Based on the Radio 4 program of the same name, list the 8 tracks you would take to your desert island, along with a book, and one luxury. (no internet / canoes / speedboats / other means of escape)

Here's mine:

1. Elbow - One Day Like This
2. The Smiths - How Soon Is Now
3. Dire Straits - Going Home (Theme From Local Hero)
4. Radiohead - Creep
5. Faithless - Insomnia
6. Tears For Fears - Pale Shelter
7. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
8. Foo Fighters - The Pretender

Book - The Stand by Stephen King

Luxury - A good comfortable bed

I think any music anyone chooses would drive them bonkers if that's all they had to listen to, what you love now, you'd hate.

Book: the don flows home to the sea. - it's a big book and would take a while to get through.

Luxury: I'd go with comfy bed too.

I've often wondered about this, and it's so difficult.

It changes every day.

1) Scritti Politti: Faithless
2) Talking Heads: Heaven
3) Rizzle Kicks: Down With The Trumpets
4) Unknown Mortal Orchestra: Swim And Sleep Like A Shark
5) New Order: Your Silent Face
6) Smiths: Reel Around The Fountain
7) Talking Heads: Take Me To The River
8) Everything Everything: Schoolin

Book: "England's Dreaming" Jon Savage

Luxury: My car. It would be far better to sleep in than anything on the island. Only problem would be the seats are electric

I'd be tempted to choose music pieces that I didn't know

also very long ones

like wagner operas or symphonies by Shostokovich

you've got a lot of time to kill...............

At least a couple of songs from this list er not meatloaf!

I'd also choose some classical music I think instrumentals would be less likely to send you mad.

Book volume 12 of encylopaedia Britannica (though any volume will do... apart from the index)

Luxury an extra big pillow

i'd be happy doing my 8 discs in the studio with Kirsty, but listening to them on my own on an island would probably make me feel suicidal

I think it is rather quaint in this day and age that a copy of the bible and the complete works of Shakespeare are still included in the things that you get to take with you.

I can, to a certain extent understand why some would want some Shakespeare - although some of it is hard going and pretty tedious. The bible on the other hand is, depending on your point of view, and your faith - if you have such a thing - the best thing to have, or as another poster suggests very useful as toilet paper.

Myself, I'd want an mp3 player, fully loaded with the last 60 years of the pop charts, a good amount of popular classical music, and a never ending supply of Radio 4 podcasts.

Oh yeah, and a nice pair of Sennheiser headphones as well.

Life on Mars - David Bowie
The Lark Ascending - Ralph Vaughan Williams
Achilles Heel - Toploader
Time - Pink Floyd
Dance of the flowers - Tchaikovsky
Domino - Genesis
Elenor Rigby - The Beatles
Clair De Lune - Debussy

Chuck out the complete works of Shakespeare and have complete works of Dickens instead.
No bible.

Luxury item, never ending wine.

Anyway my 8 choices (currently, it seems to change rather regularly):

1. Elbow - Lippy Kids
2. Blur - Under The Westway
3. Keane - Sovereign Light Cafe
4. Karine Polwart - Follow The Heron
5. t.A.T.u - Gomenasai
6. Ralph McTell - Streets Of London
7. Roy Harper - When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease
8. Amsterdam - Does This Train Stop On Merseyside

Book - Complete C# reference material, as one volume

Luxury - A solar powered laptop (I don't think the rules allow a satellite phone to use as an internet connection though).

Well, it wouldn't be DS without the usual tedious anti-religion dig, would it? However, the joke's on you because you get the Bible and the complete works of Shakespeare anyway. Yeah, that's right - you wound up with two Bibles. Hah! Not so clever now, are you?

I love you for this thread. I have toyed with it all week after this weeks episode which I have listened to and then caught repeats of.

I will answer tomorrow in sobriety.
