Orange withdraw Sony Z1010
What a bummer! I ordered this phone on Jan 31st. I got a great deal, too.
Sony Z1010 £49.99 with 200 mins X network for £30 p.mth 200 mins free eve calls 1000 free eve txts 60 minutes free video calling p.mth and 50MB free data p.mth for 12 months £50 airtime credit Just told me today they have withdrawn the phone "due to too many problems". I have a choice of 4 phones on 3G and none of them are anything like as good as the Sony for features and screen size. I haven't cancelled the order yet, as I am obvioulsy reluctant to. Now I don't know what to do! Help!!

Good deal but go for the Nokia 6630 instead....far better phone than the Sony Ericsson Z1010 - even if you do have to pay a little more.
Or if they wont give you a Z1010, then demand the 6630 for free for messing you around!! |

Thanks, but I wouldn't have a Nokia if they gave me £50. Over-rated tatt, IMO.

The 6630 isn't better... it doesn't offer Video Calling which I would persume is majorly what 3G is all about? |

It does according to the Orange website. I still wouldn't have it if it made me breakfast in bed!
That's very misleading! You have to buy one of these to get video calling available on the 6630:http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,58860,00.html |

*Does the 'Told-You-So' dance*
Several months ago, I posted here(#25) that after a year worth of delays and promises it was 'coming soon' 3 had decided to drop the Z1010 launch due to problems with reliability. I also said of how it probably wouldn't see a UK Vodafone release.
The more militant anti-3 members of DS had a go at me (post #26) and I stated about Orange having issues with it even at that early pre-launch stage (post #32). I'm not having a dig at Orange, quite the opposite in fact for removing a weak link. This phone was well over a year old at the Orange 3G launch. The 6630 is a MUCH better choice. Now, if you excuse me; *dances off to bed* Last edited by Mr Cable : 03-02-2005 at 23:36. |

Seriously, get the 6630 in. Battery life is FAR better, the software is more stable - and it's Symbian so you can install stuff. It's still got Bluetooth, and the RSMMC are usually cheaper than Memory Stick Duo. It's a good bit smaller too.
Have you had experience with a SYMBIAN handset? It's far better than Nokia's own stuff. I know what you mean about Nokia being over-rated and I'm no Nokia nut! My last 6 phones have been Moto, Nokia, Moto, Sharp, Sharp, Alcatel! Try it - you have got 14 days to change it! Good Luck! |

My (biased) perception is that saying get a Nokia is like saying get a Skoda, when I'm used to BMWs! A hard change to make. The other thing is, I wanted a phone where the screen was protected. Screens get scratched in girls' handbags, you know. Why don't the male designers think of these things more? (And don't get me started on trying to text with long nails!! )Thanks for advice!

Believe me - the Z1010 is nothin compared to the 6630, which wins hands down in most areas. The camera is sooo much better, as mentioned before its more stable and is currently the best 3G phone that Orange offer.
However, if you dont want to stay on Orange then go for the Sharp 902sh on Vodafone or the SE S700i if you want to stay with SE. But please dont go with Z1010 - you'll regret it. And Lee, 3G isn't just about video calling - its about the whole new interface - i.e. video/audio streaming, faster GPRS connections etc. In my opinion I dont think 3G is worth the extra cash at the moment, give 6-8 months and it will be, but I wouldnt invest in it now. The majority of the phones are out of date (the Z1010 was launched in late 2003) or too bulky. Most phones currently offer the same as 3G enhanced phones but without 3G capabilities. I would choose Samsung's D500 over any 3G phone apart from the Nokia 6630 or Sharp 902sh. Thats my 2 cents anyway. Up to you shelly - i think you'd be wrong to turn down a 6630 if you were offered it. |

Nokia has the best after sales of any Manufacturer with Service Centres all over the UK being able to offer same day repairs in many cases.
Nokia has the most intuitive software of any Manufacturer. I'll admit the build quality of Ericsson phones was better than Nokia, but since they merged with Sony and became SonyEricsson its gone downhill fast.

Nokia's design and time taken in the production of phones leaves much to be desired. They really couldn't care less on what they put their badge on which is why they've recently got such a poor reputation in comparison to other companies.

To be fair to Sony Ericsson, although I've had nothing but trouble with my Z1010 in the UK, when I went abroad for a week, it worked flawlessly on the local 2G and 3G network (although I couldn't send text messages out of the country because of an intermittent issue the Orange techs had apparently been working on for 2 months already
).

I've had a Z1010 since launch on Orange 3G. The first handset was a dud but the replacement is fine, no problems whatsoever with it. A friend with a 6630 had problems with the Nokia freezing, rebooting and dropping calls and got it exchanged for a Z1010 which has been flawless.

I have the LG 8110 on three.
Can't say its the best 3G phone ever, but the design is right and it works well. There are newer LG 3G phones on the market at the moment, worth looking at if you can do without bluetooth. Plus they are easily hacked for all networks. Ahem. |
