she doesn't go in for the plasticly perky gurning usually touted as 'personality', I hope she doesn't change. Exaggerated facial expression is probably necessary for the pros who dance in large venues or do regular stage work - it's ridiculous for HD TV work.

Not what I see. She looks like she is concentrating too hard to smile, so ends up looking "too cool for school".

I do not want to see Ian levels of gurn, but a smile now and then would be nice.

Strange when Louis Smith and Harry Judd was too cool for school in their dancing, nobody seems to complain much?

Actually, I lied. I complained A LOT. I didn't mind Louis' Salsa/Mambo (that dance he's supposed to look a little haughty anyway) but he was so DULL in other dances, and then I had the taste of my own bitter complaining medicine when he did that Charleston.

Harry Judd was also quite expressionless. Again, too cool for school maybe alright when he pretended to be Danny in the Grease-inspired jiveless jive, but even when he was doing Charleston all he could do was or :yawn: (like catching flies with his mouth).

But it's strange thus far I still don't find Sophie too bad in terms of her 'too cool for school' stylie. I am partial because I am male and my hormones were dictating my opinions you say? Seriously? Me? How very dare you!

I think that was the one I thought of as the "goldfish" dance.

I think in this case Mimi people are thinking that because Sophie has a quiet and elegant persona that they are think she somehow is boring and maybe feel that she is snobbish and feels herself above the show.

Now since Sophie on every video and interview appears to be the same , perhaps this is just her persona, she certainly doesn't appear loud , but she does seem very warm and she also appears to enjoy the show and tries very hard to learn to dance.

I think to win more people over she needs maybe to show that she is enjoying it more, but I like that we have someone with a different type of personality than the traditional celeb who just goes on and on about how much fun they are having.

I don't know why Sophie should be different for me than Harry who I felt was a glorified Geography teacher and he was quiet and aloof , I just feel there is more to Sophie, not least because I have heard her dirty laugh

I find myself coming over all hypocritical this year I complained loudly about Louis' lack of visible emotion in almost every dance but don't really seem to mind so much with Sophie. Perhaps it's because her face is much prettier than his whether it's smiling or not.

Then again, while she's also a very low key (but nevertheless pleasant) personality, I don't think she's quite as expressionless as Louis on the dance floor. Louis' face was downright inscrutable but I think Sophie is making some effort to express the character of each dance, even during her Samba. I think at the moment her issue is just that she's nervous and concentrating so much on just getting the dance right that selling the dance/playing the character kind of falls by the wayside a bit. I do hope it's something she can get better at though as her confidence and dance experience grows because I do believe she is enjoying Strictly and it would be nice if she loosened up enough to show it.

You are joking aren't you? Louis got ripped apart on here for being expressionless from the minute he got paired up with Flavia. I seem to remember long in-depth analysis about how he didn't look enthusiastic to be paired with her etc, etc. It only got worse as the dances went on.
What I find amazing is quite a few of the people who went on about his lack of expression last year, are the very same people praising Sophie's 'cool and understated' Samba.

I think there's a difference though between someone's face looking vacant/expressionless and someone being "too cool for school." Harry and Louis often fell into the former category (in my opinion). And I think part of the reason for that was they didn't properly FEEL the music or the dance they were performing. Unsurprising since Louis came from the clinical world of gymnastics. They both got better with time though, Harry more so.

In Sophie's case I think she totally feels the music, I can see it in her eyes and the way she moves her body. But she expresses herself in her own cool, somewhat casual style which might be interpreted by some as her considering herself too good for it all. I don't believe she really believes that at all. But I can understand how it might come across that way.

Sophie needs to achieve a balance - try and embrace the character of each dance more whilst still retaining some of her own unique style to make each dance her own. There was too much Sophie and not enough exuberance and flirtiness in her Samba (though I enjoyed it myself).

If you read the next pargraph, you'll see I was joking indeed.

I have to say I would rather she 'let go' a bit more in her Samba, but I really didn't think she did any thing wrong with her Charleston. It was in fact quite clever of Brendan to choreograph according to her character, like Flavia did with Louis in his Salsamambo. Then Flavia managed to hide his dullness again with the thick zombie make up tango but you couldn't cover up for ALL the dances and eventually people were going to notice.

It's still early days for Sophie. Much as I loved her dancing now (Samba not as much as Charleston), if she continue with this one-dimensional characterisation through the weeks, I would become one of the vocal critics of her, you can mark my words.

Well maybe one of them would be me Louis was not one of my favourites I did not find him interesting , I do find Sophie , horses for courses Ellie , it is all awfully personal .

Non of his dances ever really did it for me even that amazing final show dance , I did not dislike him at all. I just was not interested in him .

I can't remember his Samba at all and I can't remember whether I said he was not showing enough personality I might have done but quite frankly if it were the later half of the show I had stopped posting about him because he did not interest me.
