How far would you travel for a decent takeaway?
Had this discussion with a friend recently.
They couldn't believe I was suggesting ordering from a Chinese that was 14 miles away instead of any of the locals. This would mean basically driving from the centre of Milton Keynes to Towcester where the Chinese is. As far as I'm concerned though, if the foods better I'd rather travel a bit further. How far would you go? |

I wouldn't, I always get mine delivered. I am happy to travel a long way to go to a decent restaurant though.

So are you saying that you'd only use places that delivered, even if there was a collection only place that did better food? |

I would travel for an hour I think. But I would want to eat in if the option was available, after traveling for that amount of time!

![]() Despite the distance i can order from the Chinese, drive there, pickup and be back with the food still piping hot in 30-40 mins. There is a Chinese within 2 mins drive but the food leaves a lot to be desired. It's more like a Chinese that also sells fish and chips, except the fish and chips side of it gets used more! |

For me a takeaway has to be convenient. That's what it's all about, so a few miles maximum.

There's nothing nearer than about 8 or 10 miles to us, so it's academic really. Just as easy to drive to a good one as to a crap one.

Surely if you could eat in then it would be a restaurant and not just a takeaway?

I would actually do what you do and go all out to get food if I felt it was worth it. |

We travel about 10 miles to a Chinese takeaway instead of one that is only 2 miles away because we prefer the food there even though the local one isn't that bad. Though I don't think we would travel any further.

It would depend on the time factor. As said, takeaways are for convenience and if it's going to take over 45 for delivery then it's not very convenient in my book. Unless there is a good deal on for collection only then I don't see the point in collecting it. Usually when I have takeaway i'd be having a few pints anyway.
Ofcourse if you are an egotistical celeb then you order from a little curry house in Wales to deliver to New York via British Airways |

The particular takeaway in question doesn't deliver although you can order over the phone and pick up.

When I lived in a sleepy village I used to drive 3-4 miles to town and back to pick up a decent kebab & chips from the van, but that's probably the limit.
I'm a real takewaway lover but I can't imagine a takeaway ever being worth driving an extra 10-12 miles for. |

If it was an usual cuisine that I can't get in my local town then I'd travel a fair way! The Chinese/Indian restaurants are awful.
