They both got better with time though, Harry more so.

In Sophie's case I think she totally feels the music, I can see it in her eyes and the way she moves her body. But she expresses herself in her own cool, somewhat casual style which might be interpreted by some as her considering herself too good for it all. I don't believe she really believes that at all. But I can understand how it might come across that way.

Sophie needs to achieve a balance - try and embrace the character of each dance more whilst still retaining some of her own unique style to make each dance her own. There was too much Sophie and not enough exuberance and flirtiness in her Samba (though I enjoyed it myself).”

Excellent post, Sid. I do agree with you that Sophie's issue is an inability to fully express her emotions, not a lack of feeling. She seemed a little crest fallen at the judges' comments that her Samba lacked a party vibe and was keen to correct Tess that it was only calm and sophisticated "on the outside".

Neither of which terms apply to Sophie , laid back is fine but Sophie definatley does care and she is not indifferent .

It is now bugging me that 2 words which were originally used incorrectly ie not according to the dictionary definition have been taken up to incorrectly describe Sophie's style of dancing thereby compounding the original error.

And now having bored myself my stint at dictionary corner is over , unless of course someone else makes the same error all over again .”

I'm not sure I would describe Sophie as "laid back". She doesn't come across as a very easy going sort of person in her VTs and training videos. She strikes me as the sort of person who's always analysing things, always thinking... maybe over thinking. Which again isn't the kind of personality trait that's very conducive to living in the moment, letting go and just enjoying a performance.

You should see the family album

I've tried to be louche about the forum but that effort defeated the purpose... (Why does it get under the skin in this way??)

Coppertop! I'm sorry to speak hastily. My view of Sophie is that there's a veneer of cool over something less easy below that. Maybe you're more focused on the underneath part and I'm more aware of the insouciant () layer. Either way, learning how to make that personality work in all the dances is really the interesting thing in watching Sophie and Brendan.

I'm begining to regret disliking the term "too cool for school", when I see what people are deciding to use instead

That's what you get for being too cool for school.

Be that as it may, Harry actually had more expression that Sophie did! Just watched her Charleston back now and her face is blank (her dancing, however, is stunning). I think her performance will improve with time.

That's a pretty assuming statement to make and I think a little condescending too. We can't actually know how they felt because people show feeling in different ways and personally I disagree - if Harry hadn't felt the music he wouldn't have got such good sway in his ballroom dances. Watch his American Smooth or Viennese Waltz back, he looks pretty moved. I also thought Louis performed felt his showdance

A nice range of cool words. You have to squint your eyes and stare across them... Right there in the middle, there is the coolly cool we're after.

To be clear and to avoid talking about a blummin' word [tears out tufts of hair], I was not meaning to criticise Sophie or to imply she doesn't care. (Going for a lie down now.)

(I don't think you have to worry about my word-selection, or police my posts for misuse of language. I have a PhD in English literature and at least some of the words there were the right ones. The better ones weren't. Misuse of language is poetry )”

I love you (in a forumite, buddy sort of way), Pet, you know that right?

For me, Harry epitomised (whether intended by him or not) 'too cool for school'. At least Louis, the other cool for school kid, tried to do a comedy charleston, for me rather cringe-worthy, but at least he tried to act his dance. Harry just had that one expression...

It's still early days for Sophie. As I was giving Harry and Louis a chance until the middle of the competition, then I started to moan they had the same blank/nonchalant expression in most of their dances, I might do the same with Sophie if she continues this 'cool' schtick in the coming weeks...

If I spuriously claim that Ben really reminds me of Darren Gough do I get to whine about him winning again? It's been a while.

Ben seems to love himself much less than Darren. So you can't whine.

Sophie certainly looks very nervous whilst awaiting the results but notably she was the only celeb not to give her partner a spontaneous hug when it was announced they were through.”

Hey sexy

I get the impression Sophie's not a very touchy-feely person or one to get over-excited about things. I remember thinking how subdued her reaction was backstage after getting four 9s for the Charleston. Usually couples charge through the doors hugging and screaming after a great performance. But there was none of that. I just don't think it's in Sophie's nature to do that sort of thing. And that's ok.

Chemistry's vital but I don't believe it's as simple as whether couples hug, how far apart they sit on the sofa etc It's more nuanced than that. Tonight Karen Hardy made the point that Sophie understands Brendan's vision for a performance. That tells me they are in tune with each other and compliment each other very well. I'm quite excited by where this partnership will go

Yes I picked up on that too. I think it might be a bit of a cover both for nerves and for feelings lurking beneath the surface which Brendan will need to coax out more.
